Over the course of the afternoon, all stood on the small platform by the bandstand in opposition to teen violence at the "Summer of Peace" rally. The idea for the rally first came from Fidel Verdin, who has organized similar events on smaller scales before. Verdin and two others, Langston Williams and Garnell Murray, were the rally's key organizers. George Martin, program director for Peace Action Wisconsin and a neighborhood resident, spoke for 10 minutes to a group of young children, encouraging them to promote peace through their actions in life. He invited the 20 or so kids to join him on stage, and they all shouted "Peace!" "People think about war and international issues, but it's important we bring that back to our own communities," Martin said of the event's significance. "We let the young people know they are not alone. . . . They are somebody and they have a future." Williams and Murray agreed that the rally was a place, even if for only a day, for kids to express themselves. "We're here to give kids positive things they can do. And this is just the beginning," Murray said. Among performers were the African Soul Steppers, a group of five traditional African dancers ages 12 to 15, and the TBSs, or the 20th Street Ballers, a hip-hop outfit. The group's nine members, several of whom are related, range in age from 9 to 16 and rapped about staying off drugs and in school. At the end of the rally, Verdin had everyone come to the stage and sign the "Peace Pledge," which states: "I promise to help make my community a more peaceful place by practicing non-violent solutions to problems. I promise to help make the world a more peaceful place by respecting myself and others." And as a throng of young people rushed up to sign, Verdin called out to a journalist and told him, "Hey, newsman, get over here! This is news. These are young people pledging peace." Later, he said, "We're catching them while they're young . . . so, by the time they're 17 and 18, they won't be wandering out on the streets." (Less)
