Nolte Remembering The Basin Street Boys©2004JCMarion -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The origins of the Basin Street Boys go back to a musician that we are all familiar with. That person is Steve Gibson - yes the Steve Gibson who gained everlasting fame with The Red Caps. The singer - guitarist joined by Louis Dandridge, Joe Walls, Lloyd Mitchell, and Pods Hollinsworth. The group performed under a number of names including The Four Dots and The Esquiress. According to Marv Goldberg's article on The Red Caps, band leader Jean Calloway gave the quartet the name Basin Street Boys. This group had an odd history in the business as they recorded only one obscure side but were present on a number of motion pictures and animated shorts. One picture was released in 1938 and called "The Bronze Venus" (also known as "The Duke Is Tops") and starred Lena Horne. An interesting sidelight of this picture is the appearance of another pioneering Black vocal group The Cats & the Fiddle. Animated shorts that featured the musical talents of the original Basin Street Boys were "Clean Pastures" which also featured the voices of Fats Waller, Stepin Fetchit, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and believe it or not, Al Jolson ! Another was the unfortunately named "Swing Monkeys, Swing". A few years later, a long time friend and associate of Gibson named Ormond Wilson formed a vocal foursome in the mid nineteen forties. Along with Wilson in the group were Gene Price, Artie Waters, and Reuben Saunders. Wilson had remembered the name of the quartet from back in the thirties and changed their name from The Dreamers to The Basin Street Boys. By late in 1945 the group had signed a recording contract with Exclusive Records in Los Angeles, one of the very few Black owned independent record labels. In early 1946 their first effort was in a backup role accompanying singer Judy Carroll on the tunes "Changes" and "I Want To Love and Be Loved" on #215. Soon after the first recording featuring the group on its own was "Jumpin at the Jubilee" and "Nothing Ever Happens To Me" on #225. That summer however, the group found success at last. Ormond Wilson singing lead put over the song "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" on #225. Favorable airplay and word of mouth rather than heavy sales was the responsible factor that gave the group name recognition and box office appeal. The flip side was the jivey novelty "Voot Nay on the Vot Nay" owing a nod to Slim Gaillard. Five more sides for Exclusive followed in the next year and a half, but none made the impression that "Junkman" had. "This Is The End Of A Dream" on #229, "Josephine" / "I'm Gonna Write A Letter To My Baby" on #239, "I'll Get Along Somehow" on #247, "Summertime Gal" on #19x, and "Near You" / "You're Mine Forever" on 21x. The Basin Street Boys continued to perform in club dates during the late forties. From the strength of their recording of "Junkman" they got spots as mostly opening acts on the TOBA circuit of Black theaters in the Northeast and Midwest. By mid 1948 Mercury Records bought some unreleased masters the group had recorded for Exclusive and gave the group, now called Ormond Wilson & The Basin Street Boys, two records for the label during the last half of 1948. "If I Can't Have You" and "Come To Me" was released on Mercury #8106, and "Please Give My Heart A Break" and "To make A Mistake Is Human" on #8120. Neither recording made its mark on sales or airplay but the group continued to make personal appearances in the Northeast. In January of 1950 Leon Rene suspended operations of the Exclusive Records label. The label then sold off many of its master recordings including some by the Basin Street Boys, to other companies. The group as announced in trade publications was represented by the famed Jolly Joyce agency in Philadelphia. They continued to appear in area clubs but did not have further success on record and in early 1951 Ormond Wilson called it quits for the group and the Basin Street Boys were no more. They remain little more than a footnote to the history of the founding of the music that has dominated the world for more than a half century, but the memories and the songs remain. (Less)

Van Damme, whose real name is "Varengber" - was born in the autumn season of 1960 on October the 18th . Interestingly, in various Chinese arts and in the Chinese martial arts, the tiger is depicted as an equal rival of to the Chinese dragon. By comparison, Bruce Lee was born 20 years earlier November 27, 1940 the year of the Dragon. Lee, born in San Francisco but raised in Hong Kong was physical-minded as child. He was aggressive and as a youth frequently into fights. His appellate: "Dragon of Asia" fitted him well since he was: "vigorous, strong, self-assured, proud, direct, zealous, fiery, passionate, and decisive" the exact nature of the Dragon. In total contrast, Van Damme was a shy, timid child who hid behind his books and day-dream instead of super heroes. Jean-Claude was not strong, not athletic, and not confident, but an awkward introvert. Early childhood pictures confirm he was no tiger and did not have the traits of the tiger such as being "rebellious, colorful, powerful, passionate, daring, impulsive, vigorous, or stimulating". MIRACULOUS TRANSFORMATION: Van Damme's father enrolled his weak son into Shotokon karate school at age 10 shortly before turning 11. Shotokan is one of the five traditional karate styles and is based in large part on the ancient philosophy of Bushido and Zen. Van Damme was not initially eager for this training. He was terrified! The Shotokan school had no children karate classes. Instead, the young and underweight Van Damme had to train with far older 16-17 year old boys. To compensate, Van Damme worked furiously lifting weights to increase his strength. He practiced his karate moves at home relentlessly. His first few years of training produce little results other than his ability forge an iron will of determination. But, in 1976, at the age of 16, Jean-Claude made his full-contact in an event sanctioned by the European Karate Union (EKU) in Brussels. Van Damme produced a impressive fight record with 17 knock out while suffering only 1 loss in 1979 at the hands of the 2nd best karate fighter in the world, Patrick Teugels. Teugels in turn in 1980 lost to Van Damme who overpowered Teugels in under 2-minutes in a re-match at Van Damme's request in Brussels. A video which was formerly shown on aol.videos shows Van Damme literally pouncing at the bell on Teugels as if he were a lion leaping from a tree branch onto an unsuspecting prey. Teugels was completely overwhelmed under the fantastic power of Van Damme. In the wild, tigers can leap as high as 5 m (16 ft) and as far as 9--10 m (30--33 ft), making them one of the highest-jumping land mammals. Tigers have been reported to carry domestic livestock/cattle weighing 50 kg (110 lb) while they easily jumped over fences 2 m (6 ft 6 in) high with the dangling prey caught in the tight grip of their mouth. Van Damme developed his skinny body during his karate training and became an acclaimed body builder winning the "Mr. Belgium" bodybuilding title able to lift 166 kg on a bench. Van Damme took 5 years of ballet training as a teenager in addition to his karate classes. He was an incredible jumper. For a gig with the magazine "Muscle & Fitness" Van Damme was photographed non-stop over an hour and a half jumping out of the sand from 5 to 6 feet into the air for a total of 108 consecutive times - with every one of his spectacular jumps a perfect shot! He was a Tiger! Sheldon Lettich (director of several Van Damme movies) has stated that: "What has impressed me more than anything is the actual power that Van Damme projects in his kicks, can't really be seen on-screen, because a solid kick from Jean-Claude could literally kill. Director Sheldon relates he introduced Van Damme to Chuck Pfarrer (who eventually wrote "Hard Target"), but Chuck wanted JC to demonstrate the power of one of his kicks. Chuck had been an officer in the Navy SEALs and was n great physical condition. Chuck picked up a couple of exercise pads and held in front of his chest. JC advised Chuck to hold up a couple more pads, for a total of four. Chuck insisted that two would be just fine, but JC refused to kick him unless he used four. So Chuck grabbed two more pads and told JC to give him his best shot. Well, JC let loose with a kick that literally knocked Chuck across the room. It took Chuck a while to catch his breath afterwards, but he thanked JC for advising him to use those two additional pads! Likewise, a tiger can easily kill an adult male with one simple swing of its powerful paw. One kick from Van Damme has toppled most of his opponent outright.
