After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul and their mother, Barbara. Rounding out the group was remaining brother Richard, who did not sing with the group but was assigned as road manager and advisor. Origins and early successes Originally inspired by the Everly Brothers and later the Beatles,[citation needed] The Cowsills' musical interest started while (their father) Bud Cowsill was stationed in Canton, Ohio in the late 1950s as a Navy recruiter. Bud and Barb encouraged Billy and Bob to take guitar lessons. The boys developed their musical talent and harmonized vocals and they gave performances at school church dances in Stark County, Ohio. The boys' first television appearance was on the "Gene Carroll Show" on WEWS in Cleveland. Bud retired from a long career in the US Navy to manage his children's career, along with his wife. The band drew increasing attention through the 1960s. In late 1965, the initial four members were hired as a regular act on Bannisters Wharf in Newport, where they would sing Beatles songs hour after hour. They also produced their first recordings, and released them on Mercury Records. Despite their appeal, the company passed on a record contract for reasons never specified. In 1966, the band was signed by MGM records, and Barbara who would become known to their fans affectionately as "Mini-Mom," due to her diminutive stature joined the group to record "The Rain, The Park and Other Things." Shortly thereafter the band was expanded yet again, to include siblings Susan and Paul. With the success of "The Rain...," the band quickly became a popular act in the U.S., and achieved significant airplay in England and other parts of Europe. "The Rain..." wound up reaching #2 on the Billboard charts, selling some three million copies in its first release. Bob Cowsill is quoted as follows on the band's early days: "Although Bill and I performed at a very young age, and Bill, myself, Barry and John did a lot of frat parties at Brown University and clubs in Newport ... the most memorable performance of what I would view as the precursor of what The Cowsills would be was at Kings Park in Newport (right at the foot of Halidon Hall) at some carnival. The family angle just evolved ... first Bill and me, then Bill me and Barry, then Bill, me, Barry and John, then Bill, me, Barry, John and Mom, then Bill, me, Barry, John, Mom and Paul, then later, me, Paul, John, Barry, Mom and Susan, then back to Bill, me, Barry and John (very briefly in the end) and then to me, Paul, John and Susan. Our first real break came when we were playing the MK Hotel in Newport (in the basement there) and a guy from the "Today Show" saw us and asked if we wanted to be on the "Today" show. We weren't famous or anything but we were young and we were related and we were quite good. So we went on "The Today show" (I doubt a tape exists of that but if it did it would be priceless to see) and someone from Mercury Records saw us, which ultimately led to our signing with that label and putting out "Most Of All" (a great "school's out" song that should have been our first hit in my opinion), which led to Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff. Mercury dropped us, but Artie and Steve had written "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" and we went in and recorded that song at A&R studios in New York and took the whole package to MGM, who decided wouldn't it just be terrific if their mother performed with them and, voila, the rest, as they say, is history." [edit] Television and The Cowsills The Cowsills also made many television appearances throughout the late 1960s and into the early 1970s, including on their own television special. They were approached at one point to play the roles of the children on the television series "The Partridge Family," a situation comedy inspired by their success. But they were not willing to have actress Shirley Jones play the role of their mother instead of their real mother, Barbara. The Cowsills were also known as spokespeople for the American Dairy Association, appearing in advertisements promoting milk. Also, during the first season of Love American Style (the 1969-1970), The Cowsills sang the theme song to the show.[citation needed] [edit] Breakups and reunions In 1971, following a series of personal squabbles among the family members, the Cowsills stopped playing together as a band. The individual members went on to various career attempts within and outside of the music industry, and some produced albums and performed from time to time, albeit not as the Cowsills during the remainder of the '70s and up through the majority of the following decade. One project in particular was the band Bridey Murphy, which was formed in the mid-'70s and featured Paul, Bill, Barry, and Waddy Wachtel, and performed to varying degrees of success. One notable project during this period occurred in 1978, when several of the Cowsills Paul, John, and Barry recorded an album entitled "Cocaine Drain."[1] The album was produced by Chuck Plotkin. However, due to difficulties between some of the family members over the final version of the album, it was shelved and has never been released. To this day, the surviving members of the band prefer not to talk about a release date for the album. Of the separate members, the one with the most notable degree of success has been Susan, who gained a significant degree of critical success as a member of The Continental Drifters, along with her husband, Russ Broussard. The success of this reunion led the Cowsills back into the recording studio, which resulted in the album, Global. This has also led to several reunions over the years in various forms, ranging from a few concerts to special feature performances at major events. Most notable of these events were "A Taste of Rhode Island in 2000," which featured all seven surviving Cowsills, and "A Family Thing 2", which was a benefit concert in 2004 for Bill's medical and financial difficulties at the time. This concert took place at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, and included an appearance by Shirley Jones, who introduced the band. Though she did not sing with them that night, immediately after her announcement, the Cowsills played "I Really Want To Know You", which is the one song that both The Cowsills and The Partridge Family had recorded. During this period, Barry also released a solo CD, As Is, with the proceeds going towards Bill's relief. Also in 2004, the Cowsills were asked to sing the National Anthem at Fenway Park and Susan's first solo release, "Just Believe It," was released in 2004 in Europe and 2005 in the U.S. John expanded his interests to include acting. While he still performs with The Cowsills, his primary occupation is that of a farmer in Oregon. Of the Cowsills, Bob has had his best success outside of the music industry. He currently works in the medical industry, helping to train hospital emergency departments to use a software package called EDITS (Emergency Department Information Tracking System) that manages data capture and billing issues associated with emergency room accountancy. In addition to providing training, Bob was part of the actual development and coding team for the software package. As of 2007, the surviving members of the Cowsills are touring as part of "The Original Idols Live!" show, which is hosted by Barry Williams, who had played Greg Brady on "The Brady Bunch. The funeral was the first real reunion of the family members since the band's breakup. [edit] Bud Bud, the father of the Cowsill children, died of leukemia in September, 1992, while living in Mexico. [edit] Barry Both Barry Cowsill and his sister Susan were living in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005. According to cowsill.com, Susan and her husband left New Orleans and were accounted for. However, most of her belongings at her New Orleans home were destroyed. It was reported that Barry was spotted at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on August 29, but was not heard from after leaving phone messages for his sister on September 1. He was believed to have been spotted in some tape footage taken by a TV news crew on or about September 5, although the person seen living on the street in the footage is not clearly resolved. A badly decomposed body recovered from the Chartres Street Wharf in New Orleans on December 28 was identified on January 4, 2006 as Barry. [2] The official cause of death is believed to be drowning; the New Orleans coroner found no signs of foul play. Barry is survived by his two daughters, one son and two grandsons, as well as a step-daughter and two step-granddaughters. Two memorial services were held for Barry. One was held on February 18, 2006 in his native Newport, Rhode Island at the Hotel Viking. The second was held on February 26, 2006 in New Orleans. [edit] Bill Bill Cowsill died on 17 February 2006 in Calgary, Alberta on the eve of brother Barry's Newport memorial service. The original plan was to have the induction occur in 2005 the 40th anniversary of the first recorded release by The Cowsills but these efforts were unsuccessful. The Committee, however, is still pressing forward with their efforts, and fans wishing to assist can do so by signing an on-line petition they have set up for this purpose. During their research, the Committee compiled the following facts about The Cowsills and their careers: The Cowsills hold more gold records than 115 of the 147 current Hall of Fame members inducted as performers. Billy played guitar on the song Right On recorded by Ike Turner. Susan is the youngest rock performer to have a Top Ten hit. John was part of the first American rock group to play in the Republic of China. The Cowsills had the first live album to feature a studio track when In Concert featured Hair. Hall of Famer Bob Marley used to cover Cowsill songs. The Guestbooks on robinrecords.com and cowsill.com have posts from all 50 states, 19 foreign countries, and six of the seven continents. The Cowsills were the first of only five album covers done for rock bands by famous cartoonist Jack Davis. Billy once recorded with a guitar borrowed from John Lennon. KFOR soldiers defend Serb enclaves against
attacks by Albanians
"Albanians smashed everything inside, including our communications center, made a big pile in front and set it on fire. Then they turned their attention to the adjacent Serb cemetery. They knocked over tombstones, dug up the coffins and scattered the bones in them", says Czech captain Jindrich Plescher - "I have never seen anything like it".....
"We were defending a Serb Orthodox church in the town of Podujevo against a mob of 500 Albanians, but there were too many for us," he recalled. "When they broke through the wall [around the church], we got orders to retreat.

"Sorry, we've been on our feet since last week," he said. "Our boys have been rounding up Serb families, pulling them out of cellars and out of burning houses -- saving their lives."
Czech and Slovak soldiers have been supporting KFOR's Brigade center -- a multinational unit consisting of Finnish, Swedish and Irish troops, located around the administrative center of Pristina -- since mobs of ethnic Albanians went on a rampage against Kosovo's Serb minority March 17.
"The Serbs are very happy to see Czech and Slovak troops. They see us as keepers of the peace," Plescher said.
For most of the week, they helped defend Serb enclaves in the towns of Lipljan, Plemetina, Babin Most, Caglavica and Gracanica. By March 21 they had consolidated around the village of Obilic, a Serb enclave northwest of Pristina, and were evacuating the remaining Serb inhabitants to military headquarters in the city. The Serb homes in the village were ransacked and burned, said unit commander Josef Kopecky.
In times of peace, the 500-strong Fourth Czech-Slovak KFOR battalion keeps the peace in an area of 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) in the northeast corner of the province, including 104 kilometers (65 miles) of borderland and a long stretch of the Belgrade-Pristina highway. The area was expanded by 179 square kilometers March 22 to include more ethnically mixed villages.
Now their mission is simply to protect Serbs from enraged mobs of ethnic Albanians.
"The residents have gone to war with each other using whatever they can -- iron bars, rifles, handguns and even grenades," Kopecky said March 19. "In Serbian enclaves, Kosovo Albanians are destroying property, burning houses, chasing people away and even lynching them. The Serbs are trying to defend themselves and we are trying to keep them apart."
No Czech or Slovak soldiers have been hurt, except for one Slovak who was hit on the head with a rock, Plescher said. "He was up on his feet again the next day. Please, please tell everyone back home that all our boys are alive and well."
The Czech government had planned to withdraw 100 troops from Kosovo by May 1. But the performance of the Czech soldiers in quelling the riots has made the government change its mind about downsizing the force in the province, Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla told reporters. (Less)

Blonde hair flying in the breeze, she turned to the roaring crowd, grinning from ear to ear, and gave a Tiger Woods fist pump.
``That was a tough one,'' Mann said after winning last Friday's preliminary heat at the Marshfield Fair.
A voice boomed from a loudspeaker announcing Mann would be one of the finalists for Friday night's $1,800 showdown for car-wrecking glory.
It won't be the first time in 11 years of competition she has made it to the ``feature,'' or the finals.
What it will be is another chance to win the elusive, and coveted, grand prize.
``I want to win the feature,'' Mann said. ``I want a trophy for winning the whole thing.''
That would make Mann the first woman to win a derby at the Marshfield Fair, and one of a small number to win anywhere in the country, except for those who drive in all-female competitions -- the powder puffs.
Mann has been the national lady demolition derby driver of the year.
She has driven compacts, sedans and 8-cylinder boats to their graves. She loves the speedy figure-8 races -- in which drivers have to negotiate a 4-way intersection in the middle of an oval track -- but has a losing record.
``I'm terrible at the figure 8s, but they're so fun to drive,'' Mann said.
Few women in the U.S. have been as consistent over the last 10 years.
From Maine to Kansas, to Ohio to New Hampshire, Mann has driven off with scores of trophies from races where she blew tires, destroyed radiators and crushed fenders on her way to the finals.
The unofficial ``Hit-tress'' of demolition derby, Mann has had nearly every experience a driver can have, except giving that fist pump and beaming victory smile for the grand prize as a champion.
After more than a decade on the demolition derby circuit with her husband Jim Mann, owner of Auto Gallery, a Brockton used-car dealership, Eileen has become one of the guys.
At every one of the hundreds of festivals, fairs and carnivals -- the demolition derby circuit for 50 years -- a collegial group of die-hard regulars spend a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of grand to buy a car that will be wrecked in 15 minutes.
Many of the racers are friends or family, and so the pre-race pit area is a flurry of activity in which cans of spray paint and radiator caps are borrowed and doors are wired shut.
It's also a locker room where the competitors exchange good-natured barbs.
New drivers are noticeable and welcome.
New female drivers are usually treated, consciously or not, with kid gloves.
On the track, guys ease up on the accelerator when they go in for a hit.
But not when it's Eileen.
``Jim and Eileen are great people,'' said Ken Weston, a fellow driver from Almeida's Used Cars & Parts in Plymouth. ``I'd love to see Eileen win, but she's got to come through us first.''
Mann, 39, a Randolph native who now lives in Taunton, rolled into the competitive demolition derby scene in 1996 after her brother, Brian Donohoe, 46, began driving at a few fairs.
Mann spray painted designs on her brother's and went to see how he did during a race in Foxboro.
The roar of the engines and sound of the crunching metal tingled her toes and widened her eyes.

Despite her brother telling her to ``stay away from that Jim Mann,'' Eileen and Jim have been together ever since.

Eileen has been a stay-at-home mom, and in between the dealership, derbies, raising two kids and work with a Maine boy's camp, the two have started a race of their own in Lempster, N.H., the Woodbooger Demolition Derby, that boasts a $2,500 first prize.
``It's been a lot of fun,'' Mann said. ``I have been all over the country; the people we've met have become our friends. It's not just a great time; it's become a way of life.'' (Less)

The term Celt, normally pronounced /kɛlt/ (see below), refers to a member of any of a number of peoples in Europe using the Celtic languages, which form a branch of Indo-European languages, as well as others whose language is unknown but where associated cultural traits such as Celtic art are found in archaeological evidence. Historical theories were developed that these factors were indicative of a common origin, but later theories of culture spreading to differing indigenous peoples have recently been supported by some genetic studies.
The Celts themselves had an intricate, indigenous polytheistic religion and distinctive culture, though the spread of the Roman Empire led to continental Celts adopting Roman culture. The eventual development of Celtic Christianity in Ireland and Britain brought an early medieval renaissance of Celtic art between 400 and 1200, only ended by the Norman Conquest of Ireland in the late 12th century. Antiquarian interest from the 17th century led to the term Celt being extended, and rising nationalism brought Celtic revivals from the 19th century in areas where the use of Celtic languages had continued.
Today, "Celtic" is often used to describe the languages and respective cultures of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany (see the Modern Celts article), but corresponds more accurately to the Celtic language family - of which six languages are spoken today (Manx and Cornish being recent revivals): Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx (Goidelic languages) and Welsh, Breton and Cornish (Brythonic languages).
Only in the last two decades of the twentieth century did multidisciplinary studies come to bear upon the history of the Celts. Disciplines such as ancient history, palaeolinguistics, archaeology, history of art, anthropology, population genetics, history of religion, ethnology, mythology and folklore studies must all be taken into consideration and their findings compared one with another, without falling into the fallacies of what John Collis (2003) has termed the "continuous circular argument" (Lorrio and Zapatero).
Boudica (also Boudicca, formerly better known as Boadicea) (d. 60/61) was a queen of the Brythonic Celtic Iceni people of Norfolk in Eastern Britain who led a major uprising of the tribes against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Upon the death of her husband Prasutagus, the Romans annexed his kingdom and brutally humiliated Boudica and her daughters, spurring her leadership of the revolt.
In 60 or 61, while governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was leading a campaign on the island of Anglesey in north Wales, Boudica led the Iceni, along with the Trinovantes and others, in a rebellion which destroyed the former Trinovantian capital and Roman colonia of Camulodunum (Colchester), and routed the Roman Legio IX Hispana under Quintus Petillius Cerialis. Boudica's army then burned to the ground the twenty-year-old settlement of Londinium (London) and destroyed Verulamium (St Albans), killing an estimated 70,000-80,000 people. Roman emperor Nero briefly considered withdrawing Roman forces from the island, but ultimately Boudica was defeated at the Battle of Watling Street by the heavily outnumbered forces of governor Suetonius.
The chronicles of these events, as recorded by the historians Tacitus[1] and Dio Cassius[2], were rediscovered during the Renaissance and led to a resurgence of Boudica's legendary fame during the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria was portrayed as her "namesake". The Lord warns Lehi to depart out of the land of Jerusalem, because he prophesieth unto the people concerning their iniquity and they seek to destroy his life. In one legend he had one son, Inti and two daughters, Mama Quilla and Pachamama. In this legend, he destroyed the people around Lake Titicaca with a Great Flood called Unu Pachakuti, saving two to bring civilization to the rest of the world, these two beings are Manco Capac, the son of Inti (sometimes taken as the son of Viracocha), which name means "splendid foundation", and Mama Ocllo, which means "mother fertility". These two founded the Inca civilization carrying a golden staff, called 'tapac-yauri'. In another legend, he fathered the first eight civilized human beings. When you have abundant food and careless ease, the least you could do is help same-sex couples achieve the access to same laws and opportunities as everybody else. It is too late for you to sign AB 43, but it is not too late for you to support the freedom to marry.

A correct harmonization of all the facts demonstrates that Jesus died near 3 p.m. that Wednesday afternoon, was entombed near sunset and was resurrected near sunset on Saturday, exactly three days and three nights later—just as He had stated. These are the facts, the correct biblical chronology that verifies the identity of Jesus Christ as the Son of God.
Many people still follow such practices, assuming that such activities honor God and are approved by Him. But, we should ask, how does God regard such extrabiblical customs? Consider God's instructions to those who would worship Him:
"Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.' You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
