Patricia en Alfred hadden al een zoon, Morgan en een dochter, Alison. ------------------------------- Ontdekking Nadat ze haar diploma op de high school had binnengehaald, verhuisde Carey naar New York om haar kansen om zangeres te worden te vergroten. Om aan geld te komen had ze diverse baantjes. Zo werkte ze een korte periode in een kapperswinkel. De Amerikaanse zangeres Brenda K. Starr vroeg Mariah als achtergrondzangeres voor haar platen. Toen Starr erachter kwam dat Carey over een geweldige stem beschikte en zelf ook erg graag zangeres wilde worden, zorgde zij ervoor dat Mariah met de juiste mensen in contact kwam. Tijdens een feestje in november 1988 werd Mariah door Brenda aan Tommy Mottola (directeur van platenmaatschappij SONY Music) voorgesteld. Dit wilde Carey zelf graag, aangezien ze niet gezien wilde worden als zangeres die enkel ballads kon zingen, maar ook een wat wildere kant had. De single werd Careys 3e Amerikaanse nummer 1. Na Someday verscheen er wederom een ballad, I Don't Wanna Cry. Met deze single wist de zangeres opnieuw de eerste plaats van de Billboard Hot 100 te bereiken. Hiermee vestigde Carey een record. Nog nooit eerder was het iemand gelukt om vier keer achter elkaar een nummer 1-hit te scoren, met singles die allemaal van hetzelfde album afkomstig waren. Van Mariah Carey gingen wereldwijd zo'n 17 miljoen stuks over de toonbank, waarvan 9 in Amerika alleen al. Daarnaast leverde het album de zangeres twee Grammy's op in 1991. ------------------------------- Emotions Tussen alle promotiewerkzaamheden en optredens door, werkte Carey zoveel mogelijk aan nieuw materiaal. Het beste daarvan eindigde op haar tweede album Emotions, dat in september 1991 verscheen. De eerste single ervan met dezelfde naam, werd Careys vijfde Amerikaanse nummer 1-hit, waarmee ze de eerste zangeres was die dit voor elkaar had gekregen. De verkoop van Emotions was, in tegenstelling tot het eerste album, een stuk minder. Toch had Carey een grote schare fans gekregen. De daaropvolgende singles Can't Let Go en Make It Happen haalden respectievelijk de tweede en vijfde plaats in de Billboard Hot 100. Artiesten werden door een intieme setting en uitgeklede versies van hun nummers vaak kwetsbaar neergezet. In 1992 kreeg Carey de kans om haar eigen Unplugged-album op te nemen. Naast haar eigen werk koos ze ervoor een nummer op te nemen van The Jackson Five: I'll Be There. In eerste instantie stonden er geen singles voor het live-album gepland, maar nadat het concert meerdere malen op tv was vertoond, werd SONY overladen met verzoeken of Mariah's versie van I'll Be There niet op single uitgebracht kon worden. Dat gebeurde en, wat niemand verwachtte, het eindigde op nr. 1 in de VS. Van MTV Unplugged gingen zo'n 9 miljoen stuks over de toonbank. Without You verscheen in 1994 en was een van de best verkochte singles van dat jaar in Europa. In veel landen behaalde Carey met deze coverversie van Harry Nilsson de nummer 1-positie. Gek genoeg kwam Without You in de VS - ondanks enorme airplay op Amerikaanse radio- & tv-zenders, niet hoger dan nr. 3 in de Billboard Hot 100. De verkoop van de daaropvolgende single Anytime You Need A Friend was teleurstellend. Voor de eerste maal bereikte Carey met een single niet de top 10. Het nummer bleef steken op de 12e plaats in Amerikaanse hitlijsten. Music Box groeide daarentegen uit tot een enorm succes. Het schijfje ging maar liefst 30 miljoen keer over de toonbank. Wat trots werd bekend gemaakt door Sony Music destijds omdat dit Carey schaarde onder slechts enkele artiesten die met n album meer dan 30 miljoen stuks wist te verkopen. Het werd in de VS wegens 10 keer platina bekroond met een Diamond Award. Tot op heden is dit Mariah's meest succesvolle album en best verkochte plaat. ------------------------------- Merry Christmas Een lang gekoesterde wens van Carey, een kerstalbum opnemen, ging in 1994 in vervulling. Halverwege het jaar dook de zangeres de studio in om aan dit project te gaan werken. Naast bekende traditionele kerstliedjes schreef de zangeres zelf 4 nieuwe composities voor dit album, waaronder All I Want for Christmas Is You. Dit nummer verscheen als eerste single van de plaat in november '94 en werd overal (met uitzondering van de VS waar de single niet commericiel werd gelanceerd) een groot succes. Velen zien All I Want For Christmas als een echte kerstklassieker. Jaarlijks wordt het nummer tijdens de feestdagen veel gedraaid op radio en televisie. Van het album Merry Christmas werden wereldwijd ongeveer 16 miljoen stuks verkocht, wat dit het best verkochte kerstalbum ooit maakte. In diverse landen werd de verkoop van het album gestimuleerd door de releases van promotiesingles, zoals Jesus Born On This Day, O Holy Night en Miss You Most (At Christmas Time). ------------------------------- Daydream Een groot deel van 1995 besteedde Carey aan het maken van haar volgende album. Als voorloper van het project verscheen in september de single Fantasy. Het nummer had veel weg van Dreamlover, maar was wel meer georinteerd op hiphop en r&b. De single was wederom een mijlpaal in Careys carrire. In Amerika scoorde ze er haar 9e nummer 1-hit mee. Qua sound was te horen dat Mariah een iets andere kant was opgeslagen, zoals ze in Fantasy al had aangegeven: meer hiphop en r&b. Vlak voor Kerstmis dat jaar verscheen de tweede single van het album, One Sweet Day. Het was een duet tussen Carey en de Amerikaanse soulgroup Boyz II Men. De zangeres was al jaren een groot fan van de band. Het nummer was gebaseerd op het overlijden van David Cole (een songwriter met wie Mariah veel samenwerkte) en de manager van Boyz II Men. Van dit concert verschenen een cd, VHS en dvd die allen uitgroeiden tot grote successen. Gezien al haar Amerikaanse nummer 1-successen werd besloten om een verzamelalbum uit te brengen, met daarop de desbetreffende hits. Het album verscheen onder de titel #1's, eind 1998 en bevatte - naast alle Amerikaanse nummer 1 -singles - ook enkele nieuwe opnames, waaronder Sweetheart met Jermaine Dupri, I Still Believe (een ode aan zangeres Brenda K. Starr die dit nummer in de jaren 80 voor het eerst opnam) en een duet tussen Mariah en aartsrivale Whitney Houston. Het nummer, getiteld When You Believe, was tevens de titelsong voor de aminatiefilm The Prince Of Egypt. Mariah liet haar fans weten dat het bij #1's niet om een greatest hits-album ging, maar dat het een bedankje was voor het feit dat ze zoveel nummer 1-hits had kunnen scoren door de jaren heen. Een greatest hits-cd zou in een later stadium uitkomen. Alle nieuw opgenomen tracks verschenen afzonderlijk op singles in 1998 en 1999. Opzienbarend was dat het duet tussen tussen Mariah en Whitney Houston in Amerika niet hoger kwam dan nr. 15 in de Billboard Hot 100, ondanks dat de single gepaard ging met veel airplay. Het leverde de zangeressen zelfs een Oscar op voor Best Original Song. Buiten de VS was When You Believe wel een groot succes. In veel landen wisten de diva's (die door de jaren heen telkens met elkaar werden vergeleken en dus volgens velen wel een hekel aan elkaar zouden hebben, hetgeen nu niet waar bleek te zijn) de top 10 te behalen. ------------------------------- Rainbow 1999 was het jaar waarin Carey haar zoveelste studioalbum lanceerde. Rainbow was weer een typische Mariah Carey-plaat la Daydream en Butterfly en had wederom de juiste ingredinten om een succes te worden. De eerste single Heartbreaker was een samenwerking tussen Carey en rapper Jay-Z en werd Mariah's 14e Amerikaanse nummrt 1-single. Hiermee werd ze de enige zangeres in de Amerikaanse muziekgeschiedenis die zoveel nr. 1-singles had weten te scoren. Het album Rainbow verscheen kort na de release van de single en was een succes, maar wist de eerste plaats in de VS niet te halen. Na Emotions werd dit haar minst verkochte album. Wereldwijd werden er van het schijfje 10 miljoen stuks verkocht. De tweede single werd Thank God I Found You, dat Carey opnam met zanger Joe en boyband 98 Degrees. Het werd haar 15e nummer 1-hit in Amerika, opnieuw een record voor de zangeres. Sinds haar debuut in 1990 was het haar gelukt om ieder jaar een nummer 1-hit te scoren in Amerika, wat haar de best verkopende artiest van de jaren 90 maakte. Eind 1999 werd bekend dat Carey wereldwijd zo'n 80 miljoen albums had verkocht: een unicum. Met Rainbow ging Mariah voor de tweede keer op wereldtournee. Ze behaalde er opnieuw grote successen mee. Helaas stelde Carey haar Nederlandse fans teleur, toen bleek dat de Rainbow World Tour haar niet naar Nederland zou brengen. Wel gaf Carey een uitverkocht optreden in Belgi. ------------------------------- De breuk met SONY Music Na de wereltournee besloot Carey om het nummer Can't Take That Away als volgende single uit te brengen. Het nummer had een speciale betekenis voor haar en om die reden wilde ze het graag delen met haar fans. Bij SONY Music was men niet zo blij met haar keuze. Men vond daar dat de nieuwe single een uptempoliedje moest worden, een single die de verkoop van het album beter zou stimuleren. Mariah kreeg het gevoel dat het label haar niet begreep. De zangeres was natuurlijk een goudmijn, die als artieste moeilijk te doorkruisen was en dat was iets wat SONY goed wist. Carey kreeg haar zin en Can't Take That Away verscheen op single. De relatie tussen Carey en SONY verslechterde en de scheiding tussen Carey en Mottola leek hier grotendeels mee te maken te hebben. Carey begon berichtjes op haar website te plaatsen waarin ze haar fans verzocht om Can't Take That Away zoveel mogelijk aan te vragen op hun lokale radiostation. Een van de desbetreffende berichten: "Basically, a lot of you know that the political situation in my professional career is not positive. It's been really, really hard. Dit werd gezien als de allergrootste platendeal uit de geschiedenis van de muziek. De langverwachte speelfilm Glitter en de gelijknamige soundtrack verschenen op 11 september 2001. Als eerste single werd het nummer Loverboy uitgebracht. Wegens de aanslagen in de VS op 11 september werd de presentatie van het album uitgesteld, maar achteraf gezien bleek dat het album niet de juiste capaciteiten had om een succes te worden. Zowel de film als de soundtrack flopten genadeloos. Er gingen van het album slechts 2 miljoen stuks over de toonbank, wat erg weinig is voor een artiest die altijd meer dan 5 a 10 miljoen stuks van ieder album weet te verkopen. Hierna stortte Mariah (wegens een overvolle agenda) volledig in. Ze stortte fysiek en emotioneel in. Vervolgens werd de zangeres een poosje in een rusthuis verpleegd. Concerten die ze in Japan en Australi had gepland, werden om die reden afgezegd. Rond diezelfde periode bracht SONY Music een Greatest Hits-album op de markt, waarvan een magere 3 miljoen exemplaren wereldwijd werden verkocht. Voor de speelfilm Wise Girls (waarin Carey haar tweede filmrol had) werd de promotie wegens Careys instorting stopgezet. In 2002 bleek dat Emi-Virgin van de zangeres af wilde, omdat het project Glitter was geflopt. Het label kocht het contract van Mariah voor een fractie van het oorspronkelijke bedrag af. Ook verloor de zangeres in dat jaar haar vader. ------------------------------- Charmbracelet In 2002 tekende Mariah een platencontract bij Universal Music. Hierna legde ze zich toe op het maken van een nieuw album dat haar een comeback moest bezorgen. Aan het eind van het jaar verscheen de single Through The Rain, een autobiografische ballad waarin Carey zong over de slechte periode die ze had meegemaakt. Het nummer werd in eerste instantie alleen buiten Amerika uitgebracht. In veel landen scoorde Carey er een hit mee. In 2002 werd de single alsnog in de VS uitgebracht maar bereikte geen hoge positie in de Billboard Hot 100: nummer 81. Een danceversie van het nummer was op de Amerikaanse radiozenders populairder dan het origineel. Het nieuwe album Charmbracelet zag net voor Kerstmis het daglicht. De verkoop viel tegen. Er gingen 2,5 miljoen stuks van over de toonbank. Daarop uitgebrachte singles wisten het album niet naar een hoger niveau te krijgen. Toch ging Carey met dit album in 2003 op wereldtournee, een tour waarmee ze diverse kleinere zalen aandeed. Er gingen geruchten dat het publiek niet warm liep voor de tickets, maar Mariah ontkende dit en verklaarde dat ze juist in kleinere zalen wilde optreden om zo een meer intieme sfeer met haar fans te krijgen. Tijdens deze tour bezocht de zangeres voor de tweede keer Nederland. In Ahoy Rotterdam gaf ze een avondvullende show. Halverwege de tour scoorde Carey een hit met het nummer I Know What You Want, wat ze opnam met rapper Busta Rhymes. In oktober verscheen er een dubbelalbum met daarop remix-versies van Carey's succesvolste singles onder de titel The Remixes. Na de tour lastte de zangeres een lange rustpauze in. ------------------------------- The Emancipation Of Mimi Medio 2005 liet de zangeres weer van zich horen met de single It's Like That, afkomstig van het nieuwe album The Emancipation Of Mimi. De single bereikte de 16e plaats van de Amerikaanse hitlijsten. Het nieuwe album kwam - een week na de release - nieuw binnen op de eerste plaats. Om op het succes verder te liften verscheen er al vrij snel een tweede single: We Belong Together. Wegens airplay op radio en televisie in de VS, bereikte Mariah (na 5 jaar) de eerste plaats van de Billboard Hot 100, haar 16e Amerikaanse nummer 1-succes. Het album werd meerdere malen met platina bekroond en was wereldwijd een groot succes. Met We Belong Together scoorde Carey haar grootste hit sinds jaren. Haar carrire zat duidelijk weer in de lift. Van The Emancipation Of Mimi verschenen in een later stadium nog de singles Shake It Off, Don't Forget About Us (Careys 17e Amerikaanse nummer 1-hit), Get Your Number en Fly Like A Bird. Het album kreeg acht nominaties voor de Grammy Awards. Ondanks dat wist Carey slechts 3 van de nominaties te verzilveren. Voor de film schreef Mariah samen met Willie Nelson het nummer: Right to dream. Dit nummer is speciaal voor het karakter Krystal geschreven en is Mariah's eerste country nummer. Inmiddels heeft Mariah ook haar eigen parfumlijn in de Verenigde Staten met succes gelanceerd, welke de passende naam "M" draagt. De geur schijnt onder andere te ruiken naar Marshmallows. Dit omdat dit bijzondere herinneringen uit het verleden bij de zangeres zou oproepen. Mariah is momenteel bezig met de laatste hand te leggen aan haar nieuwe album. Efron in the movies, Martin in the stage production that comes to Boston Oct. 31-Nov. 4. That's where the similarities end. While Efron dates his leading lady - Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Gabriella in the movie - Martin is just friends with his, Arielle Jacobs. "She has a really cool boyfriend," Martin said. Originally a made-for-TV movie on the Disney Channel, the show follows basketball star Troy and brainy Gabriella as they try out for the school musical all the while breaking away from their respective cliques. Martin, who still hasn't seen either the first or second movie from start to finish, says his Troy Bolton is nothing like Efron's. "I met him once. He's a little shorter, he's from the West Coast, he's a movie star. I'm a tall Broadway guy from the East Coast. He sings more of pop style and I sing more like rock," said Martin who hails from Long Island, N.Y., and has been in "Hairspray," "Rocky Horror," and "Good Vibrations," on Broadway. "We couldn't have been any more different if we tried," he said. "It's cool to get to play the part. He's definitely given me a headstart because he did a great job and everyone loves him so much." Like many stories before it, "High School Musical" tackles issues of popularity, cliques and peer pressure. Through catchy songs like "Get'cha Head in the Game" and "What I've Been Looking For," and high-energy dancing, the production encourages its impressionable audience to chase their dreams and find what makes them passionate - regardless of their social standing in the high school hierarchy. "The story and the script are just really rich with good messages," Martin said. Performing eight shows a week and bringing it night after night is the challenging part of being a performer, Martin said. But it doesn't take much to make him happy. "I like my hotel room this week. It's got really good wireless and a comfortable bed," he said. Martin said his favorite songs to perform are "Get'cha Head In The Game" and Troy's duet with Gabriella for "When There was Me and You." After five months on the road playing smaller cities and towns, he said he's looking forward to coming to Boston, though he admits to being a New York Mets fan. "I've been to Fenway. I wouldn't say that I'm a Red Sox fan, but I'm a Red Sox appreciator," he said, laughing.
