In February 2005 some 36,200 homeless men, women, and children were sleeping each night in the New York City shelter system, including 14,900 children, 12,600 adult family members, and 8,700 single adults. Thousands more sleep on city streets, park benches, and subway trains. Some of the things you might find our team of youth doing in The Bronx is working in soup kitchens, working at a food bank, doing street evangelism, doing ESL tutoring, and working at a children's home. In Catacamas the team will be working alongside The Branch missionaries Roberto and Blanca Mondragon to build complete homes for the local families, working and spending time with children at Christian Relief Fund's Children's Home, and putting on a VBS for the local children. This will be the 7th year that The Branch has sent a summer team to Catacamas. The crowd filled nearly (More) The city's Asian residents quizzed candidates on issues ranging from social services to overcoming language barriers at Quincy's first bilingual candidates forum. The crowd filled nearly half filled of the North Quincy High School auditorium Saturday afternoon for the forum, in which candidates answered which consisted of answers to questions collected from surveys done by Quincy Asian Resources, Inc., a the nonprofit community agency. Everything about the forum, whose participants were which consisted of candidates for mayor, councilor at-large and Ward 6 councilor, was new to Angel Wong, a Vietnamese-born Chinese woman who came moved to Quincy 17 years ago. "I have never voted before because I know very little about elections," Wong said in her na tive Cantonese before the forum. "I am here to know almost everything: how the election works, who is running and how to vote." Even though the forum provided interpreters, the organizers had encouraged candidates to bring their own, according to the forum sponsors. Jennifer McCauley, councilor-at-large candi date, came with her own interpreter, Wai Ling Ho, who is originally from Hong Kong. As for the forum, McCauley said, "It is a great opportunity for the growing Asian community in Quincy. They should know what is going on." Two candidates, Victor Ng and Jimmy Liang, two Asian-American candidates, spoke in both Cantonese and English. Ng, a councilor-at-large candidate, addressed the crowd first in Cantonese and then in English, introducing introduced his parents who also attended. and commented, "They taught me how to live up to my name. They taught me to be a good man: to do your homework and to come home at night." said Ng. Liang, a councilor candidate in Ward 6, which has a large Asian population, fielded a question about a recent reduction in service at the Atlantic Neighborhood Center. "The first thing I would do is to work with the business community, because I am a business owner, to try to find funding for this project," he Liang said. Regarding cultural differences, the candidates were asked how the city could ease understanding and interaction among people of different backgrounds. "The city should encourage and participate in forums such as this. And we should continue to stress one of those common elements: education, education, education," said Councilor-at-large John Keenan, who is running for re-election. He also suggested that the city work with commu nity agencies to continue to provide services for the neighborhoods. In a question for mayoral candidates Tom Koch, the challenger, and William Phelan, the in cumbent, Asian parents wanted to know how the administration would improve the relationship between the schools and parents with limited En glish proficiency and how it would better educate parents about resources available. "We can improve the communication between the parents and schools in two ways: one by help ing parents with ESL classes -- for example, of fering classes at Ccity Hhall, such as we do; and al lowing QARI (Quincy Asian Resources) the opportuni ty to teach those classes to its members," said Phelan. Koch addressed the importance of participa tion of students, the teachersll,ll and the administrators of the system and the par ents. "We have to do more to better communicate with our school staff, our parents and grandpar ents," Koch he said. Evelyn Mei, a senior Quincy resident, said during the break that she was glad to see that the cultural difference issue had been brought up.
