He learned to play guitar and snagged a disc jockey job at a Littlefield station while still a boy. In 1958 he moved to Lubbock, where he worked as a DJ and met rising star Buddy Holly, with whom he toured and played electric bass during 1958 and 1959. It was Jennings who gave up his seat to the Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson) on the doomed 1959 plane flight that took the lives of Holly, Richardson, and singer Ritchie Valens. The disaster stunned Jennings and it took him several years to regain his momentum. But his time with Holly had been pivotal: "Mainly what I learned from Buddy," Jennings recalled, "was an attitude. He loved music, and he taught me that it shouldn't have any barriers to it." After working West Texas radio again, Jennings began performing at a bar called J. D.'s in Phoenix, Ariz. There he began to craft a sound that combined his aggressive Telecaster electric guitar style, his rough-edged vocals, and an eclectic repertoire that often borrowed from rockabilly, rock and folk. And it was there that Nashville-based Bobby Bare, then a country hitmaker for RCA Records, heard Jennings and immediately called RCA producer Chet Atkins. Although Jennings had already recorded some country-folk sides for A&M Records in Los Angeles, A&M agreed to let Atkins sign him, and his first RCA session took place in March 1965. Over the next five years, Jennings won mainstream country stardom with hits like "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line," "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" and "The Taker." Though it wasn't typical of his work, his rendition of "MacArthur Park" (recorded with the Kimberlys), won a 1969 Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group. Despite his achievements, the high-spirited Jennings chafed under Nashville's typical production process, in which salaried staff producers chose song material and session musicians and recorded artists in company studios. Gradually he won the right to choose his own songs, producers, and sidemen (often his road band), in the process turning out albums like 1973's Lonesome, On'ry and Mean and Honky Tonk Heroes, which showcased the hard-hitting, stripped-down music he much preferred to pop-tinged Nashville Sound productions. Hit singles such as "I'm a Ramblin' Man" and "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" also exemplified his hard-charging, rock-influenced style. In 1975 he won CMA's male vocalist of the year award. By this time Jennings was extending his audience to embrace hordes of college-age fans, who flocked to see him at venues including Willie Nelson's free-wheeling outdoor music festivals at Dripping Springs, Texas. In 1976, both artists soared to even more dizzying heights with the RCA release Wanted! The Outlaws. Featuring Jennings, Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jennings's wife, Jessi Colter, it became the first country album to be certified platinum. By the turn of the 21st century, 13 additional Jennings albums (including duet projects) had sold half a million copies or more. As the '70s progressed, Jennings and Nelson recorded duet albums and crossover hits like "Luckenbach, Texas" and "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," which won a 1978 Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. Jennings himself rode high on the charts into the late 1980s, chalking up No. 1 singles including "I've Always Been Crazy," "Amanda," "I Ain't Living Long Like This" and "Lucille (You Won't Do Your Daddy's Will)." During many of these same years, the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard --- for which Jennings wrote and sang the theme song and served as offscreen narrator --- further popularized his sound and the trademark image of his leather-covered guitar. While Jennings was selling albums in numbers previously associated with rock stars, his excessive lifestyle also resembled those of many rock icons. Substance abuse eroded his career for a time, but he eventually beat this problem and stabilized his personal life. (Less)

Het werd naderhand ook door veel artiesten gecoverd en word door velen beschouwd als een gospel klassieker. Nelson verhuisde naar Nashville (Tennessee) in een poging een platencontract te krijgen. Dat lukte aanvankelijk echter niet. Hij tekende wel een contract met Pamper Music die zijn liedjes wel zagen zitten, maar zijn performance niet. Zo schreef hij onder andere het nummer Night Life voor zanger Ray Price, een nummer dat als meest-gecoverde countrysong ooit te boek staat. Nelson ging mee op tournee met Price, als bassist van de toerband. Gedurende deze periode werden veel van Nelson's nummers hits voor andere artiesten. Zo zong Billy Walker het nummer "Funny How Time Slips Away", Faron Young zong "Hello Walls", Roy Orbison zong "Pretty Paper", en (wellicht de bekendste van allemaal) Patsy Cline zong "Crazy". Uiteindelijk sloot Nelson in 1961 een platendeal met Liberty Records en bracht hij vanaf datzelfde jaar diverse singles uit, waaronder "Willingly" en "Touch Me" (beiden met zijn vrouw Shirley Collie). Hij wist deze lijn echter niet voort te zetten en zijn carrière kwam tot stilstand. Zijn privéleven was destijds ook nogal kleurrijk: hij was alcoholist, verloor baan na baan en werd verschillende keren betrapt op verboden wapenbezit. In 1965 kwam Nelson onder contract bij RCA Records, en scoorde hij een paar kleine hits. Hij raakte echter gefrustreerd door de platenindustrie die hem in een keurslijf probeerde te dwingen, verbrak zijn contract, keerde de muziekwereld de rug toe en verhuisde naar Austin, Texas. Daar aangekomen besloot Nelson, geïnspireerd door de muziekscene aldaar, weer muziek te gaan maken. Zijn populariteit in Austin groeide razendsnel, en Nelson kon zijn eigen muziek maken, beïnvloed door rock and roll, jazz, swing en folk. Ook Nelson's levenslange passie voor hardlopen begon in deze periode in Austin. In Austin tekende Nelson een contract met Atlantic Records. Hij bracht in 1973 een single uit ("Shotgun Willie") die uitstekende kritieken kreeg maar slechts matig verkocht. Het album "Phases and Stages" uit 1974 (geïnspireerd door zijn echtscheiding) bevatte de single "Bloody Mary Morning". Na dit album verhuisde Nelson weer van platenlabel en ging naar Columbia Records. Hier kreeg hij complete creatieve vrijheid over zijn werk. Het resultaat was het immens populaire album Red Headed Stranger (1975). Hoewel Columbia Records het in eerste instantie niet zag zitten om een album uit te brengen met slechts piano en gitaar, zette Nelson (ondersteund door Waylon Jennings) door, en het album werd een enorme hit, deels vanwege de populaire coverversie van het nummer "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain". Tegelijk met Nelson behaalde ook Waylon Jennings grote successen aan het begin van de jaren zeventig. Ondanks hun enorme succes (platina albums, wereldtoernees) taande Nelson's populariteit en moest hij het al snel hebben van liefdadigheidswerk zoals het op poten zetten van de "Farm Aid" concerten in 1985. Hij werd ook berucht vanwege zijn excessieve uitgaven: hij bezat een privé-vliegtuig, een eigen (kleine) stad, een enorm landgoed en een eigen golfbaan. In 1990 kreeg Nelson van de IRS (de Amerikaanse inkomstenbelastingen) echter een aanslag voor achterstallige belastingen en moest hij $16.7 miljoen ophoesten. Hij kon dit slechts betalen door zijn bezittingen van de hand te doen. Hij bracht een dubbelalbum uit ("The IRS Tapes: Who'll Buy My Memories?"), waarvan de opbrengsten rechtstreeks naar de IRS gingen. Veel van zijn bezittingen werden geveild en verkocht aan vrienden die het hem vervolgens weer teruggaven of voor een symbolisch bedrag aan hem verhuurden. In 1993 had hij al zijn schulden afbetaald. In september 2006 werd Nelson in Louisiana aangehouden voor het bezit van drugs. In de tourbus van zijn band vond de politie 100 gram 'magic mushrooms' en 700 gram marihuana.[1] Nelson werd snel weer vrijgelaten, maar zal zich voor de rechtbank moeten verantwoorden. In 2005 vormde Nelson samen met twee zakenpartners het bedrijf Willie Nelson's Biodiesel (ook bekend als "BioWillie"). Dit bedrijf verkoopt biologische brandstof aan tankstations. De brandstof wordt gemaakt van soja-olie en kan in dieselmotoren worden gebruikt zonder dat die daarvoor aangepast dienen te worden. Nelson maakt ook deel uit van een adviescommissie die poogt het gebruik van Cannabis te normaliseren. In 2005 organiseerde Nelson samen met zijn familie een benefiet-golftoernooi om de problematiek veroorzaakt door illegale verkoop van softdrugs onder de aandacht te brengen. Nelson lijkt zelf niet helemaal onbekend met het fenomeen: het gerucht gaat dat hij tijdens een bezoek aan president Jimmy Carter op het dak van het Witte Huis een blowtje heeft gerookt. In januari 2005 trad Nelson als slotact op tijdens een benefietconcert waarvan de opbrengsten ($120.000.-) naar de door de tsunami getroffen gebieden in Zuidoost-Azië gingen.
