If Al wasn't doing this, he (More) In January 1940, Al formed the duo, "The Radio Stars with Two Guitars", with Jimmy Mesene. They entertained the troops in canteens, and appeared on stage. If Al wasn't doing this, he was broadcasting from the Cafe De Paris with Ken "Snakehips" Johnson and his West Indian Dance Orchestra. The Cafe De Paris, was known as ''The Safest Restuarant In London'' because it was way underground, away from the air-raids. Al recorded two tunes with the band in 1940 for HMV, they where ''It Was A Lover And His Lass'' and ''Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind'' which also featured the Henderson Twins. These tunes, taken from words by Shakespare, where not popular with supersticious people, as it was said that bad luck would come to anyone who meddled with the work of Shakespeare. Strangely enough, on 8th March 1941, a bomb went through the ceiling of the Cafe De Paris during an air-raid, and exploded right on the band stand. Ken Johnson, other members of the band and many diners where killed by the blast. Al didn't appear at the Cafe De Paris that night, and the news of Ken Johnson's death devastated him. Al recorded 8 sides with Jimmy Mesene for HMV. The last session they appeared at, was with Pianist Pat Dodd on 2nd April, 1941. Two tunes where recorded that day, ''Nicky The Greek Has Gone'' and the sadly prophetic "When That Man Is Dead and Gone", as this, was the last recording Al Bowlly ever made. I've always thought the guitar playing by Bowlly and Mesene was very much ahead of it's time. Listening to the guitar solo towards the end makes me think this. On April 16th 1941, the tennants in the flats at Dukes Court where Al Bowlly was living, where quickly making their way to the air-raid shelter, as a very heavy raid was said to be approaching. Al decided to stay at his flat. He'd been performing that night, and was tired. He lay in bed and decided to read a book. In the early hours of Thursday 17th April 1941, a landmine dropped outside Al's flat. He was killed instantly by the blast. Within three years of his death, all his available recordings for HMV where deleted from the catalogues. Today, Al Bowlly still has fans all over the world. Who knows what heights he may have reached if he'd have gone to the air-raid shelter that night. We will never know. What we do have, however, is a very large legacy of music that he left behind. In his 14 year recording career, he cut a staggering 1,070+ recordings, some of which have never been issued or re-issued. To me, Al Bowlly was a one off, I believe there will never be another vocalist that could match his style. His voice was unique. Whenever friends or relatives say to me ''who was Al Bowlly?'' I play them one of his records and quote this line from his immortal signature tune Brother, Can You Spare A Dime? - ''Say, Don't You Remember?
