Découverte alors qu'elle est encore adolescente par David Gilmour, guitariste du groupe Pink Floyd, elle publie en 1978 son premier 45 tours : Wuthering Heights, auquel collabore Ian Bairnson (membre des Alan Parsons Project) sur le solo de guitare qui conclut la chanson, et dont le texte est inspiré par le roman du même nom d'Emily Brontë (en français : Les Hauts de Hurlevent). C'est un succès immédiat en Grande-Bretagne, mais également dans de nombreux autres pays (dont la France). Succès d'autant plus remarquable que nous sommes alors en pleine période punk et Kate Bush se démarque déjà, avec ses airs romantiques et évaporés (présence théâtrale due à sa formation de danseuse classique et de mime avec Lindsay Kemp). Ce titre sera repris de nombreuses fois, dont en 1993 par le groupe de power metal Angra. Suivront les albums The Kick Inside et Lionheart 1978. Elle s'embarque en 1979 pour une tournée à travers l'Europe. Malgré le succès de cette tournée, ce sera l'unique fois où Kate Bush montera sur scène. L'année 1980 marque une étape décisive : elle fait construire son propre studio d'enregistrement. Devenue sa propre productrice, elle confirme son exigence artistique. La presse spécialisée le surnomme la « Sorcière du son [1]». Elle décroche un nouveau succès international avec le 45 tours Babooshka, qui contribuera à la popularité de l'album dont il est extrait, Never For Ever (1980). Elle revient avec The Dreaming (1982). Ce disque ne bénéficie pas d'un accueil à la hauteur de son ambition, mais il est souvent considéré par les admirateurs de Kate Bush comme son meilleur album. Kate Bush disparaît alors quelques années, pour mieux réapparaître avec l'album Hounds of Love (1985) (avec la collaboration du compositeur de musique de film Michael Kamen). Porté par des titres tels que Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love ou The Big Sky, c'est l'album de la consécration (critique et commerciale) planétaire : en effet, cette fois-ci, les États-Unis sont conquis. Surfant sur le succès de Hounds of Love, son duo avec Peter Gabriel sur la chanson Don't Give Up sur l'album So de 1986 lui permet de conquérir un nouveau public et elle reçoit début 1987 le prix de la meilleure interprète féminine de l'année en Grande-Bretagne. Son album The Red Shoes, porté par ses collaborations avec Prince, Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) et Eric Clapton, lui permettra d'entrer de nouveau dans les classements américains. Le 7 novembre 2001, Kate reçoit la récompense Q award pour l'ensemble de sa carrière. L'année suivante elle retrouve David Gilmour sur scène pour interpréter avec lui Comfortably Numb, extrait de The Wall de Pink Floyd. It is most recognized under the recording name Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. First created in Bulgaria in 1952 by Philip Koutev, "the father of Bulgarian concert folk music," the choir is now under the direction of Dora Hristova. Koutev also created and conducted the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic in 1951. Singers are chosen from country villages for the beauty and openness of their voices, and they undergo extensive training in the unique centuries' old singing style. Influenced by Bulgaria's Thracian, Ottoman and Byzantine history, their music is striking in its use of diaphonic singing and distinctive timbre, as well as its modal scales and dissonant harmonies (abundant second, seventh, and ninth intervals). Though the choir became widely known when the trend-setting English alternative record label 4AD released a pair of anthology albums in 1986 and 1988 with the now famous title Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, their recordings date as far back as 1957. The first pressing of the Voix Bulgares album was the result of fifteen years of work by Swiss ethnomusicologist and producer Marcel Cellier and was originally released in 1975 on his small Discs Cellier label. Ivo Watts-Russell (founder of 4AD) was introduced to the choir from a third or fourth generation audio cassette lent to him by Peter Murphy, singer from the band Bauhaus. He became thoroughly entranced by the music, and tracked down and licensed the recordings from Cellier. The group has since performed extensively around the world to wide acclaim and were honored with a Grammy Award in 1989 for their second album. Three prominent soloists of the group have also performed together as the Trio Bulgarka, notably on the Kate Bush albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. (Less)
