As part of the British Invasion, his hit song You Turn Me On reached number 8 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in 1965. He has written several books on popular music, beginning with After the Ball, published by Penguin Books (Britain) and Simon & Schuster (USA) in 1972. He accompanies his singing by playing the ukulele and, through his records, concerts, and movie work, has helped to stimulate the current revival of interest in the instrument. His recreation of the music played aboard the RMS Titanic in the film of that name won a Grammy Award in 1998 for package design and a nomination for Ian's liner notes (Titanic: Music As Heard On The Fateful Voyage).--------------------Early Life Whitcombs father, Pat, worked for his fathers film company British Screen Classics in the 1920s, eventually co-starring in Mr. Nobody (released by Fox in 1929). His father was a schooled pianist and encouraged Ian to play. Ians younger brother, Robin, accompanied him on drums in their first bands, notably The Ragtime Suwanee Six (1960-62) whose manager was Denny Cordell, later to produce records by Procol Harum and Joe Cocker. Robin went on to play tambourine on Sonny & Chers hit "I Got You Babe" (1965). Growing up, Ians chief musical inspirations were Phil Harris, Johnnie Ray, Guy Mitchell, Elvis Presley, and George Formby. He was sent away to boarding school in 1949 (Newlands, Seaford, Sussex) at age 8 and there he soon formed a tissue paper-and-comb band to entertain staff and boys with current hits such as "Riders in the Sky."--------------------------Early Career At Bryanston, a public school in Dorset, England, Whitcomb started a skiffle group in 1957 and then a rock and roll band in 1959. In the early 1960s, while studying history at Trinity College, Dublin, he became a founding member of Dublins first rhythm and blues band, Bluesville. Their second record release, This Sporting Life, charted in America in 1965. Whitcombs next recording single, You Turn Me On reached Billboards number 8 spot in July 1965. During his summer vacation in 1965, Whitcomb went to America to appear on such television shows as Shindig, Hollywood A Go-Go, and American Bandstand. He played the Hollywood Bowl with the Beach Boys in 1965 and then toured with the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. N-Nervous! Whitcombs next release, was recorded in Hollywood and reached Billboards top 50. He returned to Dublin for his history finals and received a B.A degree. In 1966 he turned to early popular song: his version of a 1916 comedy number, Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go with Friday on Saturday Night? was a West Coast hit, reviving the ukulele before the emergence of Tiny Tim. After making four albums for Capitol and producing Mae West on an album called Great Balls of Fire for MGM in 1972, he returned to England where he began his writing career with After the Ball. He later wrote Tin Pan Alley, A Pictorial History (1919-1939) and a novel, Lotusland: A Story of Southern California. Returning to Hollywood, Whitcomb starred in and wrote L.A.My Home Town (BBC TV; 1976) and Tin Pan Alley (PBS; 1974). He also provided the music for a documentary film, Bugs Bunny: Superstar (UA), which was narrated by Orson Welles. For Play-Rite Music he cut 18 piano rolls that were included in an album, Pianomelt. His other albums reflected his research into the genres of ragtime, Tin Pan Alley, vaudeville, and music hall. These, beginning with Under the Ragtime Moon (1972), were released on several labels including Warner Bros., United Artists, and Decca. During that time he also wrote and produced singles for Warner Bros. country division, most notably Hands, a massage parlor story, and A Friend of a Friend of Mine. In the 1980s Whitcomb published Rock Odyssey: A Chronicle of the Sixties: Ian Whitcomb, a memoir of the 1960s and described by The New York Times as the best personal account of this period. He also published Ragtime America (Limelight Editions, 1988), followed by a memoir of life as a British expatriate living in Los Angeles, Resident Alien (Century, 1990). He produced a British documentary on black music, Legends of Rhythm and Blues (part of the series Repercussions, made by Third Eye Productions for Channel Four in 1984). During this time he also hosted a radio show in Los Angeles for what turned out to be 15 years, taking the program from KROQ to KCRW and finally to KPPC. His songs can he heard in the films Bloody Movie (1987), Cold Sassy Tree (1989), Encino Man (1992), Grass (1999), Stanleys Gig (2000), The Cats Meow (2001), After the Storm (2001), Last Call (2002), Sleep Easy, Hutch Rimes (2002), Lonesome Jim (2005), and Fido (2006).--------------------------Today Ian Whitcomb performs at music festivals throughout America. He continues to write, and he makes frequent guest appearances. Beginning November 7, 2007, Whitcomb can be heard on his Internet radio program Wednesday evenings from 10:00 p.m. until midnight (PST) at LuxuriaMusic.com. Ian Whitcomb lives in Southern California with his wife Regina and their dog, Rollo. (Less)

Leaving Woollahra Superior Public School at 14, Harold worked as a messenger-boy, then as a railway stores clerk. He sang with the Waverley Methodist Church choir as a boy soprano and later a baritone, but found 'football and cricket were the most absorbing affairs of my life': he played for Waverley Cricket Club (1906-15) and Rugby Union as wing three-quarter for Eastern Suburbs, representing New South Wales against New Zealand in August 1914. Of middle height, he had a sallow complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
Enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 24 July 1915, Williams sailed in the Argyllshire in May 1916 as a corporal in the 9th Field Ambulance; his vigorous ballads were popular at shipboard entertainments. After military training in England, he was promoted sergeant in August, went to France in November 1916 and saw action at Armentières. In January 1917 he was transferred at General Sir William Birdwood's request to the entertainment unit, 'Anzac Coves'. By contrivance, he rejoined the 9th Field Ambulance in March, saw action at Passchendaele and Messines, and was regimental quartermaster sergeant from December.
On leave in England in 1918, Williams sang at a private party at Sheffield; several musical luminaries insisted that he should begin lessons as soon as possible. In August he transferred to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, where he met Dorothy Mason, a staff nurse in the Australian Army Nursing Service. He began to study in London with Charles Phillips and strove to overcome his own lack of basic musical knowledge. Attached to A.I.F. Headquarters in London from April 1919, he married Dorothy in the St Marylebone parish church on 5 May and was demobilized in July.
Reassured that he had 'a fine natural voice', Williams entered numerous competitions. Although his début recital in December at the Wigmore Hall, London, was kindly received by the critics, he remained as secretary to the Stearn Electric Lamp Co. until 1920. After ridding himself of his Australian accent, he received a great deal of musicale, concert and oratorio work throughout England. That year he began a long association with the Columbia Gramophone Co. (also recording under such names as 'Geoffrey Spencer'). He sang in the 1924 stage première of Coleridge-Taylor's Song of Hiawatha in London under (Sir) Eugene Goossens and, with the exception of 1929, in all later performances until 1939.
A famous Elijah in Mendelssohn's oratorio, Williams appeared with most of the greatest conductors of his time, including Toscanini, Walter, Klemperer, Barbirolli, Boult and Beecham. When in England he sang in every season of Sir Henry Wood's Promenade Concerts in 1921-51. An acclaimed performer in The Dream of Gerontius, Williams often worked with Elgar. He sang at his memorial service in 1934, at the coronation of King George VI in 1937, and was one of sixteen soloists for whom Vaughan Williams wrote the Serenade to Music in 1938.
Apart from his vocal beauty and musicianship, Harold Williams was renowned for his breath control and for the clarity of his diction in English music. Although the concert hall was his natural milieu, he also performed such roles as Iago (Otello), Wolfram (Tannhäuser) and Tonio (Pagliacci) with the British National Opera Company until its demise in 1929, and for sixteen seasons sang such parts as Mephistopheles (Faust) and Boris (Boris Godunov) at Covent Garden. He belonged to the Savage Club, London, took a house at Selsey, Sussex, played village and club cricket, and reputedly never missed a Test match; his friends included Alan Kippax, Stan McCabe and Bill O'Reilly.
Having toured Australia in 1929 for J. & N. Tait, Williams was urged by the Australian Broadcasting Commission to return for the Beecham tour of 1940; he was an important touring soloist throughout World War II and also taught at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music. When the Argonauts session was established on A.B.C. radio in 1941, Williams was 'Orpheus' and sang requests as well as the programme's theme song. He left the session temporarily in 1946 to return to Britain for the inaugural Edinburgh Festival in 1947. (Less)

Oh me name is Paddy Leary,
From a spot called Tipperary,
The hearts of all the girls I'm adornin'
But before the break of Mornin',
Faith they'll be all forlornin'
For I'm off to Philadelphia in the Mornin'.
With me bundle on me shoulder,
Faith there's no man could be bolder.
I'm leaving dear old Ireland without warnin'.
For I lately took the notion,
For to cross the briny ocean,
And I start for Philadelphia in the Mornin.
There's a girl called Kate Malone,
Whom I hoped to call my own,
And to see my little cabin floor adornin.
But my heart is sad an weary,
How can she be Mrs. Leary?
If I start for Philadelphia in the mornin.
With me bundle on me shoulder,
Faith there's no man could be bolder.
I'm leaving dear old Ireland without warnin'.
For I lately took the notion,
For to cross the briny ocean,
And I start for Philadelphia in the Mornin.
When they told me I must leave the place,
I tried to keep a cheerful face.
For to show my heart's deep sorrow I was scornin,
But the tears will surely blind me,
For the friends I leave behind me,
When I start for Philadelphia in the mornin.
With me bundle on me shoulder,
And there's no man could be bolder,
As I leave this spot I was born in.
Yet someday I'll take the notion,
To come back across the ocean,
To my home in dear old Ireland, In the mornin. (Less)

This ensemble was among the first groups to record jazz. It made tests for Columbia in early 1918, and its first records to be issued--on the Emerson label--were recorded later that year. It was the second New Orleans ensemble to make jazz records, entering a studio only months after the Original Dixieland Jass Band made the first jazz record (Victor 18255) on February 26, 1917. Nuñez had played clarinet for the Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1916 in Chicago but had been replaced by Larry Shields. The LOUISIANA FIVE recorded for various companies, including Emerson, Columbia and Edison. The band's first EDISON session was on April 14, 1919, recording "Foot Warmer" and "B-Hap-E." The Louisiana Five orchestra was featured on the Keith and Orpheum circuits and at the Astor Hotel in New York City. Edison promotional literature in November 1919 stated that, "The word 'Jazz,' meaning 'to liven things up,' was first used on the Gold Coast of Africa." This recording is being played on an Edison Amberola 50 phonograph. (Less)

Her il belirlenen hedefler doğrultusunda hatimler okunarak toplamda 250.000 mevcuda ulaşılmış olacak. Telefonlarımız her gün 9:00 20:00 arası halkımızın hizmetinde olacak.

It is unclear exactly when the song was written, with some claiming that the song was performed as early as 1927. The first great presentation, however, was made in the Hollywood Revue of 1929 with Cliff Edwards and Brox Sisters performing.

Benjamin Albert Rolfe (1879 - 1956) was an American musician known as "The Boy Trumpet Wonder" who went on to be a bandleader, recording artist, radio personality and film producer. Born in Brasher, New York, Rolfe was the son of a music director. At a young age he played the piccolo and cornet in his father's band, touring the U.S. East Coast as well as Europe. After high school, he worked as a musical clown in a traveling circus until joining the Majestic Theater Orchestra in Utica, New York. His work led to a position at the Utica Conservatory of Music where he was head of the brass instrument department. However, drawn back to show business, in the early part of the 20th century, he worked in vaudeville, producing a revue and serving as bandleader. In 1915, B.A. Rolfe turned his talents to the fledgling motion picture business, establishing his own production company, Rolfe Photoplays Inc. Rolfe's productions were primarily made in and around Fort Lee, New Jersey and distributed through an agreement with Louis B. Mayer's Metro Pictures Corporation. Rolfe's company produced more than fifty silent films, several of which were collaborations with director/screenwriter Oscar A.C. Lund including the 1916 drama Dorian's Divorce starring Lionel Barrymore.
His film company's last production was the 1919 15-part mystery serial, The Master Mystery, starring Harry Houdini. Mounting financial difficulties resulted in Rolfe Photoplays Inc. going out of business and before 1920 he was making a living producing and directing films for Metro Pictures and other small independent production companies. Rolfe's last directorial effort was Miss 139 (1921), notable in that he managed to get a credible performance from star Diana Allen, dazzlingly beautiful former Ziegfeld Follies girl.
After leaving the film business, B.A. Rolfe quickly reestablished himself in the music business and by 1926 had assembled his own New York City dance orchestra to perform at a Broadway cabaret called the Palais D'Or. Soon billed as "B.A. Rolfe (Trumpet Virtuoso) and his Palais D'Or Orchestra," by 1928 he was performing on radio and recording as "B.A. Rolfe and his Lucky Strike Orchestra" for Edison Records.
His radio broadcasts ran until the late 1930s during which time he and his orchestra played music with the sponsorship of Believe It or Not! on NBC. Rolfe also narrated the shows, providing an on-air description of a Robert Ripley tale of wonder. With the onset of World War II, Rolfe organized an all-female orchestra to perform patriotic songs.
