Hamilton scored 20 of his 28 points after halftime and Jordan added 30 as the Washington Wizards rallied for a 94-87 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, who wasted a season-high 40 points from Iverson.
Iverson was recovering from elbow surgery when Philadelphia lost to the Wizards on November 3, making Wednesday the first meeting between the reigning Most Valuable Player and Jordan, who has won the award five times.
Iverson scored 27 points in the first half to Jordan's 20 as the 76ers took a 50-47 lead to the intermission. Both stars seemed to tire in the second half, but Washington found a second offensive option, and Philadelphia did not.
Hamilton scored 13 points in the third quarter, including 11 during a 19-6 run that helped the Wizards take control.
Philadelphia had a 58-51 lead with 8:55 left in the third when Jordan sank 1-of-2 free throws to begin the run. Hamilton had a dunk and, after a layup by Jordan, made consecutive baskets to give Washington a 60-58 lead with 5:48 to go.
Matt Harpring tied it with a jumper before Jordan completed a three-point play to give the Wizards the lead for good.
Hamilton gave Washington a 67-62 advantage on a 3-pointer with 1:45 to play, and rookie Brendan Haywood followed with a three-point play to extend the lead.
Hamilton made 11-of-20 shots and grabbed nine rebounds as Washington won for the second time in three games following an eight-game losing streak.
"The one thing I try to do is attack," he said. "I try to take my time and let the offense come to me. Playing with Michael, I sometimes forget that he's out there and I try to be the leader on the floor. I'm learning every game."
Jordan made just 11-of-17 shots but collected seven assists, six rebounds and a season-high five steals.
"I got in a good rhythm, the shots looked good and I had my legs underneath me," he said. "It's important to come out this way every night. The only way we'll turn this thing around is to give this effort every night. Some nights you'll have things go your way, but the effort should be there every single night."
"A 38-year-old is playing basketball the way it's supposed to be played," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said of Jordan. "Here's a guy who hasn't played in three years and he completely controlled the game. He got Hamilton looks, he guarded Aaron McKie. I can't image anyone taking three years off of anything and playing at a level like this guy is playing."
Washington's Tyronn Lue returned from a hand injury and did a solid job defending Iverson in the second half. He had nine points and seven assists in 24 minutes before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
"It was fun out there trying to deny (Iverson) the ball," he said. "You can't really stop him. So the best thing you can do is deny him the ball."
While with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Lue was handed the duty of defending Iverson in the NBA Finals.
Iverson made 15-of-31 shots overall -- just 5-of-13 in the second half -- and committed nine of Philadelphia's 21 turnovers.
Derrick Coleman scored 15 points and Harpring added 13 and nine rebounds for the 76ers, who have lost consecutive games after winning their first seven with Iverson in the lineup.
"It's disappointing because these are the teams we're supposed to beat," Iverson said. "We're supposed to jump on teams with losing records and never let them recover. We had them where we wanted them, then we let them regroup from it."
Iverson scored 17 points in the opening quarter and made 6-of-10 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers. He scored 10 points during a 14-2 run that gave the Sixers an 18-10 advantage less than six minutes into the game.
"I just got into a rhythm," he said. "I've been struggling since I came back. Tonight was like the first time I really felt good."
But Washington scored 13 of the next 18 points and pulled within 27-25 by the end of the first quarter.
Jordan singlehandedly kept it close before halftime, scoring the final 14 points of the second quarter for the Wizards. He made six free throws, three jumpers and a layup during the stretch. (Less)

Iverson's 55 Gives Sixers Game 1
In the illustious history of the Philadelphia 76ers, nobody -- not Wilt, not Dr. J, not Moses -- had an individual performance like Allen Iverson's against the New Orleans Hornets.
Iverson scored a team playoff-record 55 points as the 76ers defeated the Hornets, 98-90, in Game One of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
"He was on fire," Hornets coach Paul Silas said of Iverson, who fell eight points shy of Michael Jordan's NBA playoff record set exactly 17 years ago in a double-overtime loss at Boston. "Anytime a guy like that is on fire, there's very little you can do except to take the ball out of his hands. It's right up there with Michael's 63. He just had a great night."
The NBA saw some superlative performances over the opening weekend of the playoffs, but the best came in the last game.
Iverson shot 21-of-32, including 9-of-11 in the fourth quarter, and 10-of-11 from the line to surpass his own playoff record of 54 points set in a 97-92 triumph over Toronto in Game 2 of the 2001 conference semifinals.
"I knew he'd come out with fire in his eyes," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "(Dirk) Nowitzki goes for 46 and Tracy (McGrady) goes for 43, Kobe (Bryant) went for 39. So I figured he was motivated a little."
"I just caught a rhythm," Iverson said. "I got in one of those rhythms where the basket looks like an ocean and I was just throwing rocks in it. My teammates did a superb job just getting me the ball in the spots where I need them, and every time I came up free, the ball was there."
It was the sixth-highest total in NBA playoff history and three points shy of Iverson's personal best.
"This was his best ever, by far," Brown said. "And he's had some pretty darn good games."
With his teammates almost entirely shut down by the Hornets, Iverson stepped up time and again. After George Lynch nailed a baseline jumper to get New Orleans within 86-84 with 4:05 remaining, Iverson countered with back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Sixers hang on.
New Orleans got within 94-90 on a pair of free throws by Jamal Mashburn with 52 seconds left, but Iverson -- who scored 20 points in the final 12 minutes -- responded 15 seconds later with an arching scoop shot over P.J. Brown.
Eric Snow capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play.
Snow added 15 points and 10 assists and Aaron McKie scored 12 points for the Sixers, who lost two of three meetings with the Hornets during the season, including a 94-89 defeat a week ago.
"This is the same team," Snow said. "But you have to remember, we didn't have Keith Van Horn or Derrick Coleman that game, and they absolutely killed us on the rebounding. That is our top two leading rebounders that didn't even play. So I think that they made up for a lot of that."
New Orleans again outrebounded Philadelphia, 37-32, but the Sixers scored more second-chance points, 12-7.
Mashburn scored 28 points to pace New Orleans, which fell behind for good, 70-68, on a 3-pointer by Iverson that closed the third quarter.
Iverson scored 13 points in the opening period as the Sixers jumped to a 27-20 lead.
New Orleans took its biggest lead, 36-30, on a pair of free throws by David Wesley with 6:45 left in the second quarter before Philadelphia tightened its defense and went back on top, 49-44, entering the break. Iverson had 25 points at halftime.
"I felt good in the beginning especially in the first quarter," Iverson said. "I hit some free throws and my free-throw shooting felt good. A lot of times when my free throws are good, I feel like my jumper can get on early in the game. But in the second half, the third and fourth quarters, that is when I knew I was in a rhythm."
The Sixers had 24 assists and committed 15 turnovers, while the Hornets had 12 assists and 24 giveaways, which Philadelphia converted into 24 points.
"We had opportunities to go ahead and we turned the ball over, and that's what hurt us," Lynch said. "They are a good team and you cannot turn the ball over against them. They are going to scrap. This series is going to come down to who is going to get on the floor more and whoever leaves it on the floor, leaves some skin, leaves some blood, that's who is going to win."
"We were not very good tonight and we have to be better in order to win," Silas added. "If we had taken care of the ball, we really would have done better."
"I think if I'm a fan, sitting there watching what he did, I would be pretty excited," Brown said of Iverson. "It was pretty neat. He took it upon himself and did extraordinary things. I don't know how it could get much better than that.
"(But) we can't do it with expecting him to get 51. We have to do it as a team. In fairness to him, we have to have people step up and accept that responsibility." (Less)

I'm learning every game." Jordan made just 11-of-17 shots but collected seven assists, six rebounds and a season-high five steals. "I got in a good rhythm, the shots looked good and I had my legs underneath me," he said. "It's important to come out this way every night. The only way we'll turn this thing around is to give this effort every night. Some nights you'll have things go your way, but the effort should be there every single night." "A 38-year-old is playing basketball the way it's supposed to be played," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said of Jordan. "Here's a guy who hasn't played in three years and he completely controlled the game. He got Hamilton looks, he guarded Aaron McKie. I can't image anyone taking three years off of anything and playing at a level like this guy is playing." Washington's Tyronn Lue returned from a hand injury and did a solid job defending Iverson in the second half. He had nine points and seven assists in 24 minutes before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. "It was fun out there trying to deny (Iverson) the ball," he said. "You can't really stop him. So the best thing you can do is deny him the ball." While with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Lue was handed the duty of defending Iverson in the NBA Finals. We had them where we wanted them, then we let them regroup from it." Iverson scored 17 points in the opening quarter and made 6-of-10 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers. He scored 10 points during a 14-2 run that gave the Sixers an 18-10 advantage less than six minutes into the game. "I just got into a rhythm," he said. "I've been struggling since I came back. Tonight was like the first time I really felt good." But Washington scored 13 of the next 18 points and pulled within 27-25 by the end of the first quarter. Jordan singlehandedly kept it close before halftime, scoring the final 14 points of the second quarter for the Wizards. He made six free throws, three jumpers and a layup during the stretch. (Less)

The 76ers had not beaten the Bulls since December 8th, 1993, a span that included seven home games. They have had three coaching changes and four 50-loss seasons since that victory, while the Bulls have averaged 63 wins and have won the last two NBA titles. Derrick Coleman scored 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter, when the Sixers took control. Iverson, who finished two points shy of his season high, added nine in the final period, when the Sixers fought off a rally by the Bulls and opened a 19-point lead. Philadelphia has won four of its last six. "This game will give us a little bit more confidence," Iverson said. "It gives us confidence because if we can beat the world champions, there shouldn't be any reason why we shouldn't feel we can beat every team we play against. Some nights we're going to have off nights shooting the ball but if we play defense, we'll be in every game." Scottie Pippen scored 22 points -- two in the second half -- and Michael Jordan added 20 for the Bulls, who were coming off a convincing home win over Seattle and lost for the first time in three games since Pippen's return. Chicago dropped to 7-11 on the road. "When you go on the road, you got to take care of the ball, especially against teams that are trying to make a name for themselves," Jordan said. "I, myself, made a lot of mistakes out there and I certainly can take the blame for this one." Playing in front of a record crowd of 21,104 at the CoreStates Center, the Sixers overcame Pippen's 20 first-half points for a 52-51 lead. Iverson scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. A layup by Randy Brown pulled the Bulls within 64-61 with 6:18 left in the third quarter before the 76ers went on a 13-3 run. Rookie Tim Thomas had a three-pointer and Coleman had a jumper and layup before a jumper by Clarence Weatherspoon made it 77-64 with 51 seconds to go. "We didn't take care of the basketball in the fourth," Jordan said. "Little stupid mistakes cost us the game. We're a better basketball team than that. You have to say a game like this is a learning experience for us. We didn't take care of the ball, especially when we got it down to within three." "What stood out is when they scored nine straight to start the fourth quarter, we just dug in," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "Early on (in the season), we tried to win as individuals. Tonight it seemed, when they made a run at us, we continued to be a team and played the right way." Jordan and Pippen were limited to a combined 4-of-17 from the field in the second half. Pippen was just 1-of-6 as Thomas did a credible job on the perennial All-Star. "The second half we had to play a perimeter offense," Pippen said. "We settled for that instead of being smarter and trying to go inside. My conditioning is not at the point to where I should settle for outside jump shots." Before we had Theo and before Derrick's presence, we weren't a good defensive team, so we couldn't withstand runs by other teams and that was because we couldn't get any stops," Coleman said. "Now, we can get stops. That's made us a better team." "We can't say, 'This is a great thing because we beat the Bulls,'" Ratliff said. "We've got another game coming up and we have to play just as well against those guys. We're not going to go all out and celebrate or have a party or things of that nature just because we beat the Bulls." Dennis Rodman grabbed 20 rebounds for the Bulls, who also shot 46 percent (38-of-83) and held a 51-39 rebounding edge. But Chicago committed 29 fouls and 21 turnovers. (Less)
