Mrs. Robinson dies at age 73
By Jerry Tallmer
There are only six of us left on this earth who remember a movie called "Don't Bother to Knock." It was released in 1952 -- script by Daniel Taradash and Charlotte Armstrong (from her novel), direction by Roy Ward Baker -- and it was the flick in which Marilyn Monroe, as a sub-psychotic baby sitter, gave the best performance of her life, or, if you like, second best to what she did in "The Misfits."
"Don't Bother to Knock" is set in a New York hotel, where a husband and wife from squaresville need somebody to keep an eye for a few hours on their young daughter, Bunny, while they, the hicks, attend a banquet of some sort. A slightly off-center hotel elevator operator (Elisha Cook, Jr.) has just the answer, his teenage niece, Nell — and they go for it!
Nell of course is quite a bit farther off center. After fingering all the perfume and soaps and jewelry in the place, she stares out the window at a man in another room of the same hotel. On the house phone they strike up a conversation. He (Richard Widmark) is an airline pilot who has just had a fight with his girlfriend, the thrush -- the cabaret singer -- in the bar and lounge downstairs.
This glamorous young woman is played by an actress who in that year must have been 20 years old (Monroe was 25) and in the very first of some 65 motion pictures she was in from 1952 to 2002. Her name was Anne Bancroft. At the end of the picture, when the baby sitter is being escorted off the premises, Monroe looks at Widmark and Bancroft, who have reunited, and murmurs, with wonder: "People who love one another."
In 1952, Bancroft's performance would have been six years before "Two for the Seesaw" on Broadway, which is where her fire and talent and sexuality first hit most of us between the eyes; would have been seven years before "The Miracle Worker" on Broadway, which deepened and strengthened the foregoing; ten years before the movie of "The Miracle Worker"; and 15 years before the film that forever more would imprint her upon the world as Mrs. Robinson, sneering seducer of a kid who will fumble his way out of bed with her and into bed with her daughter.
But before "The Graduate" -- three years before "The Graduate" -- there was a movie that those six of us left on earth who saw this one, too, will surely never forget. I first saw it that summer of '64 in London -- at a screening also attended, as it happens, by Eli Walach and Anne Jackson, which complicates things for people who say "Anne Jackson" when they mean "Anne Bancroft," or "Anne Bancroft" when they mean "Anne Jackson."
"The Pumpkin Eater," script by Harold Pinter from the novel by Penelope Mortimer, direction by Jack Clayton -- is set mostly in London, and it is in fact smack in the middle of Harrods department store in the middle of London that Jo Armitage (Bancroft), simply gorgeous in a big side-of-the-head picture hat, has a full-blown nervous breakdown because her husband Jake (Peter Finch, the one and only) is carrying on with the reckless, nerveless young Philpott (Maggie Smith, the other and only) while she, Jo, gives tender loving birth to child after child after child.
The moment in Harrods is almost topped by Bancroft's throwing a cup of coffee or tea or soup or something all over the obnoxious businessman (James Mason) who's trying to move in on Peter Finch's lost ground. If you need one more big talent, it's Sir Cedrick Hardwicke as Bancroft's father.
In 1994 she was nominated for an Emmy for her TV performance as the 99-year-old heroine of Allan Gurganus's "Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All." Gurganus was on the set daily in a small part. "She was fantastic, totally professional," he says. "With the energy of a 26-year-old" -- though she was then 63. "Everybody, even the extras, felt easy talking with her. She bought tremendous stature to the role, and obviously had read all 800 pages of the book."
Each of us has our own Anne Bancroft. The Pumpkin Eater's was mine and will remain mine. William Gibson, who wrote "Two for the Seesaw" and "The Miracle Worker" and "The Seesaw Log," that 1959 memoir about, among other things, how Broadway newcomer Bancroft held her own against the royal aloofness of Henry Fonda, probably has two or three Bancrofts in his head, or more.
Anna Louisa Maria Italiano was born in the Bronx on September 17, 1931. She died on June 6, 2005, in Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York City. Mel Brooks has lost a star, and so have we. (Less)

One wall divides us; but, indeed, the break between sound and mind is vast, casting us adrift, along our separate ways. I lie in bed, prostrated, alone, seeking the quiet peace which only slumber provides; she wails in wild anguish, in a desperate, vain attempt to find salvation in a wicked world. We are floating down different paths, to parts unknown.
There is a sudden noise in the other room. Was it a gunshot, or the mother's calloused hand striking the soft flesh of her only child? A high, pitched voice pierces the walls; its banshee tongue is distinctly Toi Shan, mumbling and stumbling through the harp of Cantonese. I don't understand the words; but the mother's anger flows like the spirits that haunt this place. No one can rest here.
Yet, there is a moment of silence, a brief respite in the litany of violence, before, once again, this innocent babe begins to cry. The younger longs to succor; the older aims to strike, again, and again. The rhythm of distemper throbs, rocking to a rage that reverberates through these thin walls. Its turbulence cannot be contained by the peace that I lovingly desire. Their symphony continues to play; I wish this nightmare to be taken away.
The spirits are moving. Footsteps in the hallway, hard and fast, approach my front door, growing louder and louder until, suddenly, they stop. I want to scream; a creaking door groans quickly, cutting me off, and a new demon enters the room. It barks virulently as a dog assesses the stranger before it. The enemy is in sight and from hell comes his wrath. His voice is hoarse; his ejaculations, consumed with contempt, hiss and spit that toxic acid that poisons and burns souls alive. His daughter cries, and cowers at the touch. I think I have had enough.
Still, there is an allure to this netherworld, where evil shatters the mind, dashing hope against the walls, sending its million fiery fragments into the black sky. I hear the mother, the daughter and the father in the distance, their music seducing others to try, to extinguish a kindred spirit, to consume the virgin alive. Oh, my soul has already trod this slippery road. I was saved from those raging seas, leaving the past and these people as simple memories. Now, I sleep in peace. (Less)

When king Aegeus of Athens wanted children he went to Delphi to consult the oracle about it, but did not understand the answer. He then went to the wise king Pittheus in Troezen, who instead of telling Aegeus what the answer meant gave him his daughter Aethra. She had been seduced by Poseidon the same night, and the child, Theseus, she had was therefore considered both Aegeus and Poseidons son. Aegeus hid his sword and sandals under a rock, and said that when Theseus was strong enough to lift the rock, he would bring the things to his father for recognition. When Theseus was only 16 he lifted the rock and headed off for Athens. On his way he went through many adventures. He killed the bandit Periphetes who would kill travelers with his club, and from thereon the club was his constant companion. He then met Sinis, another scoundrel who would tie travelers to two trees that he had bent down. He then let go of the trees, and the unfortunate would be torn apart. Theseus punished Sinis with the same way, and according to one version this deed was the foundation of the Isthmian games. He then killed the wild boar of Cromyon, and headed off for the "evil stairs" at Gerania. They were rocks near the sea, and a bandit there, Sciron, would ask travelers to wash his feet. Sciron would then kick them into the sea where a turtle ate the victim. Theseus killed Scircon with the same brutal way. Theseus then reached Eleusis where the brute Cercyon would challenge all the travelers to fight him. Noone had made it past him alive, but Theseus lifted him up in the air and crushed him against the ground. Next bandit was Procrustes, also called Damastes. He had a bed where he would put travelers to measure them. If they were too tall he would cut off their feet, and if they were too short he would stretch them. By defeating him, Theseus had cleared the road from Troize, over Corinth and Isthmus to Eleusis and Athens from bandits. On his arrival in Athens noone knew who he was, but the kings new wife, the witch Medea, sensed a threat fromTheseus. She told king Aegeus that the young man was conspiring against him, and the king sent Theseus away to catch the bull from Crete that was roaming around in Marathon. On his way to Marathon, Theseus stayed in the house of an old lady, who took care of him the best she could. After killing the bull, Theseus went to see her on his way back, but found her dead. He buried her and headed back to Athens. Medea now tried to poison him. She gave a cup of poisoned wine to king Aegeus who offered it to Theseus. The hero then presented Aegeus with his sword. Aegeus recognized it, and pushed the cup out of Theseus hand before he could drink. Medea was chased out of Athens. The next adventure, a certainly the most famous, was the killing of the Minotaur. Athens would send seven young boys and seven young girls to king Minos in Crete as a tribute every nine years. There, they would be sacrificed to the half man half bull Minotaur that lived in the labyrinth of Knossos. Theseus set off for Crete as one of the boys to end this monstrosity, promising his father that his ships would bear white sails if he made it. Because of the nature of the trip, the Athenian ships carrying the fourteen children would have black sails of mourning. It was the third expedition. The Cretan king Minos daughter Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and helped him by giving him a nest of thread to tie to the entrance of the labyrinth in order to find his way back. When Theseus had killed the Minotaur, he fled Crete together with Ariadne. They first landed on the holy island of Delos, where a party was held. The young girls danced, and this dance would be held there to the honour of Apollo later on. After this they went to Naxos where Ariadne was left behind after falling asleep. Because of the joy and celebration after this adventure, Theseus forgot to change the sails. When his father Aegeus sat on a rock looking for the ships, and saw the black sails approaching, he jumped from the rock into the sea, which got the name the Aegean Sea. (Less)

from the KayvonTV.com Clip of the Day series.
Wedding Crashers is a 2005 comedy film, directed by David Dobkin. The film stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, with Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, Jane Seymour, and Bradley Cooper. The film debuted in North American theaters on July 15, 2005 and the DVD version was released on January 3, 2006.
* Owen Wilson as John Beckwith - One half of the wedding crasher duo. John is a bachelor attorney riding high on his success with Jeremy, but unlike his friend, seems to be developing a conscience after taking advantage of so many women.
* Vince Vaughn as Jeremy Grey - The other half of the wedding crasher duo, and an unrepentant womanizer. He remains a loyal friend to John, even sticking it out over one tumultuous weekend at the Clearys'.
* Christopher Walken as Treasury Secretary William Cleary - A big sailing fan and oblivious head of the dysfunctional Cleary household. He is generally affable man, but punishes anyone who insults his wife or his three daughters. He is considered a frontrunner for the U.S. Presidency.
* Rachel McAdams as Claire Cleary - Middle daughter of William Cleary and the love interest of John. A sweet girl and full-time environmental activist. Claire does not easily accept clichés.
* Isla Fisher as Gloria Cleary - Youngest daughter of William Cleary. A mentally unstable nymphomaniac who falsely claims that she lost her virginity to Jeremy. She is obsessed with Jeremy and forces increasingly kinky sex acts on him, whether he consents or not. He calls her "a stage five clinger" but ultimately falls in love with her.
* Jane Seymour as Kathleen "Kitty Kat" Cleary - The alcoholic sex lioness wife of William and mother of Christina, Claire, Gloria, and Todd. She is known for often seducing young bachelors, as she attempts to do so with John.
* Keir O'Donnell as Todd Cleary - The reclusive, hyper-sensitive son of William and Kathleen. He is an extremely angry homosexual artist. He is also convinced Jeremy "had a moment" with him at the dinner table, and tries to seduce him and play tummysticks.
* Bradley Cooper as Zachary "Sack" Lodge - Claire's sociopathic, testosterone-fueled, preppy, violent boyfriend who is obsessed with winning at any cost. Though he cheats regularly on Claire and is only interested in environmentalism so he can sleep with young activists, he is threatened by John and Jeremy.
* Henry Gibson as Father O'Neil, the priest officiating at several weddings.
* Jennifer Alden as Christina Cleary - Eldest daughter of William Cleary.

Theseus was the greatest hero of Athens.
(Less)

Everybody in Ware seems to have a void to fill, they just use different means. Steve Reynolds had been filling his void with drugs, but a vision of God has now inspired him to "recruit people into the Lord's army." His methods for bringing about a spiritual awakening are twofold - either prayer or crossbow (if one doesn't work, the other always does). While on his modern day crusade "Father" Reynolds must fight his own obsessive compulsive demons as well as a checkered past, a slew of uncontrollable Disciples and a tendency to relate the Old Testament to Survivor. Will Steve be able to save the sinners from their sins with a little divine intervention... <br />only God knows. (Less)
