By Matt Presser AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Saturday, February 16, 2008 To some, he is known as Santa Claus or The Bear. Others know him simply as Jerry, the homeless man who for about a decade has sat along South First Street near Ben White Boulevard. No matter what they call him, to those who know him, he is a gentle man who would never ask for anything. Who doesn't talk much because he is deaf. Who if you'd give him $5, would buy a Slurpee at the nearby 7-Eleven and bring you back change. No one knows much about Jerry — not even his last name. And since he disappeared from his street corner a few weeks ago, it seems no one knows where he is. His disappearance prompted a flurry of rumors and an outpouring of neighborly concern for his well-being, but Richard Troxell, president of local nonprofit House the Homeless, said it is often a long process to track down someone who has disappeared, especially without a last name. "I must know 1,500 or 2,000 people on the street by their first name," Troxell said. He said he fears that some homeless go by nicknames. "It's quite a grapevine system out here." Some fear Jerry is dead. About 5 p.m. Thursday, Bob Ratliff, 22, a Texas State University student who grew up in Austin, placed a life-sized plaster sculpture of Jerry at a bus stop where he often sat. Ratliff also left a blue composition notebook, saying he thought a few people might write down what they remember of the man. Friday afternoon, drivers who saw the sculpture pulled over. Passers-by crossed the street so they could share their memories with others who had gathered there. And more than 70 people had scribbled their messages in the notebook. "He lived on the streets, but I wouldn't say he was homeless," one note reads. "South First was his home, and Austin was his family." Belinda Vera, who lives near the corner where Jerry stayed, placed a pair of roses by the sculpture's feet. "I hadn't seen him for a few weeks. I thought maybe he had gotten ill or something," she said. "I missed him when I just didn't see him here." Josephine Ortiz and D. Soria cried, saying how much they miss seeing the man who wore multiple jackets — even during the summer — and kept all his belongings in four shopping carts on the northeast corner of the intersection. "My daughter and I went to Wal-Mart and bought him gloves and blankets," Ortiz said. "My heart went out to him. He was always out here in the rain, in the cold." "He will be missed," Soria said. "He had a lot of people that loved him. He never harmed a soul. I called him the South First Angel." Michael Troy Holliday, one of Ratliff's friends, came with his dad to remember Jerry. "Once he got here, nobody ever bothered him," Holliday said. "He just found his one place where he could just be Jerry." Added his dad, Tim Holliday: "We don't even know his last name, but everybody in Austin knew who he was." So where is Jerry? When his typically overflowing shopping carts were found tipped over and empty on the side of the road, some feared he had died and his body had been taken away. Some think he was mugged late one night. But others have more hope. An employee at Austin Regional Clinic, across the street from the sculpture, said she heard a family had adopted Jerry about a month ago. Dolores Cannon, a manager at a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant near the bus stop Jerry frequented, said one man occasionally would bring him into the restaurant and treat him to a meal. "I'm not sure where he is," she said. "I'm not sure if anybody does." Ratliff said he is energized by talk that Jerry is alive. "It'd be great if I could track him down and give him the journal and shrug it off as a little bit of a mistake on my part," Ratliff said.
