From: http://gapersblog.typepad.com Jim Ellison: Ten Years Gone Jim_ellison_1 It was ten years ago today that Jim Ellison died. Just as I remember hearing Material Issue's music for the first time nearly twenty years ago, I remember exactly where I was when I got the news. Now it's not like Jim's passing was like the Kennedy assasination (wasn't alive then) or September 11th (slept through phone calls all day long until I finally got up at 2PM that day) but it was one of those moments when someone you know is suddenly gone and you're not sure how to feel. Since I was too young (and a bit relieved) to have experienced the ascendancy of Chicago bands Styx and Survivor from local bands to rock stars, this was the first band that I liked that went from that band who used to play at our high school rec center to a band with a major label deal whose videos I'd see on MTV. Material Issue presaged the Pumpkins, Liz Phair and Urge Overkill's rise to national prominence, they blazed the trail. Jim and I weren't friends, hardly even acquaintences really but I had interviewed Material_issue_pass_1the band once and had emceed a few of their shows over the years at venues big and small. I remember a Metro show I emceed for them in 1995 in which Jim took me aside and asked me if he could give me a few things to say. I'd rather say something the band wants me to say than just give a standard intro. The great thing about 'the Ish' was that unlike most bands who want little or nothing to do with an MC, they wanted the MC to literally bring them onstage. I'd do my bit and they would start their first song. So armed with Jim's intro: "Rock Over London, Rock Over Chicago, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World, MATERIAL ISSUE!!!" I left the stage, Jim winked at me and with pick in right hand, he slapped my hand as Mike Zelenko played the opening drum part to Going Through Your Purse to massive cheers. A great rock and roll moment, to be sure. And while some would call that intro a bit over the top, Jim truly believed he was the frontman of the best band ever, he was that cocky but in the best possible way. It wasn't until the wake and subsequent conversations with his friends and bandmates that a different Jim emerged. With some of his advance money from the Mercury Records deal, he bought a house in Roscoe Village. The house, I was told, had some rock and roll memoribilia but he also lined his mantel entirely with pictures of family: parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. In addition to his collection of vintage guitars, he was an avid collector of period Heywood/Wakefield Furniture. And while girls were often the subjects (and titles) of many of his songs, troubles with one girl in particular was supposedly what distressed him enough to take his own life. He was missed then as he is now. Now see if this gem (She's Goin' Through My Head) from 1987 doesn't give you chills like it still does for me after all these years. If you have any Material Issue in your collection, bring it with you in the car today and crank it up with the windows and/or top down. If you don't have any MI, download the tracks above (or the two below) and do it, that's the way Material Issue is meant to be heard. (Less) Channel: youtube

Hannah : I think she likes Joe..
Bekah : Oh no, she cannot take your man!
Hannah : More like my dream man, I'd be upset if he liked Grace though
Bekah : I know we need to keep her away!

In case (More) I decided to make this video because I wanted to let everyone, including the Jonas Brothers, know how much I love and support them. I'll always have their back through thick and thin. In case you're wondering why all of the pictures in this video are black and white, I'll tell you. Black and white pictures have some sort of..special meaning to me. I have no idea why, but I prefer them. Again, I can't really explain. I hope you enjoy the video, because I worked very hard on it. I hope the boys see it someday and know never to give up and keep rockin'!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let us take a look at 3 of the most amazing young men on this Earth.
On November 5th, 1987, this world was blessed with Paul Kevin Jonas II, also known as Kevin Jonas. He is more than the guy who plays guitar in the popular band, the Jonas Brothers. He is a sweet, kind-hearted soul who can win someone's heart with his dazzling smile and unique charm. You always see him having the time of his life rocking out on stage with his amazing guitar skills! And who can ignore his awesome style? He could teach some boys a thing or two about fashion! Even if you don't always see him singing solos, he is an equally important member of the band. Without Kevin, the Jonas Brothers would not even exist! After all, we can't have one without the other. And what about that S.O.S. dance? Crazy stuff! I, for one would certainly love being able to shake Kevin's hand and getting to know him as a person, not as the face you see on the cover of that magazine you saw at Target the other day.
On August 15th, 1989, this world was blessed with Joseph Adam Jonas, also known as Joe Jonas. Talk about a ladies man! His sense of humor always has me rolling on the ground with laughter. Can he get any better? Time will tell! With an amazing voice, a great knack for the tambourine, and a sweet, caring personality, nothing can top this goofy boy! He may be a klutz sometimes, but we love him. Where would this world be without Joe? I have no idea. But all I know is that I love this crazy dude, no matter what anyone says. I'll always have his back.
On September 16th, 1992, this world was blessed with Nicholas Jerry Jonas, also know as Nick Jonas. Where to begin? This curly-haired boy has inspired and encouraged many people, including me. I don't think he'll ever know just how much I appreciate what he has done. I definitely see a special glow inside of his eyes. A true musician at heart, Nick is an outstanding guitarist, drummer, pianist and songwriter. His smile shines brighter than any city lights I've ever seen, and he doesn't even have to do much to make my day. I admire him for staying strong through his journey, and for giving it his all, and for that, he is my hero. He holds the key to my heart and nothing will ever stop me from loving him.
Frankie, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas, Big Rob, John Taylor, Garbo, Jack Lawless, Ryan Liestman, Elvis, and the whole Jonas Clan. Thank you all so much for making me happy with everything you do. All of you are a big part of this happiness I feel in my heart, and I don't know how I will ever repay you for what you've done for me, and for every other fan out there. I pray for all of you every day, and you never fail to amaze me. Don't ever give up hope and know that a chamber of my heart is dedicated to you. Keep up the awesome work and may God bless you and be with you every minute. You deserve the very best and never forget that I love you.
It's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.
Lyrics:
1, 2,..1, 2, 3, 4.
Give me more lovin' than I've ever had
Make it all better when I'm feeling sad
Tell me that I'm special even when I know I'm not
Make me feel good when I hurt so bad
Barely gettin' mad. I'm so glad I found you
I love bein' around you. You make it easy.
It's easy as 1, 2 (1 2 3 4)
There's only one thing two do, three words four you
I love you (I love you)
There's only one way two say, those three words
and that's what I'll do
I love you (I love you)
Give me more lovin' from the very start
Piece me back together when I fall apart
Tell me things you never even tell your closest friends
Make me feel good when I hurt so bad
Best that I've had. I'm so glad I found you.
I love being around you. You make it easy
It's easy as 1, 2 (1 2 3 4)
There's only one thing two do, three words four you
I love you (I love you)
There's only one way two say, those three words
and that's what I'll do
I love you. I love you (I love you)
You make it easy, it's easy as 1, 2 (1 2 3 4)
There's only one thing two do, three words four you.
I love you (I love you)
There's only one way two say those three words,
that's what I'll do.
I love you (I love you)
I love you. I love you.
One two three four. I love you.
(I love you) I love you. (I love you)
