** Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. That title of the largest whitetail, ever, in the record books belongs to the "Missouri Monarch," a 333-7/8 buck found dead on the side of a road in 1982 near St. Louis. In second place is the legendary "Hole in the Horn," found dead in Ohio in 1940, however, many whitetail experts think that it is actually the largest set of whitetail deer antlers in history. It may be the most famous whitetail known.
The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 500 pounds http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:7cLce5HsdasJ:espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_deer_forecast05_MN.html+heaviest+whitetail&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare.
Deer have an amazing assortment of communicative signs. Approximately 100 different vocalizations have been recorded, such as tending grunts, dominant grunts, bleats, and many others. They make extensive use of sign language. The whitetail is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. It is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas. (Less)

Here not only is a wild species filmed with a domestic one, but the video shows some interaction between the two.
In addition, it shows some interesting and unique whitetail behavior, including high jumps and frolicing.
The video shows wild whitetail deer jumping over high fencing and then runing and frolicing. The awesome grace, power, and intelligence of the whitetail deer is demonstrated as they leap over a high wire fence clearing the barbed wire above it. Leaps over a 5 foot high fence are shown in slow and regular motion.
After the last deer jumped the fence, she stopped, turned her head, and looked back at the horses. Then she went up the hill a ways and turned her head again to look at the horses. She looked like she wondered why the horses didn't jump over their confining fence.
The horses were watching her (the same horses are shown in more detail at the beginning of the video). The brown horse, especially, appeared to want to run with the deer.
Also shows deer dance and frolic. Deer often do quite a bit of "dancing" in the spring. It may be a rite, somewhat like humans do with Maypole dances in the spring.

Other piebald deer were seen at different times in the same area. One was pure white, about a foot taller than the other deer, and had a huge rack. Another deer had a large band or belt of white fur around its middle like a Poland China hog. Its twin was white, but the only time I filmed the white twin was in a split second as it jumped behind a tree (it had been standing by the banded deer and their mother). A white fawn was seen once. Around 30 years ago, many area people saw a white deer with a black spot. A sixth white deer was seen and photographed along our river valley (Alum Creek, in Ohio).
Piebald, albino, "white," and "black" whitetail deer are very rare. In Bolder Junction, Wis., a man once photographed 3 albino deer standing together. The odds of doing this in wild deer have been calculated as astronomical -- 1 in 79 billion. Such calculations are based on assumptions. However seeing either a wild piebald or an albino deer is considered a once in a lifetime experience.
Black or Melanistic whitetails are very, very rare, and much rarer than either white piebald or albino deer. A person can recognize a melanistic deer because they produce too much of the pigment known as melanin and this makes them much darker than a typical whitetail. Of the millions of deer taken each year only a very few with melanism have been reported. Most people don't know they even exist because of their extreme rarity. A melonistic buck is a true trophy. Some melanistic whitetails are very dark and some are even pure black. Only 1 has, so far, been photographed here as shown below:

White deer and white buffalo figure prominently in the legends of people throughout the world. Sometimes these animals are considered ghosts and at other times presage an omen. The Chickasaw, Seneca, Apache, Aztec, Cheyenne, Lenca, Cherokee, Pawnee, Sioux, Shasta, Algonquin, Pawnee, Sioux, Lakota and many other groups have legends about white deer. Such animals are so strange in appearance that they immediately capture interest and make people watch for them. (These were wild deer on our farm taped by Scott and extracted from longer films.)

Ohio is noted for its large deer. Shown are a few of the antler sheds collected just on a portion of one farm. Some are quite large with anomalous points with up to around 20 tines.
Also shown is a monster buck with at least 10-tine antlers. He demonstrates rutting behavior -chasing a doe and holding his head up in a lip curl. I was quite close to him when I made the recording, but he didn't pay too much attention to me. At the end of the tape, after he chased a doe, another large buck appeared.

Here a large 8-point buck demonstrates the classical behavior of buck deer during the rut. He is first seen jousting a little with a younger buck. Bucks normally fight only those around their own size. It is obvious by the submissive behavior of the young buck and the majestic stance of the larger buck, which is stronger.
The buck then inspects under a tree for odor, which tells him not only who has been around but also the mating state of female deer. He then gives a classic scrape. This normally begins with a buck pulling branches with his antlers and mouth. Thus, he leaves a general indication of his height and size. He then scrapes the ground with his hoofs, which lets deer know he has been there, probably passes by frequently, and if someone wants to meet him to call on him in this area. Female deer may leave scent markings in his scrapped area. Later he shows a classic lip curl posture with his head held high and upper lip curled upward.

Melanistic or black whitetails are very, very rare, and much rarer than either white piebald or albino deer, which are also extremely rare. They are the rarest of all. A person can recognize a melanistic deer because they produce too much of the pigment known as melanin and this makes them much darker than a typical whitetail. Some are even black. Of the millions of deer taken each year only a very few with melanism have been reported. Most people don't know they even exist because of their extreme rarity. A melonistic buck is a true trophy.
Some melanistic whitetails are very dark and some are even pure black. This one, as can be seen when he turns his head, has a brown face. He is not pure black. At the end is another buck deer taken several minutes later under the same lighting conditions showing the normal buff or brownish color of a whitetail deer.
I saw this whitetail this morning and immediately began filming (08.02.23). There had been an ice storm last night and it was very cold. I set my camera down to get a coat, but even though I was inside and some distance away, the deer appeared to hear me. The next time I looked it was gone. Two whitetail bucks came into view, shown at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isgEerx2Hi8.
One of these two was melanistic with a large black patch on its back. I don't know whether it was the same deer or not. The two deer that appeared afterward each had one antler. The first deer that was laying down appeared to have two antlers. Brothers sometimes stick together and, thus, two melanistic deer could be seen together. The odds would be astronomical that two melanistic deer would be seen together by coincidence. The two bucks showed mounting behavior in bucks. Both were unicorn bucks with only one antler.
I later found out that another person had seen a deer that was almost all black in this area. Because black deer are so rare, it is likely that it was the first one seen in this video.

Another deer (More) Yoda (Piebald) Deer with Strange Ears Other piebald deer were seen at different times in the same area. For example, the odds of finding an albino deer are often calculated as 1 in 30,000. Less than 1 % of whitetail deer are piebald. However seeing either a wild piebald or an albino deer is considered a once in a lifetime experience.
