The audible phenomenon is produced by Coronal Mass Ejections - plasma bursts on the surface of the sun, associated with sunpots and solar flares, which excite radio-emissions that manifest on terrestrial shortwave radio. Because of its obvious similarity to the sound of rolling surf, this phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the "seashore effect". Sci-fi author JG Ballard wrote (in the commentary to "The Atrocity Exhibition" published in 1990) that "a huge volume of radio signals reach this planet from space... the hope remains that one day we will decode them, and find... a spontaneously generated choral music, a naive electromagnetic architecture, the primitive synthax of a philosophical system, as meaningless but as reassuring as the pattern of waves on a beach". "Stargate" was exhibited at The Foundry in London (Oct-Nov 2006) and as a massive 3-dimensional sound installation at Kiasma, Helsinki (Feb-March 2001), alongside work by John Wynne, Jem Finer of The Pogues, Patrick Kosk, Mikko Masaalo, Oivind Weingaarde and David Cunningham of The Flying Lizards, and had a significant influence on Jem's later work (Jem and Ansuman Biswas also heard other Disinformation VLF and radioastronomy exhibits at Hull Time Based Arts). "Stargate" was also exhibited at Event gallery, London in March 2006, and recently presented at the Open Ear event at Canterbury Christ Church University, and at Another Roadside Attraction and at Goldsmiths College in London. Unlike virtually all Sci-Art projects that (after this original) explored similar imagery, "Stargate" is a literally no-budget, totally DIY project - realised with miniscule resources, using entirely borrowed equipment, without any institutional support or funding, and without any help from professional scientists. This material was also reissued as a track on the "R&D2" CD released by Ash International in 1997, and remixes by Chris and Cosey, People Like Us (Vicki Bennett) and Mark Poysden appear on the "Antiphony" double CD. The most recent reissue appears as a soundtrack to the film "Brilliant Noise" by Semiconductor, released on the "Worlds in Flux" DVD by Fatcat Records in 2007 (where the original Disinformation track appears alongside work by Max Richter, The Twilight Sad, Christian Vogel, Ensemble, Robert Hampson, Iris Garrelfs, Antenna Farm, Our Brother the Native, Gaeoudjiparl and Thomas Dimuzio). The "Stargate" title is intended as a self-evident homage to the film of the same name, and to the track "A Gate Into The Stars" by Japanese composer Somei Satoh. "Blackout" was conceived as an installation supplement to Sound Mirror images by photographer Julian Hills (taken in January 1996) which appear on the sleeve of the Disinformation "Antiphony" double remix CD, published by the record company Ash International in 1997 [1] [2]. Barry Hale's Sound Mirror video has been shown at NTT ICC (Tokyo), The Royal College of Art (London), Galerie fur Zeitgenossische Kunst (Leipzig), The Art House (London), Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt), The Dom (Moscow), and exhibited at The ICA (London), CCCB (Barcelona), The Mac (Birmingham), Now 1999 (Nottingham), Waygood Gallery (Newcastle), Quay Arts (Isle of Wight), Wrexham Arts Centre, South Hill Park (Bracknell), Saltburn Artists Projects, Q Gallery (Derby), Study Gallery of Modern Art (Poole), Event Gallery (London), Ginza Art Lab (Tokyo) and The Latvian National Museum of Art. The long version of this film runs just short of 20 minutes, and (even in 2008) remains one of the most comprehensive visual surveys of these extraordinary structures ever conducted. One element notable by its absence from this edit is the long (and beautiful) abstract sequence which Barry created for the middle of the full version of this film. This video is virtually identical to later films by Tacita Dean and Lise Autogena, etc [3], and if there is any confusion about the similarity between the original Sound Mirrors film and Tacita Dean's (much later) film "Sound Mirrors", readers should refer to art historian and curator Anda Rottenberg's letter to Art Monthly [4] about the similarity between artist Katarzyna Kozyra's film "Bath House" - of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest, and Tacita Dean's (much later) film "Gellert" - also of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest! What's most surprising is the fact that Tacita Dean's "Sound Mirrors" was commissioned (by The Public Art Development Trust) AFTER these "methods" had been exposed in the art press. In a virtuoso display of institutional gullibility, a plan by artist Lise Autogena to build 2 new communicating sound mirrors received funding from The Royal Society of Arts "Art for Architecture" scheme, The Arts Council England, Creative Partnerships, Shepway District Council and South East Arts, and support from Arts Catalyst, Demos, Fondation de France, and £70,000 from The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, despite Autogena freely admitting that (in her own words) she knows "absolutely nothing" [5] about acoustics! Anyone with any knowledge of meteorological or acoustic science would know that any proposal to use parabolic reflectors to transmit human speech across the English channel always was inherently technically unsound. However, when in trouble, reach for the "community", so this expenditure has not only been rationalised as a product of "idealism", but also justified on grounds that it provided opportunities to host workshops teaching schoolkids about (no kidding) "science". Despite the precedents, Autogena's website declares her ideas to be "groundbreaking" and "innovative" (!) and (equally predictably) contains passages that are almost verbatim quotes from earlier "Antiphony" texts. Writing in The Guardian, Tom Dyckhoff reported Autogena's promise to deliver the finished project "in 2002"... six years later, you'd have thought the penny might have dropped, but resources are still being diverted away from viable projects to try and keep this one afloat. The greater tragedy is that in response to increased public interest, a deep trench has now been cut in front of the main Sound Mirror site, which can only be crossed over a metal swing-bridge, which is normally locked shut - in other words the great and the good have responded to public enthusiasm for the Sound Mirrors, by spending public money on restricting public access to the Sound Mirrors. The original version of this artwork was designed by Joe Banks and published on the gatefold insert to the "Antiphony" double CD (of Disinformation remixes) in 1997, and was reproduced in several magazine articles about Disinformation. A rough draft of the film version was animated in Quicktime, with the Flash version (from which this clip is derived) being animated by Ben Moat in 1999. Where the best version of Disinformation's "Theophany" sound installation lasts for just 0.083 seconds, the "Angel" video clocks in at a whopping 4 seconds! Oscillating between more "serious" technical projects and what one might call contemporary anthropology, a great deal of early Disinformation repertoire drew on the techniques, imagery and folklore associated with radio and radar research, defence electronics and geomagnetism etc; and even though the suggestion was clearly never serious, nonetheless the idea that stray radar traces might represent flight-paths of angels, resembles the idea that stray radio signals might represent voices of ghosts, and the idea that VLF radio "whistlers" (heard on German army field telephones during WW1) might be "ghosts" of artillery shells passing overhead. Description: This sequence relates to the sound installation and concert event held in September 1998 in the decommissioned RAF ROTOR radar bunker and Regional Seat of Government, under a field at Troywood, near (More) This sequence relates to the sound installation and concert event held in September 1998 in the decommissioned RAF ROTOR radar bunker and Regional Seat of Government, under a field at Troywood, near Anstruther, Fife, Scotland. The bunker was built over 24,000 square feet, 100 feet underground, inside a subterranean tungsten Faraday cage designed to protect RAF communications equipment from the disruptive effects of the Electromagnetic Pulse (or EMP) radiated by an atom bomb. Disinformation performed a DJ set, and exhibited the "National Grid" electromagnetic sub-bass sound installation, in the National Grid access chute in the bunker's main entry corridor. The "Theophany" (Voice of God) sound installation was also exhibited in the (intensely surreal surroundings of the) bunker's underground chapel. The conceptual premise of exhibiting "Theophany" here was the hypothesis that noise derived from the radio recordings of Very Low Frequency (VLF) "whistler" phenomena (produced by electric storms) that were used in this exhibit, should (based on a careful reading of scientific, peace-studies, military and non-proliferation literature) closely resemble recordings of hydrodynamic whistlers radiated by EMPs in a nuclear war. As an exercise in theological sarcasm, in this context "Theophany" identifies a putative Voice of God as analogous to the music of a nuclear Apocalypse. Before anybody gets the wrong idea however, it should be pointed out that Disinformation is a secular (and humanist) project - as discussed in a BBC radio interview about the bunker event, "Theophany" is intended as a parody of a work of the same name by the religious composer John Tavener. There was also a conceptual twist relating to the theological implications of scientist Robert Oppenheimer's (sacriligious) use of the name "Trinity" for the famous nuclear test site at Jornada del Muerto ("Death Tract"), Alamogordo, White Sands, New Mexico. These ideas were discussed in a leaflet circulated to visitors, and this theme is also explored in Disinformation's "Spellbound" video installation - subtitled "An Allegorical Portrait of J Robert Oppenheimer". An article about this event - "Silence of the Suns" by Simon Worthington (with photographs by Joe Banks) appeared in Mute magazine issue 12, and is available on the www.metamute.com website. The Royal Institution event was programmed by writer and artist Tom McCarthy (of The International Necronautical Society), and included (amongst others) inventor and artist Tim Hunkin and historian-of-science Patricia Fara in the audience. The Cargo show also featured Tetine (hey y'all - visible in the video), Cursor Miner and Ommm, with DJs Jonny Trunk, Mr Psyche and Jim Backhouse. The Westbourne Studios show also featured presentations by artists Alex Baker, Jordan Baseman, Alexander Costello, Phil Coy, Shezad Dawood, Andrew Dodds, Maria Fusco, Lizzie Hughes, Thorsten Knaub, Susan Pui San Lok, The People Speak, Michael Pinsky, Thomson & Craighead and Mark Titchner. The Bad Timing event at The Junction in Cambridge also featured Bugbrand Audio and Andrew Coleman. The original performance version of "National Grid" premiered at a Disobey club night, organised by Blast First Records in 1996, which also featured music by DJ Beekeeper (aka Bruce Gilbert from the band Wire) and a reading by Bill Drummond of The KLF, and which included (amongst many others) writer Kathy Acker in the audience. Other performance versions of "National Grid" were performed alongside composer Nic Collins and sound artist Janek Schaefer at Berlin's Volksbühne and Karlsruhe's ZKM, and alongside Add N to (X) at Disinformation's nuclear bunker event near Anstruther, Scotland. The "Noise" exhibition at Kettle's Yard was curated by the artist Adam Lowe and Cambridge historian of science Prof Simon Schaffer. "The Analysis of Beauty" installation takes its name from the book of the same name written and published by the painter, engraver and satyrist William Hogarth in 1753. On account of the (subjective, but strong) similarity between the imagery of this installation and DNA (this similarity was pointed out to Adam Lowe by Joe Banks) this work was exhibited directly opposite one of Francis Crick and James Watson's original models of DNA (notwithstanding the fact that James Watson since decided to hand a propaganda coup to racists by promoting views that are based more on pub-wisdom than empirical evidence). The sinusoidal patterns visible in this installation produce an optical illusion known as the Kinetic Depth Effect - whereby impressions of "sculptural" form emerge despite the absence of any of the (object) precedence, (geometric and aerial) perspective, stereopsis and (motion) parallax cues traditionally thought to determine visual perception of three-dimensional space. After a little while, the lines may appear to fuse into a rising column or rotating vortex (this impression and its changes in orientation are not generated on-screen, but inside the mind of the viewer). The jumpiness and rough quality of You Tube sequences can compromise the formation of this illusion (it works alot better in real life than it does on video), so it may be necessary to let the data for entire clip load completely into You Tube once, before watching the video for a 2nd time, to achieve a smoother image. You may find the image clearer if viewed at the smallest You Tube magnification (buttons to the bottom right of the You Tube screen). Some changes in rotational orientation take place spontaneously, others may be induced by tilting the head from side to side, by blinking, or simply by THINKING about this imagery in a different way. Although there are superficial visual similarities with the film "Equation X+X=0" (made by Robert Fairthorne and Brian Silk in 1936), "The Analysis of Beauty" is arguably one of the strangest Science Fiction films ever made. Although "The Analysis of Beauty" gallery exhibit also features small sculptures, images and text, the technical set-up that produces the central image (as pointed out in "The Rumble" catalogue) strongly resembles the idea of ultrasonic visual music, played with cathode ray tube and tone generators, described by Sci-Fi author J.G. Ballard in his classic short story "The Sound Sweep" (Nova 1962). "The Analysis of Beauty" featured in 8 Disinformation solo exhibitions, and has also been exhibited at (in "The Rumble" exhibition at) The Royal British Society of Sculptors (London), Sonar at CCCB (Barcelona), The Chamber of Pop Culture (London), Study Gallery of Modern Art (Poole), Orleans House Gallery (Twickenham), and gave its name to the Disinformation UK national touring exhibition, supported by The Arts Council England. A dedicated "The Analysis of Beauty" exhibition was also proposed to Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art curator Alistair Robinson in Jan 2003, 18 months before NGCA took the idea, to stage a show of the exact same name, described as "pretty ugly" by The Guardian, which even managed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Hogarth's "Analysis" in the wrong year (which is why the NGCA website is - at least until until Jan 07 - still pretending that Hogarth's "Analysis" was published in 1754). "London Underground" was recorded on the platform at Clapham South tube station in 2002, but remained unpublished until released on Disinformation's "Sense Data and Perception" CD, put out by the record company Iris Light in 2005. "Sense Data and Perception" also included "Bexleyheath to Dartford" - a track recorded travelling through Lewisham railway station. "London Underground" is based on a conceptual and technical precedent established by "R&D Track 10" on Disinformation's "R&D2" CD, published by Ash International in 1997, which featured magnetic field recordings of Network South East and Eurostar trains. Writing in The Wire magazine, reviewer Keith Moline described these Disinformation tracks as being "fascinating" and as "like electron microscope images". Conceptually there is a play on words, as "London Underground" refers to both a transport network and to a cultural and social phenomenon. The full version of "Bexleyheath to Dartford" appears on the "Radio Territories" CD published to accompany the book (of the same name) edited by Erik Granly Jensen and Brandon LaBelle (Errant Bodies Press 2007). The book also contains a bio of Disinformation and a description of this project. "Bexleyheath to Dartford" is credited as appearing on the CD published with volume 10 issue 2 of the LMC's "Resonance" magazine (London Musicians Collective 2005), but in fact there was a mix up with the information and the track on the LMC CD is instead "London Underground". The magazine also features a 5 page article about Disinformation's work with radio and electricity. The LMC CD also features material by Susan Alcorn, P Sing Cho, John Butcher, Sylvia Hallett, Matt Wand, John Tilbury and Franz Joseph Haydn. These Disinformation tracks were formally submitted to London Underground Ltd's "Platform for Art" programme in January 2005, but remained unexhibited until they were set-up as sound installations at Event gallery, March 2006 (as part of the Node:London exhibition). Original duration 15 minutes. Headphones recommended. Art / noise group Disinformation first recorded VLF whistlers near Brighton in 1995. These were released on the "Ghost Shells" 12" EP by the record company Ash International in 1996. Further recordings of the same (and many related) phenomena were released on the Disinformation "R&D" and "R&D2" (Research and Development) CDs in 1996 and 1997. The Disinformation recordings were originally inspired by the Channel 4 TV documentary "Electric Skies", by Joe J. Carr's articles on "Radioscience Observation" in Shortwave Magazine, and then came about as an offshoot of Joe Banks participation in the Istochnik-Ariel "virtual" laser antenna experiment on board Space Station MIR, which was organised by the American amateur science group INSPIRE (Interactive NASA Space Physics Ionosphere Radio Experiments) in association with NASA and the Russian space agency IKI. These VLF whistler recordings have been used in dozens of Disinformation concerts and DJ sets, and have been exhibited as sound installations in an Ikon Gallery UK touring exhibition called "Kiss The Sky", at Art™ (Art.TM) Inverness, in the Sonar festival at CCCB Barcelona, at Hull Time Based Arts, and most recently at Kunstverein Bregenz, Austria, etc. These recordings were also edited down to create the (0.83 second long) "Theophany" sound installation, aka "The Voice of God", a parody of the work of the same name by composer John Tavener, which has been exhibited in over a dozen galleries, including Fabrica in Brighton, Burghley House Sculpture Garden and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. "Ghost Shells" was remixed by composer John Wall on his CD "Fractuur". "Ghost Shells" sounds appear in Disinformation remixes by musicians Mark van Hoen, RLW (Ralf Wehowsky), LOSD, Mark Van Hoen, SETI (Andrew Lagowski), Zbigniew Karkowski & Marc Behrens, Atom Heart and Kapotte Muziek, which appear on the "Antiphony" 2xCD, while remixes by Mechos and T:un[k] Systems (both pseudonyms of Peter Hodgkinson) appear on the "Al Jabr" CD compilation. Very similar ideas were "rediscovered" by The Kronos Quartet in 2002. The first public demonstrations of what we now refer to as VLF phenomena were presented by the Victorian electrical engineer William Preece, while the critic and art historian Douglas Kahn maintains that the first person to ever hear these phenomena was the inventor Alexander Graham Bell's assistant Thomas Watson. However, as documented in the original "Ghost Shells" sleevenotes, specific study of VLF whistlers goes back to investigations conducted during WW1 by the German physicist Heinrich Barkhausen.
