Description: After literally months of saying to myself "aww, I wish so much I could go to that gig!" but knowing full well that tickets were long gone on a free but first come first serve basis I had (More) After literally months of saying to myself "aww, I wish so much I could go to that gig!" but knowing full well that tickets were long gone on a free but first come first serve basis I had given up all hope. On Friday 7th September 2007 my girlfriend and I heading down to Trafalgar Square to check out "The Pod" and huge enclosed pod like space run by Becks and the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts). Inside was a large single room, completely blacked out where one could just sit on the floor. All around the walls was a 360° projection provided by 12 high quality projectors arranged in a cluster hanging from the centre. It was damn cool. Projected onto the walls were short art films and digital art productions of all sorts. Most of the digitaly created content was programed to "travel" between the projectors which seemlessly overlapped. It was very very cool indeed. Anyway, as we were leaving we noticed a little stand in the corner with forms to fill in name and hone number to win pairs of only 40 tickets left for the Chemical Brothers' gig that following Sunday. We hastily filled one in each - how often does one get luck with these kind of promotions. BANG! The next morning we were woken by girlfriend's phone ringing - someone from the ICA telling here she had won two tickets!!! So, along we went. It was one of the best large size gigs I have ever been to. The music was incredible, the sound was great, the atmosphere was so good - standing next to the pumping fountains on Trafalgar Square... but most of all it was a visual spectacular. For me this gig was particularly special as it was the Chemical Brothers who first got me interested in composing/producing electonic music (back when I was about 11) and it was the United Visual Artists (main VJs for the night) who first got me into created digital arts of various sorts after I saw them VJ for Chemical Brothers on TV when they headlined Glastonbury in 1999 I think it was. To see these two inspirations of mine perform together in such a great enviroment was a blessing and to share that experience with my girlfriend who share these interests was all the more better!! Thanks for winning ;-) ! My god I have typed a lot and it sounds like a fucking poem in places!! :-S ............... Anyways, even better - they even used some of the same visuals from the Glastonbury set (which I later "borrowed" to assist creation of my first video work! To add to all this, Calvin Harris opened the night with aain awesome visuals (not sure if they were UVA or Flat Nose George). The majority of these videos were stereoscopic 3D with glasses provided on the door and on such a huge screen they were very effective indeed. I thought that was the main screen, but when Chemical Brothers came on the screen they used was about 4 times the size, and was made of a fine mesh with LED pixels allowing an enormous lighting righ behind the screen to be used yet keeping an unbeleivably high resolution and exremely bright image at the foreground. The visuals throughout the night were so inspiring, so creative, so original, such high quality and were, for me the highlight of the evening. Unfortunately I forgot to charge my camera before leaving, hence the shortness of the above video clips and large presence of shitty phone cam videos. On the geeky side, the gig was also cool, got to see some very cool camera dollys, and huge camera cranes/jibs in action up close, got to see the amazing LED mesh screen in action (which I later saw demo'd at the PLASA show in Earls Court - only to be awestruck by the cost of a square metre!). Got to see loads of very powerful moving head lights, two awesome lasers, search lights, shit loads of LED pixel-line strip lights and enough smoke machines to fill almost the whole of Trafalgar Square! ALso got to have a close-up look at the Chemical Brothers obscene rig comprising of about 15 amazing synths, 10 midi-controller keyboards, a huge mixer and much more all in a curvy, metal cutom built rack/performance unit! Chemical Brothers played all the classic tunes, quite a few from Push The Button and loads I didn't recgnise, but loved which must have been from their new album. I have run out of things to say.
