This made her determine whether they were prepared to engage the incoming workforce that was due in another 5-8 years. The inspiration came from her two children -- 5 and 10 at the time -- playing video games like Zoo Tycoon and using critical thinking to keep customers coming in and out of the zoo. She asked her team to find a business need that would lineup with a 3D learning game, the marriage of the two initiatives came together, and an online Verizon Wireless store was created. The online Verizon Wireless store consists of avatars that look like store managers, customers, and reps within the stores. Managers are faced with decisions they have to make if a customer comes in and asks questions. Based on the interaction, the situation may either be delegated to a rep or not; it's like a whole branching scenario. If the manager does an effective job, an online coach pops in and provides feedback based on how well they did. If they choose the wrong approach, the online coach will pop in and talk about the things they could have done differently. The top end of the gamer age group is about 36 and the target audience falls into that age range -- the average age of the target audience is 29-33. The leaders of these folks did take part in the game simulation so they could coach to it, with their average age being about 39. This age group did struggle with the game technology and even though they liked it, they needed more hands instructions on how to manipulate the game. The gamer sweet spot is the front-line representatives because they are a younger group, but the store managers were also very excited about the simulation. If this tool were used with the front-line reps to teach them sales skills, it is probably be the more effective approach to this motive of learning. When participating in the game, managers were taking the right path, but then going back and trialing the wrong path just to see what the reaction was. A lot of the feedback consisted of being able to do things like that within a safe environment. In this instance, it was taking some of the managers longer to complete because they were trying the various routes that were provided for them. (Less)

The Information Resources Management (IRM) College has become the largest college within NDU. Anything to do with information, information technology and the changes that are taking place in the world are NDU's primary focus. NDU is about developing information leaders. In the information age, people need to engage and react to each other differently. New technology raises complex questions. How do you validate that the website your looking at has valid information or how do you lead in an environment where all knowledge is possible? Information age leadership is different because of sheer number of information and communication resources available. The IRM college initially offered several certificate programs, but it become apparent that many students wanted to go on to earn a masters or doctorate degree. They were faced with the decision of setting up a degree program "in house" or exploring partnerships with universities. In the end, the IRM college choose to partner with universities. Syracuse University was the original partner with the National Defense University's IRM college. The relationship started in 1996 with a memorandum of agreement to take students that have finished a certificate program and allow them to complete a masters program at Syracuse with advanced standing. This successful partnership has yielded over 150 graduates. Forming robust partnerships with an array of universities is the key providing IRM students with the right education. When forming new partnerships, representatives from the IRM college will go visit the potential partner school or vice versa. They talk about the programs and curriculum and try to see where there is alignment. IRM students should graduate from IRM certificate programs prepared and ready to enter the partner colleges programs. Although Syracuse was the original partner, the IRM College has now formed over thirty partnership with schools across the country. Most colleges only accept a maximum of 6 transfer credits, but because the IRM has proven the quality of their program, IRM students are able to 9 to 15 credits to the partner schools. Any good partnership is about finding the overlap of interests. If one sides interests aren't satisfied, they can only bend over backwards for so long and the partnership doesn't flourish. Sometimes the IRM college's partnerships don't work and they can't find the mutual interest, but that's why selection is so important. Many colleges are hesitant to forge such a relationship with the workforce because of the negative stigma attached to "training", but as Dr. Childs points out, the line between training and education has begun to blur. All education should have objectives and goals. The IRM college has heard from their partner schools that the students that they provide them are very high quality and seasoned in their areas of expertise. Some schools, like Syracuse, have said they've needed to expand their curriculum to keep up with what the NDU students are learning. The mid career market is growing because so many professions call for life long learning and many schools have begun to embrace that fact. Reaching out can save money, expand awareness and most importantly, provide a richer learning experience for the students. (Less)
