According to the legend, two tribes who lived there fought a battle to the death. The spirits who lived in the place continue to fight the battle. I was inspired to play this in a local wood full of bluebells, which for two weeks of the year carpet the forest floor in a magical haze of blue. Close-up, the bell-like flowers also inspired the bell sounds in my arrangement. I like the way the bluebells are only temporary - just like hearing a piece of music. I thought it was a great place to record this tune and I hope you like it. My favourite shot is the very last one, with the harp standing in the middle distance amongst all the different colours of the woods. It really was like that! This was recorded in SD (but don't let that put you off watching it!) as a way of getting used to the camera before recording a DVD project for Gloucestershire on sharing best practice encouraging children to be musical. Before the shoot we created a preset for the Canon which we liked, and then shot this as a way of checking out all the location shooting issues before using it in a preschool environment. I love this camera and it works really well - thinking of getting a 35mm adaptor for it having seen Philip Bloom's inspiring work with various adaptors. As a musician and (in another life) sound recordist with the BBC for many, many years, I would say audio is fantastically important - both the acquisition and editing of it. Like everything it has to be so good as to be unnoticeable, or noticeable for the right reasons. While I'm not at that stage with the pictures, I do love the way it's possible to make my harp playing available to a wider audience, and that's made some amazing musical connections for me. Technical notes: Harp: Pilgrim gut-string harp Camera: Canon XHA1 (recorded in SD PAL WS) Sound: 2 x Neumann KM184 Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition Plugins: Magic Bullet Look Suite I discovered Sony Vegas after editing this - and wish I'd used it as Sony Vegas has better multicamera editing facilities than Premiere Pro, which limits you to four cameras at once. Sony Vegas allows you a much higher number (we had 11 complete or partial takes to choose from and you can sync them all up to get a rough-cut and then go back and adjust the edits afterwards). I ended up purchasing their whole collection — the $500 "BIG KAHUNA" bundle — for use on my video projects, and am presently part of the NewBlueFX team! Many videos you see from me involve NewBlueFX in some way, so if you've wondered, "Wow, how'd you do that, Torley?"… herein is your answer. :) Most plugins are a pain in the ass to use (designed for impractical geekage, not everyday usage) and aren't available for a variety of hosts. This was the problem I kept coming across with Vegas, until I came across the breadth and depth of NewBlueFX's collection. They're priced a lot better than a lot of what I've seen, and I can now say that through experience with conviction. Cartoonr is a free download which works in Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, etc. and as I show you in a little under 7 minutes in GLORIOUS HIGH-DEFINITION ABOVE!, it's a snap — or is that sketch? — to use. Once you have Cartoonr loaded, you can apply it in a couple seconds, then dial in settings shortly thereafter. It's rewarding to use on everything from digital camera clips (as I show) to higher-res (pro) material to video game and virtual world machinima. Should you desire more control, the newly-released Paint Effects includes Cartoonr Plus, which gives you "better line drawing and image shading". Paint Effects is the evolution of digitally-generated natural media effects, which've graduated from still canvases (like in Corel Painter and ArtRage) to motion pictures. If the old masters had been alive to see this… well, I reckon it would go somewhat like that scene in Bill & Ted featuring Beethoven on synth. DA BOTTOM LINE: no cheap tricks, no sad gimmicks — well, Cartoonr is rather purty — and what you see really is what you get. Like most of my previous (More) I co-designed this promo with a friend of mine from interstate for a series of church sermons based on the adventures, philosophies and teachings of the apostle Paul. Like most of my previous animations, it all started off so simply and easily. A close friend asked me how to use one of the tools in Photoshop in an attempt to create a basic flier which would aid the audience in visualizing the journeys of the very prominent NT biblical figure. I suggested that it might also be a good idea to create a short slideshow/video to get people's interest leading up to the event. So now, 2 weeks later - and here we are, with the slideshow complete. Mostly created in After Effects 7.0, Google Earth and Premiere CS3 (used Fraps to capture the google earth images). Audio track is by Harry Gregson-Williams, ('Su-Chow Prison' from the Spy Game soundtrack, 2003). I struggled with this piece a lot! not because it was conceptually difficult, (though there was a LOT of work, including the design of the '1' logo at the start), and not eeeven because the software was difficult - because, it wasn't - but because my 'new' computer is having...a little trouble with hardware. Serious trouble. Now I'm an avid adobe user (pardon the pun), and will say quite definitely that it was not the software that was at fault. I've found AE 7 and Premiere have been the most reliable programs by anyone ever, but for some reason, my system froze at least 8 times a day, wouldn't let me pre-render any Premiere previews, and would quite just quit the program I was using. no error - just quit. It wasn't the plugins, wasn't the ram, wasn't the OS. it wasn't a virus, bad install, scratched hdd - no idea, really - just broken! Despite all this, I loved every minute of making it, and I am extremely pleased with the result, and all this has taught me how to edit super quick, how to think laterally, to better my ability to process and problem solve, and to make kick-ass trailers.
