Up to today, I have put three hundred and eleven videos up here on YouTube, and they have been viewed nearly two million times, according to my account information on my home page. Two million hits is, I feel, a pretty amazing achievement for the music that I love. Well basically, if my hundreds of long long hours putting up free videos for you to watch, have brought you any form of enjoyment or satisfaction at all, then PLEASE PLEASE, I ask you, no I BEG you to do just one thing in return. PLEASE support the "Yesterday And Tomorrow" album, and show me that you care about this music. I have put my heart and soul, and thirty three years of my career into this album, and we're flying blind, doing it ourselves and without a distributor. Unless people take the trouble to go to our website, which at the moment has a direct link to the album on E-Bay, or unless people go onto amazon.co.uk and search for the album, they are simply not going to find it in their local shop. I put a huge amount of loving care into these videos on YouTube, and nearly two million hits prove it's not in vain. Surely you can spend just fifteen pounds of your money and buy it, just to show me I am not wasting my time. PLEASE do this for me, PLEASE. It's painful and heartwrenching to see it sell so little, mainly because it's not easily available. So PLEASE show me your support, and I shall continue to do my bit to bring you this music. I ask you not to ignore this plea - I need to see a sign that people care. I would hate to be so disheartened that I remove all my 311 videos from here. So just this once, all I ask of you is to do your bit, and please buy this one CD. This was the one time I teamed up Mary Wells with Marvin Gaye's brother Frankie, to recreate Marvin and Mary's hit, "Once Upon A Time", and watching this now, it's so hard to believe they both passed away. When we all first went to Los Angeles, in April 1989, to have a second public reunion there of all the California based former Motown artists, immediately following the one we'd just done in Detroit, Frankie came along, and we were all shocked and numbed by how much he looked like his late brother Marvin. So I had the brilliant idea of teaming him up with Mary Wells for them to re-do "Once Upon A Time". Frankie was Marvin's younger brother , and had been the inspiration for "What's Going On", and indeed Frankie sang on that, alongside Marvin, and if you listen closely you can hear both voices on there. Frankie and his wife Irene were actually in the house when Frankie's father shot Marvin dead, in 1984. Anyway, Frankie seemed such an obvious and necessary addition to Motorcity. In 1990, Frankie got to perform to a huge crowd on the rooftop of the enormous Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, on a hot humid summer Saturday night, after it had poured down all day. I was sitting next to Berry Gordy's sister, Esther Edwards, and she gasped in shock when Frankie appeared, and said it was like seeing a ghost. Sadly Frankie, just like his brother Marvin, has now passed on to that soul concert in the sky, but I shall always be so proud of working with him. And of course I recorded Mary Wells's last album before she died. Mary was a true diva, a lovely person and a dear friend. Wherever she went, her four year old daughter, Sugar, was with her. She was left without a mother at such a young age. I guess she'd be about twenty three or four now. Mary was with us in Detroit for a TV show in 1989, and she came out with the greatest line in history, which is somehow captured on a grotty dark bit of video for posterity. "When you deal with the Motown artists you're dealing with true genius. And like all true geniuses, we're all mentally disturbed". Liz Lands was there, and wholeheartedly agfreed with her. I treasure that quote. At the end of this video, I have included an amazing out-take where Mary forgets who Frankie was and calls him Marvin, because she said they could have been twins, both in appearance and vocally, and she should have known, if anyone did. This song has been cut by everybody from Barbara Streisand to Shirley Bassey to Tony Bennett to Johnny Mathis to James Ingram to Gladys Knight. But nobody did it like my girls. Jean Terrell, Scherrie Payne, and Lynda Laurence. Together they were the jewels in the crown of Motorcity. Fellow Supremes fan Rick Gianatos co-produced all their material for Motorcity with me. We had several tours of England for them, one as the headline act of a six act Motorcity Revue, one with Joe Stubbs as their warm-up act, and a couple of others. Lots of TV appearances and radio interviews, and even got a legal claim registered with the Patents Office for them to appear as The Supremes, not the Former Ladies Of The Supremes, as they had been appearing up till then. Which was actually ratified once Diana Ross went out on tour with Scherrie and Lynda, as Diana Ross And The Supremes, setting a legal precedent. For me, once Jean left, it was never the same, but that was after their Motorcity days were over. We were indeed all set to record an album, and I paid them their agreed advances, and Rick the budget, to make the agreed album. What happened then is the main reason that Motorcity ended for once and for all as a Motown Reunion project, and is still painful to me to this day, although it wasn't really the girls' fault. Some things are better left unsaid.... Anyway, this was a song that stole the show on all their live performances and we all agreed to cut it as a single. I'm very proud to have found this footage from 1989 while the girls were on tour in England. It's just a shame we didn't also have footage of their amazing fourth single for Motorcity, "Hit And Miss", which I co-wrote with Scherrie. But it's still nice to see this one again. It stands out as a glorious reunion back to where they should be in the hearts and minds of their legions of fans everywhere. (Less)

I filmed and interviewed over three hundred people and 131 artists performing their Northern Soul classic songs, for a six disc DVD box set extravaganza, called "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", with twenty four hours of footage, including some rare footage of the Motorcity reunion. The project started in 1997, was released on VHS tape and premiered to 1300 people at the King George's Hall in Blackburn in July 1999, then took four more years to refine and re-edit into its DVD release in 2003. A life's labour of love. And here, filmed while he was over appearing live in England in 1998, is a monumentally talented true soul legend, Sam Dees, who was born on December 17, 1945 in Birmingham, Alabama. Sam has earned a reputation of being a singer's singer, one of the all time soul greats, as well as being a renowned songwriter and producer. Dees was born into a large family and quickly distinguished himself with his voice. At the age of 9, already champion of several singing contests, he founded his own vocal group, the "Bossanovians". As a teenager he traveled to perform and, in 1968 he recorded his first single at Nashville, Tennessee's SSS International. He put out his next few singles on Birmingham-based Lolo Records. At the same time he was beginning to earn respect as a writer and producer. Chess Records producer Lenny Sachs gave him an opportunity to self-produce two singles on the Chess label, which Dees recorded in a former church in Birmingham. From there he began recording for Atlantic, which released his landmark album The Show Must Go On in 1975. Since then, Dees recording career moved to the back burner while he wrote hits for other singers, such as "Am I Dreaming" (Atlantic Starr), "One in a Million You" (Larry Graham), "Save the Overtime (For Me)" (Gladys Knight), "Love All the Hurt Away" (George Benson and Aretha Franklin), and "Lover for Life" (Whitney Houston). Dees continues to write and produce. He released recordings on his own Pen Pad label and also recorded for Ardent Records in England. This song, "Lonely For You Baby" has, over the years, become one of the most sought after mainstays of the Northern Soul scene, and it was a true honour to film such a legendary master craftsman for our documentary, which we first released back in 1999.
