For many, he is only a poet who wrote about love, music, pleasure, wine and sensuality. For some, he is a rebel while for others he is a heretic. It, therefore, makes sense to talk about his life and times instead of discussing his poetry in isolation. Ghani Khan was born in January 1914, at Utmanzai village in District Charsadda. He was the eldest son of Bacha Khan who founded the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement and who rose to prominence because of his relentless, non-violent struggle against the British rule in the subcontinent. When Ghani was five, his mother died of influenza and his paternal grandmother took charge of his upbringing. But she died in 1923. Ghani Khan received his early education from a traditional religious teacher at an Utmanzai mosques. He was then sent to the National High School in Peshawar. After he had studied there for one year, his father set up Azad Islamic Madrassa in his hometown Utmanzai in 1921 and Ghani Khan was admitted to it. At the age of 14, he started composing poetry while he was still at school. But it was in December 1928 that his first poem appeared in Pakhtoon, a monthly journal launched by his father as the organ of the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement for the promotion of the Pashto language. In 1929, Bacha Khan sent him to London for higher education where he also came to learn about Christianity. Even in those years of adolescence, he was able to impress others with his body and bent of mind. While in London, he got involved in a love affair with an eminent film actress but Bacha Khan did not approve of it. Ghani Khan was told by his father to depart for the United States of America to study of sugar technology at the University of Southern Louisiana. But though Ghani Khan went to America his heart was in London. It was then that he wrote many verses on the liberalism of the western society. He also wrote about his emotional deprivation. He did Chemical Engineering from the US and on his return was appointed in a sugar mill in Uttar Pradesh province as chief chemist.Atrocities by the state, plight of the Pathans and death of his only son gave his poetry a philosophical colour which became a hallmark of his literary persona. Ghani Khan's first poetic collection was Da Penjery Chaghaar (Chirpings of the Cage) which he wrote from 1947 to 1954 while he was in jail. His other books include Palwashey (Beams of Light), Panoos (Chandelier), Latoon (Search) and Kulyat-e-Ghani (A collection of Ghani's poetry).Apart from Pashto, Ghani Khan also wrote in English. His first English book, The Pathans, was published in 1947. It is a description of history, culture, traditions and customs of Pakhtoons. It also depicts their feuds, enmities and their attitudes to life. "Pathan is not merely a race but in fact, a state of mind; there is a Pathan lying inside every man, who at times wakes up and overpowers him," he once wrote. He was very proud of his being a Pakhtoon and thanked God that he was born among Pakhtoons. Ranmalee is a young girl living in a remote village and her father is a traditional dancer. Ranmalee too joins him in training children for dancing. But Praveen's family objects to this. Unable to find a suitable land for the hotel they return to the town. On a later day Ranmalee, her father and her brother-in-law Sarath needed to meet Praveen's father who is an influential person. The purpose of the meeting is to get an official letter from him for an interview Ranmalee is to attend. But there ensues a clash between Sarath and the security officials at Praveen's father's house. Disheartened by what happened they return. During this time, Ranmalee meets Suresh, a photographer and through him she gets to know Sapumal Senadeera, who is involved in music and entertainment business. Realising Ranamalee talent for singing and dancing, Sapumal enrols her in his dancing troupe. Teaching Ranmalee the western style of dancing and singing, Sapumal makes her a popular dancer and singer. He even changes her name to "Maleesha". Meanwhile Praveen who still keeps his hopes in Ranmalee comes to know about her and tries to renew their affair. But Ranmalee turned Malisha down. The film was shot in and around Colombo, Kandy, Matale and Kothmale and camera was handled by Jayanath Gunawardena. Rohana Weerasinghe, Bathiya-Santhush, Iraj Weeraratne, Centigrade, Mahesh Dehipitiya and Nawaratne Gamage rendered a number of songs and Superstar singer Amila Perera enters as a playback singer. Having started as a comic strip writer attached to Lake House newspaper, Udayakantha Warnasuriya started his career with the one episodic miniplay 'Menik Ketayama' later directed teleserials 'Humalaya', 'Ekagei Kurullo'. Diya Suliya', 'Sagaraya Parada' and 'Senehase Geethaya'. Hailing from the beautifully backward peak (More) YSE aka Ant Plate is one half of Rhythm Plate along with Matt Rhythm, two friends who met at school through a mutual love of shoplifting and warm real ale. Hailing from the beautifully backward peak district town of Matlock, in Derbyshire, Ant and Matt began recording their efforts on a borrowed 8-track tape player down in the local bus station. Early attempts at pop stardom, however, were hampered by the duo's crippling tourette's syndrome. After conquering the bourgeoning village hall/pub scene in Matlock they set their sights on taking over the midlands through collaborations with Mantis (Derby), DiY and Winding Road (Nottingham) and Flat & Round (Manchester) - they find the transpeak bus service a particularly useful way of getting to gigs - and then eventually the world, by releasing material on labels "not from 'round 'ere" such as San Diego's Blue:m, San Francisco's Roam and Portland's Losofono (LSF). At present Plate sells deep house insurance. Should the need arise, however, he is willing to travel to DJing gigs with his much-sought-after collection of cassette singles at the ready. This is Ant's second solo release for Lost My Dog and shows that he is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the deep house scene. Make no mistakes; 'Bounce Back' is a massive release for us here at Lost My Dog, and a case in point for UK deep house. We've been sat on this release for several months like greedy schoolboys, and have road tested it with wide eyed glee at every opportunity. A few advance CDs we slipped out before Christmas did nothing to knock our enthusiasm - Derrick Carter, Phil Weeks and Jason Hodges all reported back with grins larger than the Cheshire cat. From the very first listen Bounce Back has instant appeal and if the garage style bass, bubbling synths and striking piano form the track's roots, it's the raw, almost coarse, vocal and spine tingling breakdowns which forge the track's distinctive identity - YSE knows how to make house music, and in our opinion house music doesn't get much better than this. Rounding off the A-side, 'Possible Word' is more akin to the tried and tested Rhythm Plate sound; warm and inviting in every way. The sultry spoken vocal and smooth pads coax the listener into uninhibited contentment while the groove does ALL the work. 2020 Vision prodigy Burnski is drafted in for remix duties on 'Bounce Back'. Hailing from Hartlepool, just down the road from LMD HQ in Middlesbrough, the future is bright for the lad who began his musical career bunking a science exam to go and buy some turntables. At only 21 he's already racked up releases on Infant, Trapez and Morris Audio, not to mention remixes and an album commission in the bag from Ralph Lawson's Leeds house institution. His '3rd Time Lucky Mix' combines gritty, crunchy drums with floating pads and filtered vocal snippets, while his 'Back To Deep Mix' is a subterranean affair; super deep bass and meticulous percussion reminiscent of Dano, Chus and Cebellos' iconic "Deep Architecture", released on 2020 Vision back in 2002. We just hope you enjoy this release as much as we do! (Less)
