Slide Guitar Lessons DVD Method 2: The Major Scale
So you've been playing some slide guitar for a little while, or maybe you purchased Slide Guitar Method 1: Open E Tuning, and now you're asking yourself, "What next?" Well, that's why I created Slide Guitar Method 2: The Major Scale.
Learning how to play slide guitar using Major Scales can be a little frustrating. You may already know the blues and pentatonic scales, but did you know that both of those scales are derived directly from the Major scale?
* Is the major scale used for blues style slide guitar?
* Does Warren Haynes or Derek Trucks use the Major Scale when playing slide guitar?
* How can my slide guitar playing benefit from learning the major scale?
All these questions and more will be answered in the DVD. If you're ready to take your slide guitar playing to a new level, then this is the DVD for you. I have included some of my best slide guitar tips on how to use the major scale in this DVD. I want you to start learning slide guitar now!
So what use is the Major Scale and why should I learn it?
Put quite simply, the major scale is what all music is based on. Every musical concept and melody comes directly from the major scale. By learning this scale when playing slide guitar, you will open up all different kinds of musical styles and sounds. Just look at Derek Trucks, his slide guitar playing utilizes many different scales. If you're looking to learn some of his slide guitar licks, the major scale is the place to start.
Would you like to know how to hear your slide guitar solos before you play them, or how about being able to hear different notes all over the fretboard, and know how they will sound in the context of a song?
Sounds unbelievable, huh? It is not. I will teach you about intervals, the key to opening up the entire fretboard of the guitar, and move you beyond box type scales. This is powerful information to know, and I will show you in the DVD how really simple it is. With just a little practice everyday, you will soon be on your way to mastering the sounds you can create with the slide guitar.
Does your DVD tell me how to get a good slide guitar tone?
Included with the DVD is an instant download that includes a 13 minute Quicktime video where I give you my tips on tone, from 15 years of live playing experience. All the things I talk about have been tried on stage, and will help you to get killer tone from your slide guitar. I talk about using small amps vs large amps, 2 overdrive pedals that will make your guitar sing, and much more!
How do I make my slide guitar playing more melodic?
In the DVD I show you how to start playing slide guitar like a singer. This will open up a new world of how you look at playing slide guitar. By applying these techniques, your playing will jump leaps and bounds above the rest and you will find your playing more melodic, and memorable.
What you will learn:
* Major Scale
* How to apply basic music theory by using intervals
* 5 Major scale patterns for soloing
* How to solo like a singer
* Exercises to build speed, technique, and articulation
* 6 must-know major scale slide guitar licks
* An entire solo
* And much more...
What you will receive:
* 80 minute Slide Guitar Lessons DVD
* 5 pages of tab in a PDF instant download
* Chord chart that contains 2 ways to play Major, Major 7th, Minor, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th, 9th, and 7#9 chords
* 2 backing tracks to play along with, including full band instrumentation
* Quicktime video of my tips on slide guitar setup, and how to get a killer tone! (Less) Channel: youtube

Ive watched many of the video contest submissions and there are a lot of very talented folks out there. I am honored just to be mixed in with the pack and getting a lot more attention than normal by doing so. Sure Id gladly take that Paul Gilbert pick too and frame it with my Paul Gilbert ticket stub! lol
I normally tune flat, but the contest was in natural so I tuned up to play in the right position. Because of using .010 - .052 guitar strings (Daddario XLs Light Top / Heavy Bottom) my finger tips are completely destroyed. ;)
What was really cool was finally seeing the real names of the chords (thanks again Julian), since I play by ear, I never knew the proper names. Well now I do! :)
By the way, if anyone wants the tab to my solo, Email me your email address and I'll send you a 2-page PDF of my chicken scratch! ;)
Im playing a left-handed IBANEZ RG470. I bought it used on Ebay for $200 and then slapped the same value in pickups by replacing the passives with EMG 81s. The bridge sucked for staying in tune so I cut out some hard wood and converted it to a fixed bridge.
(By removing the springs and claw and putting wood on both sides of the tremolo block)
Now I can do the double-stop bends. Im still getting used to the hard tail setup.
Wow!---Way harder to bend single notes (especially 1.5 steps) but worth it because of proper bending intonation. I love Ibanez tremolos, but they are a nightmare when left floating. lol
Thanks for watching the video and reading the description my friends!
Take care,

Description: John McGann's Rhythm Tune Up DVD For ALL Instrumentalists and Vocalists:

Playing with good time is fundamental to making good music, yet this critical aspect of musicianship is often ignored. This 50 min. DVD program can help all musicians on any instrument improve your feel for rhythm by practicing with a metronome. Even players who have been playing a long time can benefit from the material here.
John is a world-class class performer and composer on guitar, mandolin, and pedal steel. He plays standard guitar and mandolin in the DVD but the concepts are applicable to every instrument. John is a former National Mandolin Champion and a studio musician/recording artist who has performed and recorded with many of the leading lights of contemporary Celtic and Acoustic music. He teaches mandolin and guitar at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
The DVD covers ...
• Metronome Basics
• Playing on beats 1&3 vs 2&4
• 8th notes: straight vs swing 8ths
• Shuffle (12/8 time)
• 3/4 time: waltz & jazz waltz
• Celtic music: jig rhythm
• Funk: 16th note rhythms
• Practicing rhythm to melody transitions
• Playing on, ahead of, or behind the beat
• Subdividing the beat
• Metronome practice tips
Why do some musicians have incredible feel and flow? Yes, to some it's a natural gift but the rest of us need to work at it and this DVD shows the roadmap to that destination. We worked very hard on this program and are very proud of the result!
"...John McGann presents a set of sensible and easy-to-execute exercises
that will sharpen your rhythmic skills, regardless of your stylistic leanings.
... Unlike many pros that appear uncomfortable when thrust in front of a
camera and asked to explain their techniques, McGann comes across as
relaxed and lucid. He has the uncommon ability to distill tricky concepts
into easy-to-digest principles, and his playing on flat-top and Maccaferri style
guitars—as well as a perky F-style mandolin—is dynamic, toneful, and
swinging". - Andy Ellis, Guitar Player Magazine
