News)about one of the various: City and Fascist Merchant-imposed efforts, throughout the years, to hamper & shut down popular street entertaining; a less-loud-than-bars, cultural asset to the community. In most of the incidents of selective repression, bar owners have, not surprisingly, escaped most of the measures, which have been dressed up to the public as noise or crowd "control" measures. Incredibly the city and it's channel 5 media cohorts continued this attempt in spite of the known fact that crime, such as shootings, in these districts - invariably erupted from inside those same bars, of which owners kept public officials at their beck & call. Some of the main street entertainers, like Danny, also play other gigs, but shouldn't be stripped of rights to this venue. It is argued by many that Danny changed the face of street entertainment, adding class to it. After the onset of his tenure in the area, public image of streeet players has made a dramatic upturn. The trade benefitted from his influence. He gradually developed the act in to a more and more sophisticated viable part of the overall entertainment for the town, and thus, the performing income to be made, locally. It is a reflection on his character that he was able to do all of this with ammicability regarding the rest of the community, co-existing with it in a unique way, for years before unrelated factors and forces began to bring about the efforts of special interest-catering oppression. It is worthy of noting that during that so-called grace period - discussed in this channel 4 news story, for the then- impending Cleaver-endorsed, rules in the Westport part of town; the city police (some working for the bar owners) became more and more antsy and disrespectful. So, two weeks into that "grace," a dispute arose when a rogue security cop accusing Danny of parking in the wrong place. Doing so when Danny returned to the area to a patient audience of about 50 people who'd waited as he fetched gas for his generator. This rent-a-cop, whose only actual duties were to guard property in the district, bolted into the middle of Danny's set-up as Danny had just resumed playing to the crowd, and slapped a hand cuff on him. Knowing the security guard (one already notorious for repressive random acts to associates of Danny & bucking for political points with bar owners who were jealous of the popularity of Danny's street act) was attmepting to exceed his jurisdication, Danny wouldn't allow the guard to put the other cuff on, siting his lack of authority. When some K.C.P.D. officers-also working for bar owners,off duty,in uniform-arrived, the matter was discussed and was almost resolved, however, when Danny merely pointed out that since the security guard had tipped over Danny's guitar in the shuffle, that guard was responsible if the spill had damaged it - upon hearing this, the K.C.P.D. officer in charge suddenly flew into a rage and - before the entire crowd who'd viewed Danny's show, with assistance from the other officers and the guard, proceeded to handcuff Danny, so he couldn't break his fall, then drove him head-first into the sidewalk, before placing him in jail - injured head & all. In some cities, talent like Danny's would have been encouraged to where, by now, it would have most likely ballooned out to the point that Danny would most likely have been able to re-invest it in the community, in the form of coffee houses or folk music museums or music&entertainment instruction places or whatever. Do the words greedy,self-serving, crooked, non-representative-of- the-public-it-should-serve, proud-to-have- hick-mentality-while-trying-to-pass-themselves-off-as-keepers-of-reputed-long-gone-music-historicity; or Microcosm (town) overrun by unprogressive; dangerously brutal, veritably communistic regime; denying of free market-tested self-starters to ensure it keeps in place its acquired system of hooked-on-T.I.F.F. hand outs, and affirmative action-related initiatives-ONLY mentality - poor excuse for a community; come to mind? Description: Street Performance excerpts in K.C., Danny Slade Croman: musician/comic/song writer - and Friends, performances for voluntary donations: (In spite of Strained Voice in much of this (Danny's voice (More) Street Performance excerpts in K.C., Danny Slade Croman: musician/comic/song writer - and Friends, performances for voluntary donations: (In spite of Strained Voice in much of this (Danny's voice is much different when not as strained, such as you can hear in some of the other postings and most of his audio recorded material of both original and adaptation of classics)):Danny solo at Art Fair '06 including The Requested Off-The-Cuff "Meriam Girls Boogy Woogy" for lifetime friend Tim B.'s wife dedicated to his daughters; & excerpts of requested Zep, with ad-lib ending which has Plaza streets friend Chris wailing on the latter portion, he also appears in "King Of The Road Medley," playing keys in the keys/harmonica jam excerpt portion. 2nd set of clips, here, is from July '03 with fave trio Danny, Gary A. & Bev M.. The keys weere sticking a bit on In Crowd excerpt, but overall good sound was delivered, especially with the quirks considered. In The Powder Finger excerpt from '05 Art Fair, Danny's longtime friend and long since past fellow Pizza job co-worker Carlos was singing along. The amplification and instruments had to be set up twice that outing - no thanks to local radio station d.j. dorks competing for the spot, prompting extra positioning while they remained there broadcasting. The gear even had to be under an umbrella some of the time that evening. Once finally sandwiched into the spot it was in, here, it couldn't be fussed with, raised on its already shaky tri-pod, in time to catch the remaining crowd, not after the various slowing-down factors. Especially so, considering the cramped quarters the gear was situated at, within the confines of large foot traffic. So, as is sometimes the case, the cam was just clicked and left on as-was, and part of the mostly audio recording for the night. The audio caught here, despite all the problems getting things situated, yielded a good recording and example of a vocal and one instrument take with which Danny is happy with, despite a bit of distortion (they were rockin' those yuppies out!). It was also a sentimental fave, seeing & singing with an old buddy, and fellow picker, who Danny at one time taught some guitar, and nice guy who appreciates the Solo Act enough to always tip, and singing a song which that cool pal periodically requests, though they only run into each other occasionally, a song that both people really dig. And, lastly, comedy/music excerpts from rented cam late 80's comedy club spot. (Less)

Includes excerpts of a video shot of "Never...Spain" adaptation by a photog who was passing through in Westport (early 90's), who also sings, & who had rhythm guitar; vocals; and finger snapping added to the audio of that video-at a studio in North Carolina where the photog. resides. (several voice straining takes were taped for the raw footage made after quitting time for Danny's street show for the night, wee hours in Westport)Also includes some Robert Z. and Brownsville S. On the first footage here, it is a continution of excerpts, began on the next-most-recent posting ("Croman, adaptations-ad-lib;L.Z..etcetera"), of a comedy club open microphone appearance - during time Danny was catching paid work billed as "comedy" around the two-state area, in addition to his all-music gigs and street playing venue. The comedy, which was actually music/comedy, helped him form his present day "half serious musician/half jokster" peforming style. This particular set, excerpted from, was on one of many nights in which he - along with other working and amateur comics - put in time for exposure and practice at open microphone nights at area clubs known for that, a group that enjoyed company amongst others of like mind. One of the performances on Westport's streets excerpted here, you see former partner Tara Quirk and Danny playing a tune, a little past the time of their main partnership. The tune, one of several the pair had down pat, always went over well both there and at the Snafu club where they also did several gigs together. It is not only a good example displaying Danny's self-base- accompanying/intricate picking style which makes a fuller than average sound for a solo act or one-instrument minimalist combos. Having developed the style enabled him to better emulate the appropriate sounds the public recalls on the popular versions (and not an easy adaptation to make) without cheesy foot orchestra-in-a-can peddles or drum machines. The picking style has been part of Danny's signature performing style - which helped solidify some suceess for him as a performer over the years, albeit in a role once thought of as unconventional. The video also gives a glimpse at what a natural Tara Q. is at singing. Starting from her time playing with and learning from Danny, she began expanding out to playing, first, guitar then several instruments. She was, in fact, so natural - that practically any instrument you set in front of her, she'd play it in a way which did it justice, and then some. In the era when Danny used to set up a full drum kit on Westport's streets, on one memorable occasion Danny started in playing The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys, and without hesitation Tara kicked in the difficult percussion for the tune, doing so the first time she ever attemped the song, and having barely played drums at all, prior. She not only played it but did so better than many long time drummers this author has heard try the song. She remains a favorite performer to this author amongst all his associations in the area, she's developed some very good original songs, also. Not all of the footage would transcribe to d.v.d., in fact the tracking nomily seen actually damaged the beginning of that clip on the original tape. It's a drag but that's the way it goes sometimes dealing with recordings. As far as the method of facing the camera towards the passers-by and listeners, there are several factors in why that method was used, and with more rapidity in the earlier years. Firstly, in many cases the camcorder was used primarily to get the audio of the performance. Also, in some of the areas performed in, to have placed the video camera at the proper distance away from the performer would have both posed risks of it been knocked down and in some instances stolen. So duck taping the tripod somewhere along the wall behind, close enough to keep an eye on it, yet in a place where it could at least be focused on something, capture-able for posterity - in addition to the audio, helped prevent said risks. Also a side benefit, in some case was that pointing towards the audience allowed for the audience to feel an equal part in a show, they are, after all, supporting it, usually. In that way, certain areas lent themselves well to demo videos in which the excitement of the crowd enjoying the performance was a way to give potential employers of the performer a glimpse of the affect he has on his audience. For a street performer to have a camera trained on himself for great lengths of time, amongst certain types of audiences, would not be too acceptable a way to do things. The people watching aspect of the videos is also excellent, and video-taping performances can also help the performer memorize crowd members who only show up occasionally, helping to put names with faces.
