The titans of Brooklyn metaldom: BIOHAZARD! Kasrvnotebook: Biohazard was a band originally based out of Brooklyn, New York. They are acknowledged as one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and heavy metal with elements of hip hop music. The band formed in 1987 in Brooklyn. The original lineup consisted of bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Anthony Meo. Guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei joined the band soon after. Their first demo tape, released in 1988, caused a stir with journalists who felt that the band's lyrics displayed certain fascist and white supremacist views, despite the fact that Seinfeld himself was Jewish. Accusations of racism in their music were strenuously denied by the band, but in later interviews, Seinfeld and Graziadei explained that it had all been a publicity stunt to win over the band Carnivore and their fans. Eventually, the songs in question were no longer played or even mentioned, and the band began preaching message of tolerance and anti-racism. After the release of their demo, Anthony Meo left the band and drummer Danny Schuler stepped in to replace him. A second demo tape followed in 1989. While never really considering themselves a hardcore band, Biohazard often found themselves sharing stages with bands associated with the New York hardcore scene, such as the Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front. They also shared stages with New Jersey hardcore band Mucky Pup quite often and a friendship between the two bands developed. Mucky Pup became a strong supporter of Biohazard and often booked them as an opening act, but many of the clubs would refuse to let Biohazard play, thinking the shows would lead to violence. As a result, Mucky Pup would resort to sneaking them on stage to perform a few songs before their own set. State of the World Address, this album was produced by Ed Stasium in Los Angeles and contained the single "How It Is" featuring Sen-Dog from Cypress Hill, for which a video was also shot. During their 1994 tour, the band made an appearance on the second stage at the Monsters of Rock festival held at Castle Donington. State of the World Address went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies, and Rolling Stone magazine selected the Biohazard logo as the best logo of the year. This was the last Biohazard album with Bobby Hambel, who left due to differences with the rest of the band. Hambel spent time in White Devil, also featuring members of the Cro-Mags, before seemingly leaving the music business entirely. The band recorded their fourth studio album, Mata Leao, as a three piece in 1995. It was produced with the help of Dave Jerden. For the 1996 Mata Leao Tour, the band hired former Helmet guitarist Rob Echeverria. Also in 1996, Biohazard played on the Ozzfest mainstage alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Danzig, Fear Factory, and Sepultura. While touring Europe in support of the Mata Leao album, the band recorded their Hamburg, Germany, show for their first live album, No Holds Barred (Live in Europe), which was released in 1997 through their former label, Roadrunner Records. for more info: http://www.biohazard.com "Don't expect a lot from this show." Profile concludes on Ep39pt6. Kasrvnotebook: With Roadrunner distributing Schizophrenia worldwide, Sepultura reached new audiences of metal fans. This was cemented by 1989's Beneath the Remains, which is hailed as one of the best thrash albums of the late 1980s. It was followed by a long European and American tour. Their first US show was October 31, 1989 at the Ritz in New York City, opening for King Diamond. By the time they released 1991's Arise, Sepultura were located in Phoenix, Arizona and had become one of the most critically-praised metal bands of the time, in spite of a lack of mainstream success. This was changed by Chaos A.D. (1993), which saw a departure from the traditional thrash style, now mixing it with groove metal elements. The album helped form the groove metal genre and saw Sepultura achieve recognition beyond the thrash metal community. They continued with this on 1996's Roots, in which the band further innovated by experimenting with elements from the music of Brazil's indigenous peoples and traditional thrash, with a slower, downtuned metal sound. The title track is probably the band's best-known song, and often a staple at live shows. In parallel, in 1994, Max and Igor, aided by Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel, recorded a more industrial LP, Point Blank, under the name Nailbomb. Nailbomb played a full set live only once, mostly the same tracks as on the album, and the performance was released as Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide. Nailbomb also played selected tracks live on Sepultura's 1994 tour with guests Fudge Tunnel. We went out to Minneapolis for a week and jammed with him for a while, and then he came down here for a week, but we just weren't on the same page... The Chaussee experience taught us to never try to recruit someone who has already been there. He was a really cool guy, but he's opened up for Metallica and been on the Metallica tour. After unsuccessful audition in Killswitch, Mark joined Stereomud in the summer of 2000, but it also has not brought any results. Mark Chaussee's style of play featured an original and exotic heavy sound, similar to an "old-school" heavy metal -- crude and unpolished, contrasting the glam-rock influences of former guitarist John 5 and the former style of band as a whole. Mark lent a more rigid, gloomy and aggressive sound to the band. "I thought Mark added something great and different to the tour. We haven't had the opportunity to write songs together" -- Marilyn Manson, Dramatic New Scenes for Celebritarian Needs. However, because of Chaussee's manner (and fan's disappointment with the departure of John 5), obscurity, inexpressive appearance and passive behaviour on stage -- he was not received well by fans of the band.
