Description: 50th anniversary of Air Force mission remembered ... 11/30/2007 - DAYTON, Ohio (AFPN) -- On Nov. 27, 1957, at 6:59 a.m., six USAF pilots took off from Los Angeles and began what would be called (More) 50th anniversary of Air Force mission remembered ... 11/30/2007 - DAYTON, Ohio (AFPN) -- On Nov. 27, 1957, at 6:59 a.m., six USAF pilots took off from Los Angeles and began what would be called Operation Sun Run. On that day, three new transcontinental speed records were established, and the speed and range of the McDonnell RF-101C was showcased. Years later, this mission would be remembered not as a significant contribution to war, but as a significant peacetime achievement for a growing Air Force.
Almost to the exact minute, 50 years later, one of the pilots and several family members of those involved in Operation Sun Run gathered at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to present a painting commemorating the anniversary of this historic event. The painting, titled "Schrek's CIN MIN on the SUN-RUN" by aviation artist William S. Phillips, depicts then Capt. Ray Schrecengost's RF-101C, nicknamed "CIN MIN," flying above the clouds. The "CIN MIN" was named for the pilot's two daughters: Cindy and Mindy.
"I didn't know I would be a part of history," said Cindy Miller, during the unveiling ceremony. "I just thought I was the 'CIN' part of the name."
The painting brought back many memories for retired Lt. Col. Robert Burkhart, one of the pilots during the mission. "I was keyed up the night before the flight," said Colonel Burkhart who was a captain at the time. "I probably got less sleep than most nights."
Colonel Burkhart said he was only doing his duty and he didn't realize how significant Operation Sun Run would be. "I never thought it would be remembered 50 years later."
Ms. Miller, who was only 5 years old at the time, remembers the day very well. "Mom told me to look to the left because my father would be flying in soon. I remember dad landing and my sister, who was only 2 years old, being lifted up to the cockpit to say hi to him. I was so awestruck."
Ms. Miller's father, who retired from the Air Force as a colonel, was selected as lead pilot during Operation Sun Run. He established three new transcontinental speed records from Los Angeles to New York (beating John Glenn's record), from New York to Los Angeles and round trip. His record fell shortly thereafter when his time was bettered by other pilots on the Sun Run.
Colonel Schrecengost's brother, Sam, also in attendance at the ceremony, said it was very difficult to get anything out of Ray about the mission before he passed away. "My brother wasn't about awards or records," he said. "He was a team person. Getting everyone involved was his way of passing credit back."
The original RF-101C "CIN MIN" is on display in the Modern Flight Gallery at the museum. A giclee print of the painting will now be placed in front of the aircraft and next to the group's speed trophy.
"With this year being the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, we believe this donation is truly fitting as it depicts a significant event in Air Force history," said museum senior curator Terry Aitken during the unveiling ceremony. "It's also fitting to be displayed in the museum. Our mission is to be 'the keeper of their stories' and this painting truly enhances the story, the history and the significance of the people who were a part of Operation Sun Run."

Large crowds gathered around the Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards AFB to see the first landing of the Space Shuttle Columbia on April 14, 1981. I had just purchased a Sony HVC-2010 and SL-3000 and knew that if I shot from where the viewing area was the shuttle would be a speck, so, I decided to chance it and drove up to the first check point which was the air force -- the gate keeper was cool and told me I could park a few hundred feet in, which was closer than the viewing area, but I had to stay put so he could watch me. Wow, I was now on the base. I sat there with the engine still running and then, I just sped off heading north! I saw a sign that said "Rocket Road." That sounded good to me so I kept on going. Suddenly I came across large chrome "Ball" maybe it was a tracking station, and men in white uniforms came out and asked me what I was doing back there? I told them I was a newsman and was lost. One of them said "Well you're on the right road just keep going and you'll reach the gate onto the lake bed." The other guy said, "But you had better hurry up- they're closing up the road any minute." I drove slowly around the northeast side of the lake bed and to my surprise when I got to the lake bed gate no one was there and the gate was wide open! I sped onto the lake bed, it was just one hour before the shuttle was to land. I parked just south of the Italian news crew! A very cool shoot indeed! He grew up on a farm outside of Porterville during the great depression of the 1930s, in a small house with no plumbing or electricity he ran his "Ham" radio station off of a generator that he had made with a 1/2 hp Briggs&Stratton gas engine. After his graduation from Porterville Union High in 1937 he started school at Porterville Junior Collage, but that was cut short with the death of his father in 1938 when he had to go to work loading trucks for the Porterville Poultry Assn. to help suport the family. In Jan. of 1942 he quit his job at the poultry assn. and entered the U.S Navy to serve his country. After gaduating a "Aviation Chief Radio Technician" from the Naval school at Treasure Is. in San Francisco he was sent to NAS Kodiak Alaska where he was part of a crew in a PBY "Catalina" (in his later years he always remembered his time in Alaska and in the PBY fondly) Near the end of the war he was sent to the "Office of Research & Inventions, Special Devices Division" where he worked with the "Link Trainer" an early vertion of the flight simulator. When he was discharged from the Navy he returned to the central valley in California where he worked in several radio stations as anouncer, he also had a radio repair shop for a short time. In 1948 he decided to return to collage and in 1952 he gaduated from UCLA with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He then went to work for Bendix Aviation where in 1956 he asked a book keeper named Velma to go for a ride in his Aeronca Champ in the smoggy skies over L.A. , six months later they were married. After That they bought a home in Santa Barbera where they lived untill Dad took a job at Lawrenc Radiation Lab. in Livermore. Then in 1962 Terri, the first of his two children, was born in the hospital on the UC Berkley campus. Two years later in 1964 I came along. In the fall of 1964 Bills mother Lena died and he made the choice to leave the "Lab" and move back to Terra Bella to help his brother Frank with the family farm, Bill had also purchased in the '50s another 10 acers next to his mothers place that he wanted to plant with navel oranges. So he had a house built in the N/W corner of the 10 acers, parked his Aeronca next to it and brought the family down from Livermore. To be continued...... (Less) Channel: youtube

Bill was born on Jan. 6th 1919 in San Francisco, His mother Lena moved the family to Terra Bella Calif. a few years later when Bills' brother Frank was born.
He grew up on a farm outside of Porterville during the great depression of the 1930s, in a small house with no plumbing or electricity he ran his "Ham" radio station off of a generator that he had made with a 1/2 hp Briggs&Stratton gas engine.
After his graduation from Porterville Union High in 1937 he started school at Porterville Junior Collage, but that was cut short with the death of his father in 1938 when he had to go to work loading trucks for the Porterville Poultry Assn. to help suport the family.
In Jan. of 1942 he quit his job at the poultry assn. and entered the U.S Navy to serve his country. After gaduating a "Aviation Chief Radio Technician" from the Naval school at Treasure Is. in San Francisco he was sent to NAS Kodiak Alaska where he was part of a crew in a PBY "Catalina" (in his later years he always remembered his time in Alaska and in the PBY fondly) Near the end of the war he was sent to the "Office of Research & Inventions, Special Devices Division" where he worked with the "Link Trainer" an early vertion of the flight simulator.
When he was discharged from the Navy he returned to the central valley in California where he worked in several radio stations as anouncer, he also had a radio repair shop for a short time. In 1948 he decided to return to collage and in 1952 he gaduated from UCLA with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He then went to work for Bendix Aviation where in 1956 he asked a book keeper named Velma to go for a ride in his Aeronca Champ in the smoggy skies over L.A. , six months later they were married.
After That they bought a home in Santa Barbera where they lived untill Dad took a job at Lawrenc Radiation Lab. in Livermore. Then in 1962 Terri, the first of his two children, was born in the hospital on the UC Berkley campus. Two years later in 1964 I came along.
In the fall of 1964 Bills mother Lena died and he made the choice to leave the "Lab" and move back to Terra Bella to help his brother Frank with the family farm, Bill had also purchased in the '50s another 10 acers next to his mothers place that he wanted to plant with navel oranges. So he had a house built in the N/W corner of the 10 acers, parked his Aeronca next to it and brought the family down from Livermore.
