Miss Dahl portrays Jen Gort, the only woman on a treasure-laden wagon train bound from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to St. Louis, Missouri. Joel McCrea—as Will Owens—plays the train's leading outrider/scout/guide. Bluff Jesse Wallace (Barry Sullivan) joins the action as another outrider as well as Will's longtime friend and dangerous rival (in issues of leadership and love). The third outrider is gruff Clint Priest (James Whitmore), a kidney-ailin'—but loyal and energetic—friend who also happens to call a rollicking square dance. Claude Jarman Jr.—better known for his role of Jody in "The Yearling" (1946)—appears as Roy Gort, Jen's brother-in-law and "a boy who wants to be a man." Filmed beautifully and dramatically on location in Kanab, Utah, in Technicolor, "The Outriders" was more than competently directed by Roy Rowland, who also deftly helmed in 1950 one of MGM's best and unsung musicals "Two Weeks with Love." Rowland directed more than one fine Western, including "The Moonlighter" (1953/Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray), "Many Rivers to Cross" (1955/Robert Taylor, Eleanor Parker), and "Gun Glory" (1957/Stewart Granger, Rhonda Fleming). This YouTube video concentrates on a single "Outriders" scene: an evening square dance and the drama that unfolds thereat. I refer to it as remarkable because: 1) Arlene Dahl exudes the most magnificent femininity imaginable, 2) Joel McCrea's reactions to her beauty are so perfectly genuine, understatedly yearning, and manly, 3) the "emerald-slippers" sequence is a subtle, romantic master-stroke and effective "Cinderella-Prince" paraphrase, 4) the question-and-answer dialogue between Dahl and McCrea—at this clip's end—is a pearl of Romanticism: this is what two would-be lovers ought to say at such a moment.
