How to get video from your Sony DCR to your PC
----------------
You need firewire sockets on your PC as the transfer rate to capture video is too high for USB (without firewire you can only capture still images). If you have firewire, your sorted! All you need is the iLink DV (4pin) to Firewire (6pin) cable to attach the camcorder to your PC, once you do you can either capture the video with the free Windows Movie Maker software or the Sony software that comes with the camcorder.
Heres a link on Amazon to the cable you need, although there is plenty of manufacturers - you dont have to go for this belkin one!;

If you have quite a recent PC or laptop it may have an iLink DV socket already, so no need for firewire - if so you can get this cable;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firewire-Cable-IEEE-1394-1-8M/dp/B000747OIK/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1195495725&sr=8-3

One thing in particular that i love about this unit is how it feels in your hand. Unlike many other digital cameras, you can easily capture challenging action shots with one hand because of its SLR-like design.
This camera packs an all glass 12x Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon Optical Zoom Lens which also features its best-in-class click-to-capture speed of 0.23 seconds. With this, you can capture those challenging action shots without delay.
All-in-all, It is easy to use, i got to know how to work all its features within an hour. I was amazed to find out how clear the photos come out when taken at 10MP. This in some ways is both a pro as well as a con because well, you see every imperfection in someones face when taking a close-up.
This camera offers a nice variety of shooting modes, some require a little bit of reading to know what the settings effect. The Z1012 offers the following shooting modes:
Image and video hosting by gos
Smart Capture: This mode is For general picture taking, It offers excellent image quality and ease of use. simply point-and-shoot and the best settings will be adjusted for you.
Sport: This mode sets the camera to optimize images for quick moving subjects.
High ISO: Increases the ISO for taking pictures in low-light.
Scene: Allows you to select from a range of different presets, including Portrait, fireworks, stage, backlight and many more.
Panorama: Assists you in taking multiple pictures that will later be stitched into a single wide-view image, something like a David Hockney photo.
Manual: This setting offers the highest level of creative control.
Shutter Priority: This mode Prevents blur when your subject is moving. The camera automatically sets the aperture for proper exposure.
Aperture Priority: This mode controls the range of sharpness.
Program: This mode offers the ease of auto shooting with full access to all menu options. The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture based on the scene lighting.
Video: High-Definition (1280 x 720) movie mode, High-Quality (640 x 480) movie mode and small size (320 x 240) movie modes with optical zoom available.
With this camera, you dont always have to shoot with the picture size being 10MP, you have the options of choosing the following:
SIZE ASPECT # OF PHOTOS ON 4GB
10.0MP 4:3 about 1250
08.9MP 3:2 about 1375
07.5MP 16:9 about 1600
05.0MP 4:3 about 2275
04.5MP 3:2 about 2500
03.8MP 16:9 about 2875
03.1MP 4:3 about 3325
02.8MP 3:2 about 3650
02.4MP 16:9 about 4200
It is also good to know that this camera can produce a max image size of 3672 x 2748 so for all you photoshop junkies out there, do you think that is high enough of a resolution for you?
Pros:
great image quality
12x zoom with close to no distortion
good battery life
great in-hand feel
can capture video in HD
Cons:
Slow Image Processing (5-8 seconds at 10MP)
Autofocus slips at very close range

How to edit m2ts to avi
Link: http://www.jakeludington.com/camcorder/20070118_how_to_edit_avchd_m2ts_files_from_sony_hdrsr1_camcorders.html
--- Video Details ---
Note: It's not the best video, maybe I will upload a different one later, this was the 2nd one taken on the camera...
Original file size was:
------------------------
2008.05.01_video_01_1080i.m2ts
85MB
Next I used the Panasonic included software to convert from (m2ts)to MPG
MPG file:
------------------------
2008.05.01_video_01_1080i.mpg
60MB
The MPG file playback was good in WMP (both Audio & video). Next I opened the MPG file in VirtualDub-mpeg2 & tried to export it as an encoded AVI file, but there was no audio track even though the MPG file played both a/v in WMP.
So I open the MPG in Adobe Audition v3.0, copied the audio track out as an MP3 file
Then re-opened MPG file in VirtualDub-mpeg2 and loaded the MP3 audio file & checked the sync with the video.. and it was good, so then I saved the AVI file (using divx pro 6.8.2 codec), as shown below...
VirtualDub-mpeg2 (output) to:
------------------------------
2008.05.01_video_01_1080i.avi
6.1MB
Divx PRo 6.8.2
Mpeg4/avi
720x480
--- Manufacturer Description ---
The new Pansonic HDC-SX5 camcorder employs cutting-edge imaging technology to capture video recordings that are breathtakingly clear and vibrant, especially when viewed on a high-quality, large screen TV.
The HDC-SX5 uses the AVCHD format to record full-HD video with 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution. It employs Panasonic's original 3CCD camera system, a professional broadcast feature, which renders vivid, true-to-life colors, outstanding detail and rich gradation. It also boast Panasonic's new Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), minimizing the effect of hand shake. This technology helps produce crisp, clear images, which is especially important for viewing on large-screen high-resolution TVs where image imperfections are easily visible.
The HDC-SX5 can record full-HD motion images onto both SDHC/SD memory cards and DVD discs. It can record up to 180 minutes of video on an 8GB SDHC memory card, and up to 60 minutes on a 3-inch DVD-R dual-layer disc. The combined media captures up to 240 minutes of full-HD recording. The SX5 can also copy recorded video from an SDHC/SD memory card to a 3-inch DVD disc internally with the touch of a single button, without connecting to a PC. Video can also be recorded on a DVD disc in standard-definition (MPEG2) format for playback on a DVD recorder/player.
