It is less of a role-playing game, and fits better into the action-adventure category. Upon its release, the truly 3D Soul Reaver was critically acclaimed for having such a large, non-linear world to explore, no intrusive loading time between levels, excellent graphics, and the same great voice acting as its predecessor. The player takes control of Raziel, the first-born vampire lieutenant of Kain. Many centuries after the events of Blood Omen, Kain has set himself up as the emperor of Nosgoth, and the land's health is deteriorating. Raziel is faithful and loyal to his master, until one awful day. Raziel grows wings, surpassing Kain's own vampiric evolution. This is seen as a huge transgression, and Kain's response to it is to have Raziel thrown into the 'Lake of the Dead'. There he would burn forever in the swirling water of the Abyss, as water hurts Nosgothic vampires like strong acid hurts humans. Somehow, Raziel survives this execution. At the bottom of the Abyss, he meets the Elder God, a being who claims to have spared Raziel from total destruction. Raziel is no longer a vampire, but a skeletal-looking wraith, and his blood-thirst has been replaced by a hunger for souls. The Elder God offers Raziel the same opportunity that Mortanius offered Kain so long before - the chance for vengeance against those who have wronged him. What have you done with my clan degenerate!? You have no right! Kain: What I have made, I can also destroy, child. Raziel: Damn you, Kain! You are not God! This act of genocide is unconscionble! Kain: Conscience? You dare speak to me of conscience!? Only when you have felt the full gravity of choice should you dare to question my judgment! Your life's span is a flicker compared to the mass of doubt and regret that I have borne since Mortanius first turned me from the light. To know that the fate of the world hangs dependent on the advisedness of my every deed. Can you even begin to conceive what action you would take, in my position? The legends claimed that the blade was possessed and thrived by devouring the souls of its victims. For all our bravado, we knew what it meant when Kain drew the Soul Reaver in anger. It meant you were dead. [Raziel and Kain battle. Raziel does little more than scratch the mighty Kain. Kain grows weary of the battle and blasts his child with energy. Raziel falls to his knees. Kain moves in for the killing blow, but upon striking Raziel, the Soul Reaver is destroyed] Kain: The blade is vanquished. So it unfolds...and we are a step closer to our destinies. [Raziel retreats back into the spectral plane. He looks up and sees the Soul Reaver, no longer made of material things, but of pure energy, hovering above him] Raziel: I swore I saw a glint of satisfaction in Kain's eye when the Soul Reaver was destroyed. The game features a mature and well crafted story of deception, betrayal and manipulation of the main character. Kain, a nobleman in the world of Nosgoth, is murdered by assassins and offered new life as a Vampire by the necromancer Mortanius to take vengeance. Kain easily kills his murderers, but Mortanius convinces Kain that they were mere pawns and that the real perpetrators can be found at the Pillars of Nosgoth, which protect Nosgoth from destruction.
