He performed extensively in North America, South America, and the Caribbean, and composed over 100 works integrating a European Romantic style with musical traditions including his Haitian and Cuban heritage, the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish folk music, and sacred and popular songs of the US. "[Gottschalk's] second 'Caribbean' piece from Plazuela, [Puerto Rico,] Souvenir de Porto Rico (op. 31), bears the subtitle Marche des Gibaros, referring to the rustic peasants of the island. A Puerto Rican enthusiast, Emilio Pasarell, later claimed that the simple theme was derived not from folklore directly but from a symphony composed by his own ancestor, Manuel Pasarell y Mila de la Rosa. Whether or not this is the case, ... both Gottschalk's and Pasarell's themes derive from the Puerto Rican song 'Si me dan pasteles, les dénmelos calientes,' ['If you give me cakes, give them to me hot,'] a chant-like melody sung by strolling bands during the Puerto Rican Christmas season. "In form, Souvenir de Porto Rico resembles the ['March of the Pilgrims'] from [Hector] Berlioz's Harold in Italy (1834) in that it depicts the sound of itinerant musicians as it comes into earshot, rises to a peak, and then fades away. The marcha itself is in a minor key and darkly sinister, its eight-measure refrain relieved by a bridge of the same length in the major. Like Bamboula (c. 1846-1848) and El Cocoyé (1854), Souvenir de Porto Rico begins with a firm cadence in the bass, but unlike them, it also closes with a cadence. Syncopations based on the Afro-Caribbean tresillo and cinquillo rhythms ... lighten the ponderous theme, which builds to an extraordinary climax ..." - S. Frederick Starr (Less)
