APM Future Tense, a podcast I had subscribed to, hosted by Jon Gordon.. I went a bit hard on him in the video, but he may not deserve it.. It may be that he is just misinformed, and wanting to present new information for his listeners.. I tend to get hyper when I do videos, and go ape on the topic. But I was frustrated by the fact that he just completely skipped talking about Linux and FreeBSD and other Unix-based and Unix inspired operating systems. And jumped to a bad suggestion that Microsoft should start over with some back end project they are working on called Singularity. This video discusses that.. The Podcast was a short five minute one.. Where he suggests Vista is screwed up, everyone agrees.. Maybe people will switch to the Macintosh.. But then he introduces a friend (probably) who speculates that Microsoft could take this work they've been doing on a operating system called Singularity, and make it into an replacement for Vista, that works better and is more secure.. I went and checked up in wikipedia on what this operating system is, because wikipedia is a kind of scratching board for people who want to share tasty morsels of information in a direct and more often factual manner. So to make a long story shorter, I determined that it was really something like C# Virtual Machine.. Re-read, a Java Virtualmachine offshoot that does task switching and operating system like tasks.. Something like smalltalk? Lisp Virtual Machine? I think so.. This is a bluff.. It may not be a bluff by Microsoft, they are probably looking to make Singularity into a embedded device operating system to be used on cellphones and things like that, because if it is a virtual machine, it will be too slow to be useful in a general-use environment, and would reduce the productivity of the CPU.. This makes about as much sense as running all future applications in virtual machines that run operating systems atop other operating systems, like the Innotek VirtualBox or VMWare VMPlayer.. Microsoft wouldn't want to go there because it encourages people to run Windows in a box on their machine, and would make it therefore easy to backup and clone, which gives the user too much control and the ability to replace Microsoft. The visual space you spend with another operating system in another window on say Linux, is something that Microsoft wouldn't want because it allows people to ponder the idea "why am I using Microsoft windows" and doing the equivalent of a product comparison.. Furthermore allowing people to use two operating systems at once.. This gives Microsoft less control.. So I believe if Microsoft was serious about making a more secure environment, it would probably go towards Singularity, but they are probably afraid to pull that card out.. Here is why: - Microsoft would have to make their own hardware to run their proprietary machine (based on the virtual machine blueprint).. - Intel would likely not follow through on this hair-brained scheme, but if Microsoft was able to brainwash enough people, so as to shift the market that direction, toward Singularity. Then Intel would have to do it, or make a Java CPU.. Something Sun has already done, BTW. Microsoft stands to lose by going forward with it.. But it works as a bluff, to maybe win some trust from the existing userbase.. But this is all "virtual speak".. Microsoft doesn't seem to be saying anything like this about Singularity, this is just a little story these guys at APM Future Tense concocted to keep people interested, to make listeners go wow "these guys are ahead of the curve". It would have been more relevant for them to mention Linux in the process of talking about "blowing windows up", but I guess they are too worried to mention Linux as it was overhyped in the 90s.. It is still a relevant topic, but not as bleeding edge as reporters like.. Reporters seek for new and seemingly cutting edge information, to gain listerns/readers, but I think it would have probably been better not to have ever released this show in APM Future Tense's feed.. Because I'm dropping them from my feed list.. They are no longer relevant to me.. However I still like some of their other feeds.. This is just one feed I've recalled time and again I've been frustrated with misinformation, and have wanted to contact the author.. I send him email and he doesn't reply.. Notice that the feed doesn't have a comment area, so nobody can show him up or reveal his errors.. That's the first sign of a really bad podcast.. No comment area.. Anyhow, I can't listen to this stuff.. Note Youtube is limiting the length of video descriptions.. This is new to me.. (Less)
