Such measurements are only to ensure that patrons can truly enjoy the night with no worries with regards to security at the event. This is also done in lieu with the increase in numbers of visitors this year, which is targeted at 24,000 people. "We had such a great response from music lovers, loyal fans to the event and also people who have heard about the event through friends. Sales of online tickets were great. In fact for Saturday, all of the tickets are sold out," explained Geikie. Those going for the show can expect a big turn out and also amazing performances by 20 bands from all around the world, most of which are second timers of third timers to the Rainforest World Music Festival. "The aim of the festival has always been and will always be the preservation and conservation of ethnic music and traditional musical instruments. As we went along the event also became an instrument to promote peace through rich culture and heritage. We are happy that the festival has grown bigger through the years. For next year, we plan to bring RWMF to another level, not in term of quantity but by adding fringe events," she said. Some of the events in discussion are tribal arts workshop and tribal arts forum. Such events are hoped to encourage visitors to stay longer and really be exposed to Sarawak's heritage so that they can truly experience what Sarawak has to offer. The Rainforest World Music Festival, organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board, kicks off today at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong untill Sunday where visitors will also have the opportunity to take part in the various workshops carried out throughout the three days. The stage performances that will feature various bands from all around the world will be held every evening starting from 7.30pm. Day passes are still available for purchase for Friday and Sunday while Saturday's passes are sold out. Those wishing to check availability can go online at www.ticketcharge.com.my or head on to the Visitor Information Centres in Kuching. Tickets are priced at RM80 for a one-day Adult Pass. I would like to be a gentle breeze, flying into your heart slightly. ----------------------------------- 龙仙娥 - 高腔龍仙娥 - 高腔 Xian-Er Long is an ethnic Miao Chinese singer. She was very lucky to be discovered by Dun Tan (谭盾), a famous Chinese contemporary classical composer who is known for his Grammy and Oscar-award winning scores for the movies Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. Dun Tan traveled to the Miao & Tujia Autonomous State of West Hunan Province in 1999. He happened to see a Song Party of the Miao people, where the Miao youth sang traditional love songs to each other. Xian-Er Long's Flying Songs and crystal clear voices attracted Dun Tan. He suddenly had an idea. Why not introduce this unpretending & pure voice to the world? He asked Xian-Er Long whether she was afraid to sing her songs at a bigger stage in front of many people. Xian-Er Long did not show any timidity. Instead, she asked, then who will sing with me? After Dun Tan came back to the U.S., he started to write his work entitled The Map: Rediscoverying the Genesis of Ethereal Music. This work is mainly based on musical elements of Miao. Xian-Er Long played an important role in this work. One might notice that three typical Miao musical instruments were used for accompany. The first one is Leaves (very cool, isn't it?). The second one is Ox-horn Pipa (牛角琴). The third one is Backbasket Drum (背篓鼓). In the lyrics, Xian-Er Long mentioned that Miao people in West Hunan have a tearful history. As I know, Miao, Tujia and Han people living in West Hunan revolted against the ethnic Manchu emperor of the Qing Dynasty 300 years ago. Since the revolt was led by the Miao King (Bayue Wu, 吴八月), many Miao people were killed in the war. The Qing court was one of the most corrupt (if not the most) governments in the Chinese history. Its officials were so avarice that they kept levying heavy taxes on the poor people. This was the reason of the rebellion. Now, Miao & Tujia people living in their autonomous states need not pay a penny to the central Chinese government. Xian-Er Long's hometown is Phenix County (Chinese pronunciation: Feng Huang Xian), which is a very beautiful town. A famous writer in the Chinese history, Congwen Shen (沈从文), is also an ethnic Miao Chinese born in Phenix County (凤凰县). ------------------------------ Referee Wang, Xianping's Comments: I am familiar with Long, Xian-Er. She was among the first group of singers who performed in the Folk Songs China, a TV program of the China Central Television (CCTV). She was recommended by my classmate, Dun Tan. He told me a story about Xian-Er. So I followed Dun Tan's suggestions to find Xian-Er. She is a Miao singer from Fenghuang County of West Hunan. She is an expert of Flying Song, which is a kind of antiphonal love songs of Miao. I invited her to perform in the Folk Songs China. Her performance was excellent. Her life is legendary. First, she is a Miao singer. Second, she was discovered by a renowned composer, who brought her to the U.S. to sing Miao songs at an internatinal stage. Then, she was supported and recommended by those famous composers and music producers to Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Today I am very happy to see her again. I want to express several of my hopes on her. I hope that she may discover traditional Miao songs in her hometown. Then rearrange them and transmit them to the next generation. Discovery, rearrangement, and transmission are very important for aboriginal(primitive) folk songs. I hope you to be a person that does these work. The groundbreaking album is a celebration of cultural fusion and a tribute to ethnic melodies. The 12-track recording is energetic and pulsates with Latin, Arabic and African rhythms. Klezmer revivalist Aaron Kula, a prolific composer, accordionist and founder of the 11-year-old KCO, balances tradition and innovation throughout the 50-minute recording. The music seems to bend time and timbre as Kula morphs exotic melodies into entirely different songs that push innovation to the extreme and ultimately into the 21st century. Kula worked on the orchestrations and compositions for nearly two years prior to recording them in the studio, always striving to balance tradition with innovation. Absolute rules have no place in "Beyond the Tribes." Simply put, the music defies common classification. One writer even described the KCO sound as "world music on steroids." Each song has its own back story and features different KCO members who contribute their own improvisational style to the orchestrations. The opening track called JewOrleans March, is a fusion of New Orleans jazz and a100-year-old Rumanian melody. Dos Mambo Freylachs superimposes a hyper drive Latin percussion section over fragments of an old Klezmer melody from Eastern Europe. Macedonian Tantz (dance) is a fusion composition that combines a bulgar (Slavic dance) rhythm with folk songs from Macedonia, resulting in a complex asymmetrical 7/8 meter. Teresa's Bulgar is a Romanian song that features the xylophone in a super fast improvised style. Vocalist Elena Correia provides sultry performances on the Spanish rendition of Eishishoken Nigun (melody) and on Miami Beach Rumba. Trumpeter Chaim Rubinov orchestrated two Latin dance-band songs on the CD including Miami Beach Rumba and Bet Hamikdash a la Salsa. The final track Wrong Note Freylach is an original composition for the full orchestra where Kula uses fragments of an old tune with an accompaniment that stresses chromatic chaos. The result is harmonic hysteria that is frenetic and funny. KCO features a 22-member orchestra includes 8 core soloists and a vocalist, with accomplished backgrounds in classical and jazz music. Featured instruments on the album include electric and acoustic violin, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, flügelhorn, flute, trombone, bass, drums, percussion, piano and accordion. Beyond the Tribes is an independent release produced by Kula and associate producer Terri Berns.
