The main terminal is in the shape of a ring with an oasis at its centre and is configured to cope with a massive increase in visitor numbers during the Hajj, while the smaller Royal terminal echoes the form of the larger building.
Below is a statement from OMA:
NEW JEDDAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
For 33 days per year the new Jeddah Airport will host the influx of two million Muslims for the holy Hajj period in Mecca. No other airport in the world can claim such overwhelming specificity of its use. These programmatic requirements form the base for a new approach to both the organization of the airport and its architecture.
Predictability over indeterminacy
Airports come in two sizes: too big and too small. Fundamentally compromised by the necessity to accommodate unpredictable future expansions, airports are ultimately forced to gamble on their right size. In terms of its design the airport is condemned to a permanent open end.
With the Hajj as one of the main defining elements, the new Jeddah International Airport presents a unique situation: its expansion is a given in advance, occurring at a fixed moment for a fixed length of time. This relative predictability allows the design of the Jeddah airport to acquire a level of specificity unheard of in a regular airport: allowing the rehabilitation of the particular over the general, of centrality over linearity, and of character over blandness.
Arrival over departure
Airports are primarily places one leaves from. With the business trip and the vacation as the airports main, perhaps even only, use, the excitement of going away generally outweighs that of coming back.
This discrepancy is also expressed in the design of the airport, with departures generally located in a grandiose space on top (mostly under a billowing roof) and arrivals located in a flat utilitarian luggage-collect-space below, making the first acquaintance with a new destination often one of disappointment.
The unique condition and purpose of the new Jeddah International Airport presents us with a compelling reason to consider arriving with the same consideration as leaving. (Mecca you dont leave, to Mecca you go!)
Design Proposal.
The initial proposal resulted in six different schemes with an emblematic quality. The final design follows the organizing principal of the ring. Both the main terminal and Royal pavilion with their crescent-like shape enclose an internal oasis that can accommodate different forms of use. The layout of the airport is organized in such a way that Airport and Hajj become a single integrated whole without forcing the airport to double in size.
The design realizes departures and arrivals on the same level allowing both to benefit from the same spatial conditions. The realization of departure and arrival on a single level creates a large surface that equals that of the Hajj, allowing the Hajj to be accommodated on the same footprint as the airport itself. No longer realized as a separate section, the Hajj becomes the almost casual by-product of a particular airport design. The Hajj becomes the invisible twin that at fixed moments allows the airport to expand its size.

With all the attention (good and bad) being paid to the aggressive position taken by Cessna in bringing an LSA to market, it seemed that it was time to catch up with Cirrus Design's LSA program... starting with an overview of the original announcement at Oshkosh 2007 and updated (previously, in Part Two, and now in Part Three) with the latest info as of the 2008 Sebring Sport Aviation Expo, recently concluded in central Florida.
The Cirrus Design SRS is based on the European Fk Polaris, which was lighter, faster, and not in alignment with the FAA's LSA specs - prior to its "Cirrus-ization." Once that process is complete, it will max out the LSA standards -- which will give the CD engineering team the unusual task of slowing down the lightning quick European version.
Manufacturer Fk Lightplanes has a 17-year history in light plane manufacturing. With operations in Poland, the Klapmeiers foresee the manufacture of their plane remaining in Poland, with assembly in the US -- a model followed by other vendors of foreign-sourced planes.
For the past four years, Cirrus evaluated two-seat planes from European manufacturers -- the center of development for this type of aircraft.
"The relationship we have developed with Fk Lightplanes allows us to rapidly offer cost efficient, sporty, entry-level aircraft for sport and recreation enthusiasts and basic training," said Klapmeier. "And our worldwide service and support infrastructure will make the SRS even more appealing."
Cirrus has more than 170 Cirrus Authorized Service Centers worldwide; 142 domestic and 31 in 14 international countries.
The goal is to have the first planes off the production line in the next year. A composite construction low wing craft, the plane will include a Cirrus Airframe Parachute System sourced from BRS (the Fk14 already has this feature as standard) and will use a Rotax 912 engine -- allowing Cirrus to continue offering single-lever power control throughout its entire line (no mixture knob.) Preliminary specs also include electric flaps, removable wings, a large baggage compartment and one-piece cabin, a fuel tank system outside of the crumple zone, low stall speed, height of 6.9 feet, length of 18.7 feet, a wingspan of 29.8 feet, and interior width if 45 inches.
In terms of performance, it will have a fuel capacity of 18.6 gallons, a fuel burn of 3.8 gallons per hour, take 100 LL fuel, and have a useful load of a minimum of 400 pounds. One of the changes will include adding a step to the plane for easy access (and, Alan noted only somewhat jokingly, adding drag to help slow the plane down to LSA speeds), and moving from finger brakes to toe brakes, which American pilots see as more highly desirable.
Alan Klapmeier spoke about significant issues facing aviation, particularly bringing more pilots to the arena, and how the SRS and all LSAs -- including Cessna's newly-announced SkyCatcher entrant, are all very good for the industry in expanding the market.
"For years we have talked about how we, as an industry, needed to introduce more people to flying," said Alan. "We believe Cirrus has been quite successful at opening the doors of aviation through our current SR product line. The SRS is yet another example of how seriously we take this responsibility, providing a high customer value product that is easier to fly, more comfortable, loaded with safety features - all at an extremely affordable cost."
Added Dale, "We are better off in this market to have lots of very healthy companies with very good designs out there... We want to bring back fun to flying. We want to bring kids back to the airports (watching planes)."

An exhibition of bicycles handmade in Oregon debuted at the Portland Airport today.
The exhibit — which I brought you the details of back in February — is slated to run for six months and airport officials say an estimated 3.3 million passengers will pass by the 40-foot, glass display case.
Since the exhibit is located beyond security gates, only ticketed passengers can view it. I joined a video crew today that was working on a project for the Portland Development Commission (a partner in the exhibit) to gain access and snap some photos (my slideshow is below).
I was full of Oregon pride as I walked up to the display. Passersby peered into the glass, studying the placards that described each of the ten bikes in the exhibit. One guy was so excited by what he saw, he chased down the rest of his group, and dragged them back to show them what he'd found (they were amazed at the 16.75 pound hardwood bike by Renovo).
The photo didn't come out, but a nice statement about the exhibit was written in stickers on the glass. It said:
Combining engineering skills, precious metal craftsmanship, cutting edge design, and a passion for cycling, these Oregon bike builders create functional works of art that appeal to today's rider.
The ten examples shown here represent only a few of the builders working in Oregon, but they share a common goal of providing one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted machines with a unique ride.
Each bike had it's own placard that provided details on the builder, the type of bike, and interesting tidbits — like the material used, or the builder's inspiration.
The ten bikes on display were built by: Cielo Cycles (Portland), Vendetta Cycles (Corvallis), Keith Anderson Cycles (Grants Pass), Stites Design (Portland), Jeff Jones Custom Bicycles (Medford), Renovo Hardwood Bicycles (Portland), Dropout Bike Club (Portland), Ahearne Cycles (Portland), Vanilla Bicycles (Portland) and Bike Friday (Eugene).
It was also a welcome surprise to see such a diverse range of bikes represented, from a tall "freak bike" built by Mark Veno of the Dropout Bike Club to a cargo trike built by SE Portland resident Bill Stites.
The exhibit was installed with help from River City Bicycles and was made possible through a collaborative effort by the Port of Portland, the Portland Development Commission, the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and Sweetpea Bicycles.
If you don't plan to fly out of Concourse E at the Portland Airport in the next six months, my slideshow below will have to suffice for now. (The PDC should have their video footage available soon as well.) (Less) Channel: youtube
