This is probably the first filmed view (filmed 02.01.05) and the only video in existence of this behavior. Gorillas normally mate from behind. These are western lowland gorillas, which are listed as Critically Endangered. This is because of hunting by people, health threats from such forces as the Ebola virus, and habitat destruction. These gorillas in the Columbus, Ohio, zoo have already made history, through Colo, the first gorilla born in captivity. Few primates mate in a face-to-face manner, known as ventro-ventral copulation. Most species use a dorso-ventral position. Other than humans, the bonobo is the only primate known to use the ventro-ventral position. The females sometimes engage in the activity of pushing small sticks or pieces of hay through the metal screen. It appeared that the female wanted to begin this activity. It may be somewhat like the weaving that humans and some animals do. **The gorilla (gorilla gorilla) is the largest of all living primates. These African apes are divided into two species and 4 or 5 subspecies. Their DNA is 97-98% identical to that of humans and they are considered the next closest relative after the chimpanzee. Gorillas can be over 6 feet tall and weight over 500 lbs. They are highly intelligent. Some such as Koko have been taught a subset of sign language. They use tools for a number of purposes. Colo in the Columbus zoo is over 50-years old and the first gorilla born in captivity. ** Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. That title of the largest whitetail, ever, in the record books belongs to the "Missouri Monarch," a 333-7/8 buck found dead on the side of a road in 1982 near St. Louis. In second place is the legendary "Hole in the Horn," found dead in Ohio in 1940, however, many whitetail experts think that it is actually the largest set of whitetail deer antlers in history. It may be the most famous whitetail known.
The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 500 pounds http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:7cLce5HsdasJ:espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_deer_forecast05_MN.html+heaviest+whitetail&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare.
Deer have an amazing assortment of communicative signs. Approximately 100 different vocalizations have been recorded, such as tending grunts, dominant grunts, bleats, and many others. They make extensive use of sign language. The whitetail is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. It is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas. (Less) Channel: youtube

Description: Colo, the world's first gorilla born in captivity, is the first gorilla shown in this video. She was born in 1956 and is the second oldest known gorilla in the world. (The oldest is Jenny, in the (More) Colo, the world's first gorilla born in captivity, is the first gorilla shown in this video. She was born in 1956 and is the second oldest known gorilla in the world. (The oldest is Jenny, in the Dallas Zoo). Colo is noted for the heart-shaped brow ridge above her eyes (She is not the gorilla shown in the still picture for this video). (Mumba, a wild born silverback male 1865, is the one with his lower lip hung open.)
Colo has left many descendants including grandchildren Mac, Jumoke, Nik, & Cassie, and great grandmother of Jontu and Muchana.
Colo was born on December 22, 1956 at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. She is a Western lowland gorilla, who was born to Millie (also known as Christina) and Baron Macombo (Mac for short) who were captured by "Gorilla Bill" Said, of Bexley, Ohio, in the area of Africa then known as French Cameroon. Millie and Mac arrived in New York on December 22, 1950, during a snowstorm and had no planned destination!! Mr. Said, called a friend, Columbus Zoo Superintendent Earl Davis, who agreed to take the gorillas in the emergency.
Colo weighed just 3.75 lbs. and measured only 15 inches long, but she had a profound affect on world. Her birth allowed the Columbus Zoo to demonstrate that gorillas could have babies in captivity and also to contribute the information that Millie's gestation period was about 250 days-an important fact at a time when little was known about gorillas.
Colo is an amazing world record holder for many additional reasons. Colo gave birth to Emmy, the first second-generation gorilla born in captivity and became a grandmother when Cora, the first third-generation gorilla, was captive born. In addition, for ten years, Colo's grandsons, Mosuba and Macombo II, were the only gorilla twins born in the western hemisphere! Colo is also the great grandmother of Timu, the first surviving gorilla conceived by artificial insemination.
Because of Colo, the Columbus Zoo is recognized worldwide as a leader in gorilla breeding, care, habitat, and conservation. It also is one of the zoos that led the way in creating enclosures that simulate a gorilla's natural environment, allowing them to live more fulfilling lives and enlarging human understanding of their intelligence and gentle dispositions. At a time when gorilla populations in the wild are severely threatened, around 30 gorillas have been born at the Columbus Zoo.
Colo will probably have no more offspring, because she is on birth control. Some national study results have confirmed that some older gorilla females have gone through menopause, much as people do. These studies also suggest that gorillas experience perimenopause, a stage in human females during which reproductive cycles become more erratic as menopause approaches. However, to be on the safe side, she is on birth control.
Another Columbus Zoo gorilla discussed in this video is Sunshine, a huge male who once resided here and also left offspring. Sunshine, who weighs around 600 lbs. and stands at 6 feet 3 inches tall, is a giant.

She showed behavior that the photographer missed until watching the video. She showed a high-level ability to watch and then make the same motions. Orangutans are known to imitate to the point of neatly washing clothes and other activities.
The Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) consists of two species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia. They have orange/reddish hair and long arms. They are the most arboreal of the great apes and each night they fashion nests in which they sleep. They can grow to almost 6 feet tall and weigh over 260 lbs. Like other apes, they are remarkably intelligent. They use tools regularly. According to researcher, James Lee, orangutans are the world's most intelligent animals other than humans. They have great learning and problem solving ability. Some think they have greater problem solving abilities than chimpanzees. They demonstrate language capability, can play computer games, and have a complex culture.

The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 500 pounds http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:7cLce5HsdasJ:espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_deer_forecast05_MN.html+heaviest+whitetail&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us and the female up to 175 pounds.

Although it is difficult to see deer fighting or mating, it is much rarer to view a nursing doe. This is because the does hide their fawns as protection and are very careful about exposing them to predators. A better view of a doe nursing her fawns can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSLCrNmrziw One chief means that deer use to evade predation is that of remaining motionless. This is especially used by fawns. A doe protecting her fawns is said to be more dangerous than even a big buck in rut. Nearby was a rare piebald deer, having speckled ears, and two large bucks, which leapt across a clearing. **Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. His efforts to mount her and mate have so far been unsuccessful, as she has yet to become more comfortable around him. The dingo is an endangered type of wolf that has lived on the Australian mainland for thousands of years and evolved alongside prey species to establish efficient and well balanced ecosystems. It is the only animal capable of keeping Australian wildlife healthy by keeping prey and pest species in check. Unfortunately, like our Tasmanian tiger in our shameful past, he is being vilified and killed off by powerful rural and hunting lobbies that clasp an abundance of ignorance, cruelty and greed.
