LUCKNOW: In a chilling reminder of the Imrana case, yet another young woman from Muzaffarnagar who allegedly fell victim to her father-in-law's sexual assault faces a bleak future after mullahs called for the annulment of her marriage.
On July 6, Salma (25), an unlettered mother of two kids, returned to her parental home in Islamnagar, Muzaffarnagar, after she was allegedly raped by her father-in-law over a period of six months. Salma's father, Raisuddin, filed a criminal complaint with the police under section 376-506 IPC in Ghaziabad, and the accused, Salma's father-in-law Akbar, has been jailed.
But in the process her four-year-old marriage to Azad has virtually ended after clerics ruled their reunion as 'haraam'.
"A woman who has had a sexual liaison with her husband's father cannot be his consort anymore. A divorce is a must," Mufti Maulana Imran, senior cleric from Darul Uloom Deoband, said on Monday after his view was sought. The prescribed punishment in the case, he maintained, was 'sangsar' or public stoning of the victim and the culprit until death.
In 2007, Imrana's case, which was broadly similar with the clerics declaring her marriage null and void after she was raped by her father-in-law, had led to a tsunami of criticism of the mullahs who have been treading cautiously on inter-personal issues ever since.
Maulana Khurshid Alam Qazmi, another mufti from Darul Uloom, when contacted by TOI, refused to discuss "a religious edict" on phone.
"In any case there are so many fatwas issued from Deoband that it's next to impossible for me to remember any details," he said.
But Mufti Imran was more forthright. "Such a relationship as in the particular case is totally immoral and can't be condoned," he told reporters on Monday.
"The couple must separate. They are free to marry any other man or woman on a later date but their nikah is void under Islam," he said.
The mufti also ruled that "children in this case (Salma has one two-year-old and a four-month-old son) must be looked after by the father who is entitled to their custody". The woman, the mufti clarified, "cannot be exonerated for such a thing cannot happen without her consent."
According to Raisuddin's FIR lodged on July 5, Akbar was sexually abusing Salma for the last six months. It says Akbar told her that if she opposed his overtures he would have her father and brother killed. He also used firearms to coerce her. "The husband is under the father's influence and can't protest.
Moreover, Akbar has promised him another wife," the FIR says. Salma, who was virtually under house arrest, spoke about her trauma to a visiting aunt and asked her to approach Raisuddin and save her. (Less) Channel: youtube

Abeer Hamza lived with her mother and father (Fakhriya Taha Muhasen, 34, and Qassim Hamza Raheem, 45, respectively) and their 3 other children, 7 year old daughter Hadeel Qassim Hamza, 13 year son Mohammed and his younger brother. Their house was situated approximately 200 metres away from a 6 manned U.S. traffic checkpoint, southwest of the village of Yusufiyah, which lies west of the larger township of Al-Mahmudiyah (in the coalition termed area "Triangle of Death").
According to her neighbours, Abeer spent most of her days at home as her parents would not allow her to go to school following security concerns. The American soldiers would often watch Abeer from their checkpoint, doing her chores and tending the garden. The neighbors had warned Abeer's father of this but he replied it was not a problem as she was just a small girl.
Abeer's brother Mohammed (who survived along with his younger brother, due to being at school at the time of the killings) recalls the soldiers often searched the house. And on one such occasion PFC Steven Dale Green ran his index finger down Abeer's cheek, which had terrified the 14 year old girl.
Abeer's mother told her relatives before the murders, that whenever she caught the soldiers staring at Abeer, they would give her the thumbs-up sign, point to her daughter and say "Very good, very good." I made this one for Louiesly's contest(which I recommend you compete in). And came up with a plot line and a couple of fan characters at the same time. Ok here it is:
This is supposed to be a continuation to the anime(which claims that Jerome drowns). In this continuation however he survived. He's still ashamed over his doings and acts as a secret hero and now and then takes a look around Ohu in secret. One day, around two years after Hougen died, a new threath is coming. It is a great dane almost identical to Hougen who leads an army against the paradise. The differences between him and Hougen is that he is younger, has no scars and still got his ears left. The story mostly centers around Jerome and eventually Kyoshiro and Tesshin(who later bumps in to him by accident. Jerome tells them to keep this secret). Here's the characters I've made up:
Clown, the bastard son of Hougen and Reika. He came to be when his mother was raped by you-know-who. When Reika was at travel with Hook she gave birth to him and his sister. She left them in a foster family however. Clown is rather macabre and laughts alot. He enjoys fighting but gets confused threw the story about his ways of right and wrong. The real reason why he is in Ohu is because he wants to find his mum and have some kinda revenge for leaving him and his sister. He's occasionaly being contacted by his fathers ghost who tells him to avenge him.
Seras: The daughter of Hougen and Reika and brother of Clown. She's quite the opposite of her brother and more like her mother. She's usually the one who stops Clown from going to far with things. Unlike Clown, who wants to have revenge upon their biological mother, she just wants to know why they were abanded.
Zira: The unknown daughter of Sniper. She wants revenge upon Gin and Ben for crippling and eventually killing her father. She's very beautyful, but very agressive. She kinda nudes males that gets to close(in kinda the same fashion as Hiro). She's one of Clowns followers and his best assasin.
Ryojaki: Son of Lector and nephew to Thunder. He's rather clumsy and comical at most times, but when he gets angry he becomes like a totaly another person. Then he got skills that matches Tesshin. He got a big crush on Zira which is mostly rejected or ignored. Pretty much like the others, he wants revenge. His hate is locked on to Jerome. But when he gets his life saved by him he switches side and goes with the Ohu army. He tries to talk his friend to it to, but he gets thrown out as a traitor.
Tsao, Jaki and Sepukku: The three sons of Kurojaki and brothers to Tesshin. When they were small pups, Wilson attacked and tried to kidnap them. Their mother managed to escape with everybody except for Tesshin. She later hears of Kurojakis death and blames Akame, Gin and most Wilson. She belives Tesshin is dead to. She trains her three other sons and eventually, many years later, sends them out to kill Gin, Akame and Wilson. She says that if they do not suceed, they aren't allowed to come home. Tsao is the biggest one. He is strong but easely fooled and rather dumb. He looks like a regular Koga dog except for a setting of Tora-ge stripes on his back. Jaki is the youngest one. He's the one who got most similarities with Kurojaki. He wants to be the dominant one of his brothers but have never beated Sepukku. He's quite arrognat and enjoys to compete. Sepukku is the middle one and the leader. He got a lot of similarities with Tesshin by appearence and is often misstaken for him. He's the most skilled and most cunning of his brothers and is usually the one to get them out of trouble. He's often very calm but usually gets annoyed by his brothers foolishness.

I made this one for Louiesly's contest(which I recommend you compete in). And came up with a plot line and a couple of fan characters at the same time. Ok here it is: This is supposed to be a continuation to the anime(which claims that Jerome drowns). In this continuation however he survived. He's still ashamed over his doings and acts as a secret hero and now and then takes a look around Ohu in secret. One day, around two years after Hougen died, a new threath is coming. It is a great dane almost identical to Hougen who leads an army against the paradise. The differences between him and Hougen is that he is younger, has no scars and still got his ears left. The story mostly centers around Jerome and eventually Kyoshiro and Tesshin(who later bumps in to him by accident. Jerome tells them to keep this secret). Here's the characters I've made up: Clown, the bastard son of Hougen and Reika. He came to be when his mother was raped by you-know-who. When Reika was at travel with Hook she gave birth to him and his sister. She left them in a foster family however. Clown is rather macabre and laughts alot. He enjoys fighting but gets confused threw the story about his ways of right and wrong. The real reason why he is in Ohu is because he wants to find his mum and have some kinda revenge for leaving him and his sister. He's occasionaly being contacted by his fathers ghost who tells him to avenge him. Seras: The daughter of Hougen and Reika and brother of Clown. She's quite the opposite of her brother and more like her mother. She's usually the one who stops Clown from going to far with things. Unlike Clown, who wants to have revenge upon their biological mother, she just wants to know why they were abanded. Zira: The unknown daughter of Sniper. She wants revenge upon Gin and Ben for crippling and eventually killing her father. She's very beautyful, but very agressive. She kinda nudes males that gets to close(in kinda the same fashion as Hiro). She's one of Clowns followers and his best assasin. Ryojaki: Son of Lector and nephew to Thunder. He's rather clumsy and comical at most times, but when he gets angry he becomes like a totaly another person. Then he got skills that matches Tesshin. He got a big crush on Zira which is mostly rejected or ignored. Pretty much like the others, he wants revenge. His hate is locked on to Jerome. But when he gets his life saved by him he switches side and goes with the Ohu army. He tries to talk his friend to it to, but he gets thrown out as a traitor. Tsao, Jaki and Sepukku: The three sons of Kurojaki and brothers to Tesshin. When they were small pups, Wilson attacked and tried to kidnap them. Their mother managed to escape with everybody except for Tesshin. She later hears of Kurojakis death and blames Akame, Gin and most Wilson. She belives Tesshin is dead to. She trains her three other sons and eventually, many years later, sends them out to kill Gin, Akame and Wilson. She says that if they do not suceed, they aren't allowed to come home. Tsao is the biggest one. He is strong but easely fooled and rather dumb. He looks like a regular Koga dog except for a setting of Tora-ge stripes on his back. Jaki is the youngest one. He's the one who got most similarities with Kurojaki. He wants to be the dominant one of his brothers but have never beated Sepukku. He's quite arrognat and enjoys to compete. Sepukku is the middle one and the leader. He got a lot of similarities with Tesshin by appearence and is often misstaken for him. He's the most skilled and most cunning of his brothers and is usually the one to get them out of trouble. He's often very calm but usually gets annoyed by his brothers foolishness. I have looked to mavericks from Ben Franklin to Patty Smith and from John Cage to Jimi Hendrix for infusing political creativity into my work. About 20 years ago, while learning to compose music and write songs, I drove cross-country with my then girlfriend (she was moving to LA to be the assistant editor on Dead Poets Society). It was a big trip for me so as I traveled I wrote down what I saw and thought. Back in Philadelphia, the birthplace of America, I turned my scribbling into a song I called The American.
By the fall of 1989 my interracial rock and roll band -- we looked like a united colors of Benetton ad -- was playing the song at local clubs and a few larger venues. For the most part people loved the song but a few times we were reminded by reactions that we were hitting a nerve. Like when our equipment van was slapped with "Race Mixers Must Die" stickers or the night that I was hit with rocks being hurled from a few of the 10,000 audience members at a concert.
Recently some friends suggested that I rerecord the song and make a video for You-tube. I believe the message of The American is just as relevant today as it was then. It is American to shake things up, point out injustices and question authority. That's what mavericks have been doing since the days of the Wild West. I'm proud of my small contribution to the political discourse at this time. I think everyone should see it. So help me spread the word in two ways:
