At the time I didn't know where to turn for help in writing a eulogy and I didn't know the steps to take to make sure I did a good job. I needed a good example of a eulogy speech and a sample eulogy would have really helped me out. I looked at all the free eulogy websites and they were pretty much worthless.
I considered many structures and outlines for his eulogy and I also reviewed many other eulogies before I made my decision on what I would say with my funeral speech. My dad was a veteran and a pretty tough guy so I didn't think a eulogy poem or eulogy song would be appropriate for him.
I didn't know how tough it was going to be. When you are writing a eulogy so many thoughts about your loved one race through your head. I concluded that I did not know how to write a eulogy and that I better come up with something fast since the funeral was the next day.
When it's your friend, it's not like writing a eulogy for someone you don't really know. If that was the case you could just say sweeping generalities and follow a few steps in writing a eulogy like many of the religious leaders do. That was not going to be good enough for my dad, mother or friend! I don't know what hit me that night in July of 2000 but I came up with a eulogy Idea that just poured out of me. I used it at my dad's funeral and the way I did it has since been praised all over the world. Many people told me I should make a keynote speech out of it.
I never did do that, but I did vow to help others in the same situation I was in. That's why I wrote "Instant Eulogies". I put all the standard ways to write a nice eulogy. I put in eulogy quotes and eulogy text samples and the book gives all kinds of ideas and help on writing a eulogy.
But the most special part is the format I included for my dad's eulogy. I actually included the entire text so you could copy the format exactly as I wrote it.
I do a memorial to him in my magazine every year and people from all over the world have written to me to tell me they are going to use this same format for their parents . . . Even BEFORE they die. Pop star Britney Spears is out of rehab. Her rep says she's left the southern California facility after successfully finishing the program. She's been there about a month, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and receiving other unknown treatment. Spears first checked herself in last month after a stint of hard partying and reportedly showing odd behavior like shaving her head.
The paternity battle over Anna Nicole Smith's daughter may be nearing its end. CNN reports a Bahamian judge is ordering a DNA test to determine Dannielynn's father. Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead, was reportedly thrilled when he heard the judges order and appeared optimistic. He along with Smith's boyfriend Howard K. Stern and Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband Prince Frederic von Anhalt are all claiming paternity. There's no indication of when the results will be revealed.
One photographer is recovering from injuries after actor Keanu Reeves allegedly hit him with his car. Authorities say Reeves' porche grazed the paparazzi man Monday night while he was pulling out of a parking spot. The man was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The extent of his injuries is unknown. The actor was not injured in the accident.
Comedian Bernie Mac is closing the curtain on his stand-up act. Mac says he's done performing on stage after 30 years of appearances. The comedian told David Letterman on CBS' "Late Show" he'll still work on films and other projects. Mac says he's now looking forward to enjoying his life a little bit. His new film "Pride" will be out in theaters Friday.
Actor Adam Sandler stepped in as host last night on "Late Show with David Letterman." Sandler was asked to fill in because Letterman was sick with a stomach virus yesterday. He was supposed to be a guest on the show. The actor asked his friend and co-star Don Cheadle to take his spot as the guest. The two star in a new film called "Reign Over Me"...which Sandler was originally invited on the "Late Show" to promote.

Plot:
Audrey Burke is reeling from the shock of the news that has just been delivered to her door by the local police: her warm and loving husband Brian, the father of their two young children, has been killed in a random act of violence. Once anchored by the love and comforts of their 11-year marriage, Audrey is now adrift. Impulsively, she turns to Jerry Sunborne, a down-and-out addict who has been her husband's close friend since childhood. Desperate to fill the painful void caused by her husband's death, Audrey invites Jerry to move into the room adjacent to their garage in the hope that he can help her and her children cope with their sudden loss. Jerry is facing a daily battle to stay off drugs, but in his unexpected role as surrogate parent and friend to Audrey's son and daughter he finds a core of inner resilience. As Jerry and Audrey navigate grief and denial, their fragile bonds are constantly tested. Working together, however, they discover the strength to move forward.
